I'm actually in a big argument with Verizon at the moment. I don't want a credit, I don't want special treatment. I just wanted an apology for the way a rep treated me on the phone. She actually told me a rate increase was "purely so Verizon can profit off of you."

When AT&T throttles unlimited data, do they always send a text message? My (android) app downloads are crawling recently (slow as poo poo downloads and often failing altogether) and they never have before. Although maybe it's somehow Google related? My usage so far in this cycle is ~4.3GB.

Also while trying to see how much data I've used this cycle, I saw this when I clicked on details next to my data plan:

quote:

Data Plan for SmartPhones. Unlimited domestic data usage. Only available for upgrades. Requires customers to be on a "Gold List" Data Unlimited SmartPhone Plan prior to upgrade to 4G device.
 Is this the right plan for my Nexus 4? Also, what the hell is a "Gold List"

I'm currently in China and haven't paid for any international data plan or anything. I want to check to see what text messages and voicemails I've received but worried about the price. I know that its 20 cents to receive text messages internationally so is it as simple as just turning my phone off airplane mode and letting the messages come in? I have a Nexus 4 so I can turn off background data / data roaming. Would I be required to turn on the data roaming to receive my text messages? Also, if I do have voicemails, I wonder if it would cost money to check it internationally?

It coats money to check your voicemail. If you turn your phone on and receive a text message you are def charged for that. Data is only needed for picture messages and I would recommend leaving it off.

AT&T has an International number you can call if you need to add a lower rate to your plan (I think its in the OP).

Actually, receiving texts goes against your domestic plan. :) AT&T knows you can refuse a call, not use data, and not send texts. However there is nothing you can do when you receive a text. I know it sounds like I'm lying since they dont care about domestic texts received and will still charge you for that. To reassure you, here is a quote from MyCSP.

quote:

Text messages received by a customer while roaming internationally are rated as domestic messages, The received text messages are rated according to the customers domestic messaging package. If the customer does not have a domestic messaging package, domestic PPU rates apply.

Also that international care number, which is a free call no matter what part of the world you are in, is 1-916-843-4685.

Haven't personally seen anything on this but I would be LTE would be a much higher priority, so don't hold much hope.

On the plus side, they are basically doubling down on LTE and on the second tower rollout of LTE in my market at least.

Yeah, I'd say AT&T has done a fairly good job rolling out LTE in a timely fashion. They don't seem to have the massive head start Verizon has, but considering I switched to AT&T in April and that my market got LTE about two weeks after, I'd say they're doing quite a good job.

From what I have seen, AT&T likes to not necessarily build it first and fast, but build it so it is fast and right.

I just stumbled upon this thread by chance and couldn't help but notice the price plans in the US for phones are loving insane. Why is this?

In the UK, I pay £26 ($40 or so) monthly for an iPhone 4S, with unlimited data, texts, and 100 minutes, and there was no up front cost for my phone either.

How the gently caress do people in the US afford communication? :smith:

We also get a iPhone 5 for $200 instead of the $750 so that means that an extra $550/24 $23 per month is built into our prices.

Also the US is a very big sparsely populated country so it's very expensive to have good tower coverage. You can get decent plans for $50 months but you have to pay for your phone.

In genera it costs about $80 per month on average for a good plan (including the cost of a phone). Some people pay more (Up to $130 per month) because they want a premium carrier (AT&T or Verizon). It's much more expensive but given the coverage area that carriers have to cover I think it's fair.

We do have some discount options but we still end up paying something like $50 per month.

To be fair we have a similar plan on Tmobile that costs $30 per month but you have to provide your own phone. You could grab an unlocked iPhone 4S for $215 off Swappa and use them with TMo. $215 spread accross 24 months + $30 actually ends up cheaper then your $40 per month.

Question: I want an HTC One. I want to use my aunts upgrade on her account since she doesn't want a smartphone. If I do it online on Costco's website they are asking me to add a 3GB 4G account. But she isn't going to be using the phone, I am. She is just signing the contract. Also Costco has the 32GB for $119, but then you pay the tax on the full phone. With AT&T havginthe same phone for $199 is that the same deal too?

I know the OP has a breakdown about AT&T Next but everywhere else I look on the net it is being called a ripoff.
So am I correct?
HTC One full retail price is $650 I think, but if you sign a 2 year contract it is $199, plus the tax on the full price of the handset ($65 in California) so your total is $265. Your subsidy is $20 a month so $420 for a total of $620 not including tax
ATT Next price is $65(just the tax) +$27 a month for 12 months.
But you are already paying approximately $20 a month in subsidies for the full price of the handset no matter what, 2 year contract or month to month. So ($20 x 12 = $240) + ($27 x 12 = $324) = $564, the cost of an HTC One out the door minus tax
Plus you have to trade your phone in in a year to upgrade. So basically you paid full price for your phone but to get a new phone you trade it in.
If you decide not to trade it in it's 20 months x $20 = $400 and $27 x 20 = $540 for a total of $940. AT&T should be giving you a monthly discount of $20 a month because you are paying for your own phone but they don't.

And you are even more screwed if you decide to leave. You will owe the full price of the handset. If you sign a contract and cancel within a month you only will owe $350, + whatever you initially paid for the phone so $540 total, and you own it so you can sell it.

So I have a weird network issue.

A few days ago my HTC One decided to constantly drop signal. It now refuses to connect to anything aside from Edge and GPRS. I thought it might be due to some kind of network outage, but it is now day 4 and I am not so sure. What will happen is the phone will constantly switch between 'E' and 'G', and will often drop a signal completely for 5-10min when the data connection is used at all.

I used to have perfect reception and no issues connecting or using 4G lte.

What might be causing this? ATT network? Busted phone? Busted sim card?

Most network issues are sim card related. Get it switched and see what happens. If that doesn't work, go to your local Device Support Center or call warrenty.

I'll be eligible for upgrade next week, and what I'd like to do is the following:

Switch my iPhone 4s with my fiancee's iphone 4
Trade the 4 in for a HTC One using Next and the trade to pay for the taxes and such.

Both phones are in good condition, and she doesn't want the 4 anymore. Will they allow this? We'll be doing this at a corporate store, if that makes a difference.
