Have you seen Utena? It might be a little more subtext-y than you're after but it's the only thing that really comes to mind that isn't a 'yuri show for yuri fans'. Apart from the third season of Sailor Moon, I guess.

You could tentatively try Sasameki Koto or Aoi Hana though. Both have anime series but the manga is better and complete.

If you liked Wandering Son, you should try Aoi Hana which is by the same writer, about a lesbian protagonist.

I notice that Makoto Shinkai's stuff wasn't mentioned for important animation.

Personally I think he's a guy who really needs to figure out how to tell more than one story, but Voices of a Distant Star is short and was animated solely by Shinkai himself on his computer. Of course that doesn't sound like a big deal now, but in 2002 it was rather groundbreaking.

Yeah, I'd say read the mangas of given series rather than watch them, Aoi Hana and Wandering Son in particular, I heard Wandering Son glosses over the core issues of the series in the anime which is pretty gross. The manga's so good by the end that I've bought the first four hardcover volumes off Amazon(with prime it's basically 60 bucks for the four, and they're crazy high quality books).

Also, Aoi Hana was dropped by the group scanning it because apparently some crap website that advertises straight up porn on its front page licensed it for digital distro but doesn't even have it listed on their site yet. With only the final chapter being left untranslated. :suicide:

Sasameki Koto has way too much fluff, like a third of it could be cut out, but it's pretty decent for a lesbian relationship. One of the main characters is openly gay and gets tormented and ridiculed for it a lot.

Octave is really good. The main character is a total mental mess because of being a failed idol during her school years, which haunts her to this day, the other main character is a quiet, cool musician(or so she seems~). Largely deals with the main characters crippling insecurities and paranoia, but is also really enjoyable, has characters who can't understand gays, etc. It's really good. Warning: has a bunch of sex. But everyone's an adult, so it's fine. Doesn't take place in school, which is always a plus!

In addition to the Wandering Son and Aoi Hana mangas, you might also like Love My Life which is about a woman who comes out to her father as a lesbian and is surprised as hell when he in turn comes out to her as gay.

And Honey and Honey which is an autobiographical story about the author and her girlfriend and their life together in Tokyo.

Ai Ren and Kana

I'm glad you guys liked my recommendation. :)
I really want the author to be more popular. He just has this wonderful style and tackles some tough topics. I really enjoy his work. It's somehow so much more...honest I guess, than the usual drek. I feel he can make something really great if he was given the chance.

Even kana has this. Sure it follows the "dude gets a girl only she's a ghost/werewolf/idol/vampire/etc..." premise, but it manages to feel so much more real and forthright than other manga .
I definitely agree about the sex. There's not as much of it in the latter chapters and the manga becomes better for it.

Ai Ren is excellent and goes without saying.

I'm kind of interested in Princess Mimmia, I haven't read it in a while, so I'll see if the story went anywhere yet.

If you enjoy stories about the supernatural and the afterlife, you should read Sky High (skip Karma though. It's a side story, and while not bad, I'm not a fan) and especially Hito Hitori Futari .
Both have graphic violence, so fair warning.

Nah, that's not what I liked Ai-Ren and Kana for, really. And afterlife stuff always feels just boring and forced to me. Thanks for the initial suggestions for that author though! I definitely agree that he's at least more honest about it than most. I.E. if you're in a relationship with someone you click with, you're probably gonna be doing it a whole lot, especially if you're young. That said, I tended to get the feeling that at least half the sex scenes seemed to be because of some kind of quota his editor made him do, or something, maybe due to the magazine it was published in?

Ai-Ren isn't perfect. The entire apocalypse subplot could probably have been straight-up dropped and seemed like it was only there to set up the twist at the end. That being said, when I read through it, by the end of it, I hadn't realized how attached I'd gotten to the protagonists. So even with the beginning openly telling you they are both going to die soon, by the end they're so content that it's almost been pushed to the background, so the last eight or so chapters was me just a blubbery mess through most of it, and the final chapter was kinda corny but honestly kinda necessary to make the entire thing not just a gigantic bummer. I am very happy the author didn't back down from the premise. He didn't cop-out.

In terms of a story affecting me, I would say Ai-Ren leads the pack in any media. I really haven't cried like that at any form of media, ever. I don't think I'll ever re-read Ai-Ren. That said, I am very glad I did, and I hope my recommendation got more than just one or two others to read it.

Well...I checked it out because of your recommendation but I wasn't really getting much out of it. Eventually I was just skimming chapters and finally just skipped to the end because I'd already skimmed through most of it. I feel like I gave it a decent shot (before I got bored and started skimming) but it wasn't clicking.

edit: Haha sorry my manga-reading wasn't acceptable; reading (non-skimmed) at least 8-10 chapters is more than a fair shot in my opinion to see if I like something, and I kept going mostly out of curiosity for the resolution of the end-of-the-world plotline. Just in case my taste wasn't offensive enough, I also barely finished My Conquest is the Sea of Stars and decided that was more than enough LOGH for me. :v:

I read some of Octave today and did enjoy it though, so thanks for that one!

