Random Stranger posted:That page is actually quoting Fantastic Four Annual #2 which Byrne used as his way of bringing Kirby's revised vision of Dr. Doom's scar into continuity. That wasn't the statement I was refuting though. A lot of comic fans think that Kirby's concept of Dr. Doom's face that he started talking about and drawing in conventions during the 70's was the "original" version (to quote Ein Bear) and that simply isn't true. A lot of characters take time to develop into what we know. Superman was originally raised in an orphanage and couldn't fly. Byrne has really gotten a stick up his rear about original versions of character being the "real" one. If possible I'd pick the one that was the better story. That face reminds me of... something, I have no idea what precisely. It's certainly not capturing whatever emotion it's meant to be, though.

At first, I took it as Joker having a semi-profound moment, the kind you only get when watching a mother animal tend to its young... but it's also a monkey holding a monkey holding a monkey, so it's funny and he's trying not to ruin it by laughing. In retrospect, that's probably not it. The Joker's face is built around the crazy grin so when he's NOT grinning, it's even more unnerving and inhuman.

There's another page that shows him taking that monkey in, apparently, and trying to feed it like a baby while zany poo poo happens around him. I assume the emotion is supposed to be some sort of profound emotional connection, but it comes across as some kind of insane

That scene is complete bullshit if the next page isn't a splash page of him just busting out laughing. If this is played up as serious it is a bigger OOC travesty than Doom crying at the world trade center.

Fried Chicken posted:This was addressed in the Waid run, the Authoritative Action arc. Most Latverians like Doom. He has all of their necessities taken care of - food, utilities, health care, etc. They are safe from all the civil wars and hostile neighbors without even needing a military because no one will mess with Doom. Reed compares the Doom-Latverian relationship to a human-pets one. Its basically utopian totalitarianism, a pocket kingdom where Doom runs everything and disappears and executes those who don't go along with it, but every need is met and the people like it. Oh, so it's Singapore.

If it's Joker's origin that page better be the exact moment he decided to kill people. That would be incredible.

He has his "bad day", he's trying to do right, even after everything, but everyone around him is freaked out over his appearance or treats him like a joke. To take his mind off of things, he goes to the zoo, has a moment of reflection watching the gorillas and he allows himself a little smile. It's going to be OK. Then the monkey gives him a dirty look and he looses his poo poo.
