Keep in mind that MTV and Comedy Central are both owned by Viacom so it could be as much an internal thing as is a Daft Punk decision thing. Though it does seem that Daft Punk could have done Colbert and the VMAs if they wanted to not give a gently caress.

The VMAs have been so watered down and decreased so much in production over the years that it might as well be considered the music equivalent to the Kid's Choice Awards. Boring, uneventful, and nobody takes it seriously except it's target demographic which will grow up in a few years to also not care about it. Daft Punk is and probably always will be bigger than that poo poo.

They are the most predictable type of shows, you just gotta look at who the target audience and what came out at the time, whether it be the Grammy's or the VMA's. I think since music is probably one of the most subjective types of entertainment and art, the whole concept of an award show based around it, is kind of ridiculous.

I think the only real platform for music videos anymore is the internet, sites like YouTube and Vimeo and such. I don't think MTV plays any anymore, or if they do, they probably aren't any worth watching. Does Fuse even still play music videos? Nine Inch Nails just came out with a new music video directed by David Lynch recently, which I saw on YouTube the day it was released, and it didn't seem like something that you'd see anywhere on TV. I know Sigur Ros has been putting out music videos too, and that applies to them too. Even videos like the one for Lady Gaga's Telephone a few years ago...that was largely a YouTube success, right? I don't ever remember seeing it on TV. Then again, I tend to only watch one show on MTV nowadays (Catfish) and I never watch Fuse anymore either, so I guess I wouldn't know even if it had been aired on TV. While I agree the VMA's as an award show is purely bullshit and no one really cares about the actual awards, it does give an opportunity for some great performances that often get talked about. This year in particular Lady Gaga is generating a lot of buzz as this will be her first performance since going on a break. Daft Punk performing at the VMA's actually sounds kind of dumb, and I hope they dont do it. RAM doesn't strike me as something that needs to be played for a television audience, even some of the dancier tunes like Get Lucky and Lose yourself to dance.

Whatever the reality, talk show, VMAs, weird-rear end album, it's clear that for better or worse (depending who you ask I suppose) this is not the Daft Punk we used to know. On a personal level, I find it all just a bit annoying and once after RAM came out I was sad we'd probably have to wait another decade for a chance at an album I liked from DP, now I just kinda want them to go away until I don't remember any of this anymore.

I still think the RAM remix album (THE THING BY DAFT PUNK THAT IS THEM REMIXING THESE SONGS LIKE ALIVE) will be better than the original album. All this nonsense with Colbert and the VMAs makes me think they have lost their original concept which was to have no part of that kinda poo poo. Not necessarily something they can help at this point but still a bit sad. Sim Gretina put out a nice mix of Doin' It Right that is to my liking in my current state.
