Armin was yelling that his best friend (Eren) was killed earlier, which caused Lady Titan to freeze in surprise, which gave Reiner a chance to move in. This proves that Lady Titan is someone with relatively close knowledge of Armin, otherwise she'd have no idea who Armin's best friend was.

He cut off the lady Titan's finger before she crushed his head, which is where all the blood and steam came from. When he flies out of her hand, you can see her finger flying away from the stump.

My speculation as to the reasons behind the lady Titan's actions:

It's pretty clear by now that the lady Titan is Annie: she has Annie's eyes, hair, and nose, and she's good at CQC (i.e., Annie's special talent). Annie's stated goal is simple survival, and most everything she's done is pursuant to that. If the Survey Corps finds out the Titan's secrets, Annie will almost certainly be killed, so she wants to keep humanity in the dark about the Titans for as long as possible. That's why I believe she's the one who killed Sawney and Bean: she has both motive (killing Hanji's test subjects helps keep the Titans' secrets) and opportunity (she can kill other Titans without using any 3-D gear by changing into her Titan form). She knows that the Survey Corps will discover the Titans' secrets if they recover Zhingashina and excavate the basement, so she wants the 57th Expedition to fail. Eren is the key to the expedition's success, so her top priority is killing him. She's cool with killing the other people who attack her, because 1) fighting slows her down and 2) each death increases the chances of the mission's failure, but she's not going to go after people who don't attack her because that would be a waste of time. She specifically spared Armin because Armin said she was nice.

What I don't understand is why Reiner wants to kill Annie (you'd think they'd be on the same side, both being Titans and all) and how Armin knew that yelling about revenge would goad Reiner into attacking. However, it's important to understand that we still don't know the Titans' true nature, or what the Aberrant Titans' goals are. All I can do is hope that the writers will resolve these questions satisfactorily.

Also, Boyfriend speculates that Erwin is named for Erwin Rommel, the WWII German Field Marshal known both for his skill as a commander and for his honorable and compassionate nature. Rommel never committed war crimes, always ignoring orders to kill any civilians, Jews, or commandos he had captured. He was also involved in the 20 July conspiracy, which tried and failed to kill Hitler; Hitler forced Rommel to commit suicide because of this. The choice of name supports the notion that Erwin Smith is planning a coup against the repressive human government.

i dont see a future where there wont be a rebellion.

Gonna have to hop on the bandwagon with the people saying Annie is the girl titan. Between Armin ranting about how it must be a human-titan or whatever and the fact it looks a lot like her. Reiner getting squished then steamy after healing, and that picture of the Armored titan next to him someone posted above sort of confirms (in my head at least) he's one as well. Also, Reiner's reaction to Armin speculating seems weirdly calm compared to Jean's "WHAT?!" moment. At the time it didn't seem off, but in retrospect it seems kind of suspect.

The last thing that stands out is we know the woman titan attacked the area Reiner thought Eren was in first, which is sketchy as all hell if you ask me. Armin also notes she changed directions towards where Jean, Reiner and Armin decided Eren was most likely to be... AFTER Reiner attacks/gets close to her.

So yeah a lot of thoughts after this ep.

Maybe I skipped a post but nobody mentioned this other glaring fact:
Everyone was given incorrect information regarding Eren's position in the formation. In other words, Ervin already knew that there would be people inside the team's ranks trying to take Eren out. So not only is all this speculation on-point, but Ervin probably already knew.

But man, wow, this episode. Makes up for anything prior to it that could be considered "bad." I had to watch the strategy scene three times because I was just loving it too much. Then I turned up the music for the lady titan reveal because it just got so awesomely bassy. I feel like I need to watch this episode all over again w/o reading subs.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I figure Erwin's trying to start up a rebellion in order to knock out humanity's leaders and replace them with something more effective against the titans. To that end, he enlisted Annie and Reiner to both lead the titans and stir up chaos among the populace so he could use it as a pressure point to destabilize the government and get more people on his side. That small scene after Sawney and Bean were killed where he asks Eren who the real enemy is might've been an attempt to sway Eren over to Erwin's line of thinking, but maybe he realizes that Eren's loyalty to his friends and his squad wouldn't allow him to turn on them, and so he figures it's a better idea just to take Eren out.

If I'm right, then I reckon they'll try to justify it like so many real world revolutionaries--"Yes, we did horrible things but it was for the greater good."

That's going to be a really tough sell if / when Eren finds out Erwin was the brains behind the Titan attack that led to his mother getting eaten.

Still, though, that theory makes sense. If Annie, Reiner, and Erwin have been at this for a while, it's no surprise they're still in complete control of themselves as Titans, whereas Eren only is slightly able to control himself as one and he's just recently found out about his ability. It also makes me wonder what Eren's dad's involvement in all this is. He obviously has the brew that can make regular people Titans, but he only injected Eren after the fall of Wall Maria, and perhaps if he was working with Reiner and Erwin and saw they've gone too far, that made him implore Eren to get to the basement and find out how to stop his own creations. Mysteries, mysteries.

It seems episode 17 dropped a lot of hints. Hopefully we're not reading too much into it.