Ok, I'm starting to exercise in the mornings before work, and I'd like a show that I can watch while doing so. Something that's not terribly complicated or funny, as not to be distracting, but still good.

A workout show? Quite an odd request. So it should be something simplistically entertaining, meaning its not too heavy, too funny or too complicated? Does it have to be hot-blooded to pump you up, or something more slice-of-life so it isn't to distracting?

Attack on Titan has pacing issues and will either have an anime-original ending or a cliffhanger. In addition, they've had a really troubled production -- some of the TV episodes have unfinished animation and off-model issues. However, the manga it's based on is great and sometimes that still manages to shine through.

Psycho-Pass is brilliant, it has one of the best protagonists I've seen in anime and a wicked sense of humor.

At this point I would suggest reading the Attack On Titan manga before watching the anime. It's still super satisfying seeing it put to animation, but there are definite problems with the anime's pacing and animation in plenty of spots, yes. The manga has terrible artwork for the regular humans but it makes the Titan's creepiness unparalleled. It's also far, far ahead of the anime, and the anime probably will finish the current arc it's on and then that'll be the end of it(until they no doubt greenlight another season in a year or two). Even then I don't know if a second season would catch up to the manga's current spot, so it's probably best to just start with that and then see them animated.

Devil Is A Part Timer is probably the first or second best show of the last season. No, that's not a joke. It really is one of my favorite comedy shows(not just anime) I've seen for how often it's made me genuinely laugh, and anime as a whole is pretty notoriously unfunny. But it's so self-aware in the best ways that aside from one or two anime-original episodes(it's based on a long-running LN series) every single episode is top-notch.

Watamote is shaping up to be a really good but cringeworthy show for some, a laugh riot for others. Konota from Lucky Star is :3: an otaku, just like you!!:3: while Tomoko from Watamote is :unsmigghh: an...otaku. Just...like...you. :unsmigghh:

edit: Attack on Titan doesn't have horrible pacing. There's a few episodes that fall victim to it but at the very least the first half dozen episodes or so ought to tell him whether he'll like it or not. I say watch it through episode 6 and that'll tell you all you need to know.

I will put it out there that I thought Mawaru Penguindrum had some serious issues and didn't know what the gently caress it was trying to do. Or it did but it only figured out after several episodes that were vastly different from how it started. The way it went wonky was almost the opposite from how stardiver went wonky (which is to say, that started strong and got weird, and MP had one concept and seemed to abandon it to go another way that was vastly different)

I liked pretty much everything else on that list though.

As far as the present/very-recent past, these are things I'm enjoying/enjoyed:

Watamote- Hilarious, but cringe worthy, but not for the usual creepiness. One of the best written shows I've seen in a while.

Eccentric Family- imagine various elements of Japanese folklore in a modern slice of life setting. Very well done show, competing with Watamote for best of the season.

Servant x Service- Thread title is an apt description.

The Devil is a Part Timer!- Took goons by storm last season. An unexpected hit from the studio that gave us Okabe Rintarou in animated form.

Among many others.

My personal favorites of the last few years:
Humanity Has Declined- An odd little comedy about a human "diplomat"'s adventures with creepy little fuckersfaries. Absolutely fantastic all around.

Chihayafuru- A simple, lighthearted sports drama that is done so well that it turned out to be one of the best shows of the last few years.

Fate/Zero- The Urobutcher (Psycho-Pass) takes on the Nasuverse, and it is beyond amazing. But beware the woman strangling.

Madoka Magica- The Urobutcher takes on magical girls with the help of SHAFT, and pure brilliance ensues. One of the best shows of the decade.

Steins;Gate- Self proclaimed mad scientist unintentionally invents a microwave time machine. And then it gets even more insane.

Nichijou- The president suplexes a deer. That's all you need to know.

Working!!- If you can get over the sort-of-but-not-really-pedo protagonist, you're in for one the best comedies of the last few years.

Baccano!- Honestly, I'm not even sure how to describe this one. Psychotic party of bloodshed featuring the largest cast of awesomely batshit insane characters ever? I guess that works.

Durarara!!- Baccano!'s Japanese little brother.

Time of EVE- Distilled artistic and literary brilliance. Think Ghost in the Shell in a coffee shop.

There's plenty more to recommend, but just take a look here (which has already been linked a few posts above, I know) and see what interests you.

I thought Psycho-Pass was great, but not one of Urobuchi's best, especially coming off of Fate/Zero and Madoka. The animation also poo poo itself a little for a bit in the middle, but overall a solid cyberpunk mystery/crime thriller which is getting a second season next year. Attack on Titan had issues half way into the first season while Wit Studios tried to get their act together, but the second season is doing really well so far. Overall I'd say a great show.

Oh poo poo, right, Eccentric Family is fantaaaaastic in a surreal, supernatural way. Basically real-world Japan but it still has tanukis and tengus and mystical magical poo poo all over the place.
