Muffinpox posted:Yea, boosters have enough vacuum for a few stops even if the vacuum generator goes kaput. However, in the case of total failure you're kinda boned since its not hydraulic or mechanical problem, the system is just designed for the brake booster to multiply the 50lbs pedal pressure you're providing up to 300lbs and now with that gone you need to supply that 300lbs pressure with just your legs to get the same braking force. Which would be fine for an emergency stop on the street, mind you, but when you're already driving at the limits of grip with working brakes, and then take them out of the equation, you're pretty boned no matter what.

What, take the booster out of the equation? No. If anything the brakes are better unboosted for finer control, just you get a leg workout. There's a lot of race cars that have no booster, the actual pressure required isnt outside the bounds of what the average racer can do for a good long time. On a road car that runs out of boost on a track, you are completely fine if you know what to do and recognise what's happened. If your booster fails on the road it's the same situation. The real issue is recognising what's happened and reacting to it.
