Had a presentation of a new network scheduled with our federal manager today at 9:30. Despite knowing this, my boss (the network architect) told me to re-rack the entire network and apply cable management 30 minutes before the presentation. Oh, and of course it wasn't working properly afterward. You know, like one might expect to happen after moving a lot of hardware and recabling it. Except anybody else would've allotted another 30 minutes for troubleshooting. Oh yeah, and wouldn't have done all of this right before a presentation.

Can we talk about documentation for a sec? I document everything I do in Evernote or a git repository, depending on what I'm doing. Everyone else I work with is horrible at documenting anything. What do you document? How thoroughly do you document it? What are most people missing in recording changes that are being made?

We've had multiple new systems installed recently that other techs were involved in. There's no documentation whatsoever, so I know jack poo poo about them. Yet, people keep coming to me whenever there's an issue. As for how I document, we have a virtual server that we use for software/patch installs as well as documentation. I usually just put them in Word Docs since everyone here has either LibreOffice or MS Office.

If the documentation is client facing, I include screenshots for every step. I do the same thing when i write out internal how-to's for our clients as well. Our documentation portal is based on Drupal with a bunch of custom modules built for it. The guy that made and maintained it was fired so its hit and miss if people actually update it. What people miss most in documentation ive seen is context . There will be a documentation entry that will be called "mail server" and a username and password in it. No server name or link to external mail host. Ive also noticed that people will create entries for resolving a common problem and post a link to a forum post or some website instead of typing out the steps themselves. I sent a ticket in... As of our learning portal (LMS) system upgrade three weeks ago, if you access a particular login page for the portal using Internet Explorer--which is our enterprise default browser--and your password contains the letter V, the page deletes everything in the password field once you type V. Meaning you can't log in, essentially, because you picked a password containing the letter V that has worked fine until now. The vendor informed us at first that this was a "narrow" problem and I was complicating things by filing a P1 ticket. Next they told us that they had a patch for the problem--a patch which was supposed to have been applied three weeks ago. Though I don't go to the nth degree on what buttons to press - there's an assumption of "if you're working on the Windows stuff you know a bit of Windows Server and if you're working on Linux stuff you know poo poo like the difference between /dev/sda and /dev/sdb" (though I try to put in warnings) I rarely link one article to another and no one else contributes to it or looks at it, but hey, it's linked in with AD so it's instantly scalable if ever any of that does happen, and with the markup being plain text with a few symbols it's the most "open" and easy to port to other forms of documentation. Man I have barely had anything to do this week until today. I have two scanners loving up, several people suddenly being prompted to log into Outlook despite domain logins being fine, and two meetings. The first meeting of course is a meeting about the second meeting. And here I am trolling SA.

This happens constantly with my users and Microsoft has no solution. The only thing I've found is to nuke all the outlook.com stuff in credential manager which works for about a month before it starts happening again.

Our 100% O365 (non-domain) instance will require you to type in your credentials again on the second loading of Outlook 2013 but will remember them if you tick the box to do so. Why it does not remember them from initial setup who knows.

It's taken me months/years to get to this point due to <reasons> but I can finally say that as right now today, I've reconciled every single IT asset this company has ever owned into one place. I've got about 90 assets missing, of which about half I'm 99% sure were disposed of before I even worked here, with the other half being items my coworker deployed, slapped an asset tag on, and then never bothered to document/pass the info on to me. No one in my department or Finance or anywhere else, besides me, has ever seemed to think this was important. Told my current boss, the consultant, that I had spent about 100% of my free time this week to finish off this project, and he told me he thought it was important and was glad I was doing it. Feels good man.

Apparently our internal network is so bad that transferring files now brings down the network. One person was transferring files from one server to another and our connection goes down, I do the same thing an hour later and our connection goes down. Coincidence? I get a prompt (Outlook 2010) if I log on via VPN, and it always fails and loops. After the fifth fail it locks my account so it's obviously talking to AD. All other services work, I can happily RDP into the most critical of servers (untill outlook locks my account...) Workaround: Never ever start local outlook on the laptop when offsite. Log into the old citrix access gateway and start outlook 2007 from there.

One of my colleagues built some workflow last week for one of our clients in order to assign tickets in a round-robin fashion. Service Desk Express doesn't do this out-of-the-box, so we need to get a bit creative with things. He found an old project of mine I'd built for another client, and asked permission to use it. This turned a potential 5-day job into a 1-day job, and our client was happy to pay the much reduced rate on that. It just needed a bit of tweaking for the client's situation and environment. Until today: The client calls up panicking because the new workflow isn't flowing at all. I check with my colleague a few times to make sure that before he left the project, he'd tested it and it was working. "Oh yeah! But we only really checked against the sysadmin account. The client was supposed to do additional testing and get back to me." I call the client, who gives me a slightly different version of that story, but what the hell. I'm not my brother's keeper, right? I'll just make sure poo poo's doing what it's supposed to do so that we can get sign-off and bill them. Sysinternals' DebugView is the best way to troubleshoot workflow/automation issues in SDE. I ask the client to get it set up before we run a test ticket. We get everythig prepped, run our test, and then I sit back and watch the metadata flow. I know wht the problem is pretty much right away. In the second-to-last patch, BMC managed to screw some automation tasks up pretty drat well. If a value is null, it should drat well return NULL. Except BMC managed to get them to return as "NO_VALUE" instead. How that fuckup managed to pass QA before release I will never EVER know. In any case, there's a really easy hotfix for this. Unregister the old automation DLL, pop the new one in, and re-reg it. I get that done for the client, we test a bunch of scenarios, and everything works. They're happy, I get sign off. So now I need to have a quick talk with my co-worker. The bug would have been firmly in place last week when he was doing the setup. Just how much testing DID he do? I got asked to do some testing on our flagship app. The one I've managed to avoid working on the entire time I've been here. Once that's existed in some form for about 8 years now. Nothing complicated, here's a set of instructions I have to follow... that are written assuming a working knowledge of the system and various acronyms. I ended up failing pretty much every one. It turns out nobody ever bothered to test what happens if you start doing stuff on a fresh database with no records. Also told them off for having a "Date of Birth" field with a calendar control that defaults to today's date, on a system that only deals with adults. Bet they're going to regret asking me to do testing

We have some third party people that access our terminal servers and our imaging system. Both require separate non-linked logins, as one would expect. I just got a very angry email from one of these people because our system isn't set up to remember her credentials. I broke out the overly polite passive aggressive approach for this one.

You know the server that is still running classic asp apps that were written on notepad almost 10 years ago. We went from a 5 man team to being laid off or transferred out. I wrote up as much as I could in a Word documents but most of it is just URLs and server names.
