Well, I finally got my arm broken for the first time ever yesterday :/ I was rolling with some guy and he ended up on top, isolated my arm and got a shoulderlock applied, and somehow it just snapped right away before he even put much pressure on. Didn't even get a chance to tap before it happened. Dude felt terrible but it really wasn't his fault, it was just one of those freak accidents.

http://i.imgur.com/fb162zM.jpg here is the xray

It hurt like hell but it's feeling better today now that I have a sling and pain meds. Really sucks, I was loving the class :/ hope I heal ok.

Hey man, best of luck. From what I hear, really, strict breaking of bone isnt so bad on recovery side. Its ligaments and other mobile parts that are the worst to deal with.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. Had some good news today when I went to an orthopedic. They took more xrays (forgot to get copies!) and the bones are aligned pretty well right now, so my arm should end up healing fine as long as it's taken care of properly. I'm now scheduled to have surgery on Monday to get a plate/screws put in.

Really thankful that I'm lucky enough to have some good insurance to help with this. Not sure when I'll be grappling again, but I'm not going to rush it. I'm gonna make sure my arm is 100% before I get back into it.

Here we got a bit of footage of Renzo rolling with Paulo Miyao. It's a no-gi session. I hadn't seen the Miyaos without the gi before. Perhaps they're looking to expand into no-gi because they're thinking about making a run at ADCC? Who knows. It's good stuff.

That was pretty much a pinnacle rear end whooping. And then he does the Azerbaijani national dance to rub it in after.

I expect him to be wrestling the gently caress out of featherweights in the B-Leagues in no time.

Interesting stuff at bjj this morning. I was rolling with this new guy (didn't get his back story) and he was like a real world rageface the whole time. I was watching him while we were grip fighting and whenever I'd disengage his face would contort in fury and then he'd half try to compose himself and end up coming in with this pokerface/crazy death stare combo, reminiscent of an angry Roy Dean.

It was kind of a weird experience. In most cases when I see that expression on a training partner's face I know they're about to hulk out (it warns me to get ready for an onslaught). But this guy didn't seem out of control at all, though he was trying to crank my elbows with all his might. I rushed a trachea crush as soon as I got the chance cause I was so worried he'd spaz out if I hung out on his back too long but that didn't really seem to phase him, he just kept looking furious at nothing in particular. I guess only time will tell if it's an unusual facial tick or something more sinister.

I've come to the conclusion that no matter what martial art I'm doing some people are just loving weird. If I get people though that are going too hard I usually say at the start of the roll, "just an easy one tonight, I've got a few injuries" and hope they relax. If they keep going hard doing douche bag stuff I start doing dirty poo poo like pinching skin when grabbing the gi, crushing thumbs when fighting off grips and making sure when they're hands are available I put a little bit of a wrist lock on.

It's extremely rare that I do that, but over the years I've found that people who want to roll like dicks are just dicks in general I don't mind a bit of extra contact and nastiness when you're both competing hard but there's a line when rolling I can't abide dipshits crossing. Our coach usually sees them being dicks and pairs them up with one of the two guys we consider "gate keepers" one of whom is a 110kg beast of a blue belt who gives them more punishment than they can handle.

Yeah, there's been some sparring sessions I've had that really weren't intelligent chute boxe style head gear, wraps, 16oz gloves, shin pads, mouth piece, cup and go proper speed and hard contact for 5 three minute rounds. I've also had some grappling sessions on a saturday that lead to me being asked what happened because of the bruises and marks I had on my face and neck. I enjoy that sort of stuff quite a bit, but I've got to work and want to continue being able to train so when it's the average Tuesday night class I don't really want someone grinding their elbow into my face when we're meant to be working mount escapes or for that matter cranking the poo poo out of my neck and joints when I tell someone I want to take it easy.

agree, I'm more in line with Kano's idea that you can hold down a normal job while training because no one is punching you in the neck.

All those guys teach normal friendly bjj to lower belts and generally roll nicely, they just have like the occasional beat'em up behind closed doors.

I love scout man. He breaks Judo down to the level I need to actually understand it, and it still is insanely conceptually daunting to even think about.

CivilDisobedience
Dec 27, 2008
Yeah I really like the BJJScout stuff. The single yellow line to represent vulnerable angles still kinda oversimplifies things since hips can rotate so many different ways, but it's good to get people thinking about all that. There is some mention in the vid of tricking opponents into bringing the weak angle to you so you don't have to chase it down, and I really like the Tokio Hirano Judo vids for demonstrating that- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_baE802C8io Check out the very first throw, how Hirano lifts his opponent, then pivots his hip up, down, left, and right (getting a step ahead of his opponent's defensive reaction in the process) before finally throwing the guy with uki goshi.

Also, I'm really interested in Hirano's 'radar hop' which is the little jump that he uses to help him feel his opponents' center of gravity. It may seem like a really bad idea to leave your feet, but he keeps his balance, and it really does make it a lot easier to sense and throw into a shifting weak angle. And if you do the same thing without leaving your feet and just let your center of gravity rise, you get good kuzushi without much danger of getting swept on landing. One of the tricks Vieira uses that wasn't mentioned in the video is the down-down-up kuzushi that he does while sliding which works on the same principle.