There is no way the female titan isn't Annie at this point, and tooooooo bad makes a great argument that Reiner is the armored titan. I had written off the steam from his head being residual Annie titan flesh, but because she decided to go the proper direction, there can be no one else but Reiner who could've told her that info. If neither of them are the titan I will be hella pissed.

It seems matching haircuts is a pretty good indicator of titanitis, given what connections we've made. To that end, the only two people who could be colossal titan are Pixis and Conny, both whom have bald heads. Colossal titan is probably not Conny, because he was present when the colossal titan attacked. That leaves Pixis, which is such a shock without proper corroboration.

It's difficult to really pin the final objective, other than some sort of rebellion the ED hints at. I want to say this whole titan thing was a kind of Weapon X program gone awry and that there's a lot more to the story we have yet to see.

Oh god please next week's episode needs to drop more hints :ohdear:

So I was just watching the episode on crunchyroll and the video stuttered for a moment, as it did I spotted something.

It stuttered at 21.45, just as Reiner is carrying Armin away, it's for half a second but it's there. Motherfucker.

...well, we have a smoking gun here!

Not only did they animate frames of smoke, but they even included a sound effect of whatever magic thing is evaporating off. That's it. Reiner is a titan. Why he was responsible for smashing Gate Inner Zhigashima is unknown to me. Why he's infiltrated the Recon corps is also unclear. Because if he simply wanted to kill everyone within the walls he could have engineered that a long time ago. Nothing could stop an armored titan if there was a surprise attack.

I really don't think Erwin is playing some kind of 5th dimensional chess here by instigating a titan attack on his company. His goals are (a) maintain the prestige of his power base: the recon corps, (b) get to Zhigashima, and (c) forment a revolution against the corrupt nobility. So Erwin does not have control of Kyoannijin. Annie, did, however, emerge from the direction of their right rear flank: the direction of Wall Rose.

You know who Annie joined, unlike the other top-10 recruits? The people who look poorly on Erwin's revolutionary sympathies. The military police. The people that I suspect of terminating Hanji's research titans. So I read this as a power play between the conservatives and the expansionists, the former know perfectly well what the titans are, so they would have been happy executing Eren without bothering to wring any research data from his body. And the former absolutely does not want the latter to find out the terrible secret of titanhood, so why not send their newest and most expendable recruit on a mission to gently caress over the latter?

So why not use this titan power to break out of the walls? Because they can barely control it. And overexploiting titan powers in some ancient world war III is probably responsible for the mess in the first. So all the leaders want is to live the high life deep within the walls, squeezing the peasants for surplus labour, as a bunch of photosynthetic idiot superzombies amble around aimlessly outside the walls. But then the colossal and armoured titans just had to go and rock the boat for whatever godforsaken reason, and some random bourgeois kid got injected with titan powers by a rogue scientist, so the secret's partly out and now the nobles are freaking the gently caress out as their plans of dying of a heart attack on a courtesan's lap have gone out the window.

Edit: Erwin absolutely knows he has enemies within the walls that want to sabotage his mission. Witness the misinformation about Eren's location, that's not to protect Eren from autonomous titans, but from people who know how to read papers.

I would reason that the difference in hair style is due to Eren's relative inexperience in titan transformation. The "Annie" titan and the "Reiner" titan likely have the experience to coalesce in a more desirable form as demonstrated by the more muscular and tougher armored exterior.

.Clash posted:

This was my initial line of thought as well, but there's no way Reiner could have come out of that as unscathed as he did. Everyone else who takes a little slap from a titan gets bloodied or injured. Armin, for instance, was knocked from his horse and was incapacitated. Yes, he's a lot weaker than the rest, but we've seen numerous other times where people get injured at impact just from the speed of their own gear. There's also some evaporation when he first breaks from her grasp as well that doesn't continue the entire time to the point where he picks up Armin. Could just be an animation choice though.

Reiner's whole encounter with the titan didn't sit right with me as I watched the first time and watching the clip again really leans toward or reveals the whole titan conspiracy. He removed his hood before engaging her and makes sure to swing into her line of sight. He was clearly crushed and shouldn't have the strength to move an inch let alone be alive enough to break free. Then he says the line about "look, she's running away scared" when she changed her course, which Armin notes is straight for Eren's position.
I think most of this was pointed out already, but the evidence is there.

This show just gets better and better.

I went back and rewatched some bits from the training episodes, and I'm sure that nobody really needs any more convincing, but there are a handful of observations to be made that are a bit interesting whether they actually mean anything or not.

-That half second silhouette of the female titan and a girl in the new OP look familiar enough.
-Reiner is the one that pushes Eren to fight Annie during hand-to-hand training, they have a few other highlights together.
-Annie has a clear dislike of the upper class. Not an uncommon thing in any hierarchy, but is there no less.
-While they're eating, when someone mentions the armored titan the scene cuts to Reiner.
-The trainer has some thoughts to himself speaking to Eren's father, which it's not unlikely that many people know Eren's father, but in the consideration of hairstyles and faces matching in titan form, he is bald and a potential candidate for being the colossal titan. His eye color doesn't match though.
-Among the top 10 grads, our titan and suspected titans make the top 5, which A big flaming stink earlier speculated that Bertholt kind of hung out with Annie and Reiner.
