Not necessarily--and yes, I'm embarrassed by the fact that I know this--but the timeline of the book itself happened in the past. IE, Harry Potter was born in '80 or '81, something like that? So the prologue at the end when everyone was an adult was set in the "current" time. The poster is still creepy as poo poo, though.

A quick Google says the books take place from 1991-1998, meaning about 30 would be more or less right for a character that's 16 in the last book.

What irritates me most is people who joined the military when they were 18, people who have never lived paycheck to paycheck or had to worry about losing their job or paying for their healthcare. They’ve been completely removed from the civilian world their entire adult lives and they can’t seem to fathom that bad things happen to good people because they get a paycheck every two weeks even if they’re a total fuckup.

Am I correct in thinking that when you're in the military housing, education and healthcare are all subsidised for you? Plus then you get your pay on top?

Military pay can be totally hosed up sometimes due to a number of bureaucratic issues, but generally, yes. As a single sailor I get a paycheck every two weeks, a barracks room, dental, and medical care. When I get promoted to E-5 I'll get a housing allowance that will give me enough for a modest apartment. When I get out of the Navy, I'll have G.I. benefits as well. It's not perfect by any means, but I'm better off right now than many of the people I graduated high school with.
