Thanks for the preview! I didn't know they ranked each fight and now I'm certainly going to pick this up one day. An FPS-take on DMC/Bayonetta sounds like it'd totally be my jam.

New shadow warrior looks awesome, i love gore and i've been waiting for something Soldier of fortune-ish for ages now.

The encounter rating system and general pace really does make seem to push it past Bulletstorm style score attacks, and into some weird brawler area like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, and Clover/Platinum titles (especially Platinum, with a score for each major battle).

It's way more interesting than I expected from a Shadow Warrior title.

edit: "character action game", that's the term Dominic used in his preview for flashy scoring based sort of titles. It looks like a first person character action game.

Yeah, that's the term that seems to have naturally attached itself to modern-style brawlers such as Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, etc. There's definitely a bit of that feel to how Shadow Warrior plays.

And yeah, no multiplayer. Good - it's a huge waste of development resources 95% of the time.

 I just assumed, which is usually pretty safe for multiplayer these days. In any case, when it came to the original shadow warrior I had a lot more fun playing coop than deathmatch. It's too bad that's not in this one, but oh well. In retrospect the biggest laugh I got out of the original was when I told my friend's mom that the reason I was calling their house so late was to see if he wanted to wangbang. I don't know if there will ever be another game which will recreate that, but this looks awesome enough to overcome my usual multiplayer-fps-only bias.

Just as a heads up: The Duke Nukem 64 TC for Duke Nukem 3D has been released.

http://duke64.duke4.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/duke64v0.9.1.zip

It's not 100% complete, but a vast majority of it is done. All of the maps have been ported straight from the N64 version. All of the N64 weapons are in too. A few tiny things still need to be added, but you won't really notice it unless you've played the original game a lot and are spergy.

Quick readme from the Duke4 thread it was posted in:

quote:

Installation

Unpack the content from the .zip file. A copy of DUKE3D.GRP (Atomic Edition version) in the same directory of Eduke32 executable is required. In Eduke32 setup screen, select “duke64” in the “Custom game content directory” option.

Recommended settings

I would recommend to have the Ambient Light Level at 0.38, because the visibility has been adjusted using the 8-bit Classic mode as reference, and it looks different in OpenGL.

To faithfully reproduce the console experience, choose the linear texture filter, and turn off switching weapons on pick-up.

Rendering mode

Only Polymost mode is supported.

8-bit Classic lacks what is necessary to reproduce Duke Nukem 64 look, thus I left it as a "raw" mode. Polymer doesn't support overlaying of the paralaxed sky — and because wall cstat bitfield 16384 has it's own function in Polymer, it is ultimately incompatible with the maps extracted from the ROM.

Known bugs

There are some bugs are I am aware of, most of them are related to Eduke32, which is beyond my power. In particular, the Grenade Launcher projectiles are dragged to the floor height in submersible sectors, which I believe is related to Eduke32 bug with sprites in water sectors.

Do TCs work at all with the Megaton Edition? I picked it up during the sale a week or so ago and have been enjoying it way more than a raw copy with eDuke32 and HRP. No stupid slowdown due to stupid Polymer.

A concept build has been released of Nakara, a sister mod to Samsara which adds classic boss monsters to the class list. It's intended for Last Man Standing multiplayer, but I guess if you wanted to destroy all pretense of balance you could slam around in solo or co-op...

7-Day FPS 2013 ended recently, and there's presumably a lot of cool stuff there - I honestly haven't been able to check yet. The only one I've played so far is Shambles, a goofy 2.5D zombie shooter done by Notch where you also have to take on other survivors to get supplies. It has silly-rear end digitized graphics!

Strangely reminds me of Last Rites in a number of ways, I wonder if thats where they got the concept from

Edit:

I was looking though my ancient CD collection and found an age old copy of the Mr.Pibb FPS promotional game from 1998, and I was just wondering if I should post it here or not

Just as a supplemental for this. If I could get some criticism or suggestions on this, please, that would be wonderful.
Everyone in the Z& thread is practically worshiping this, and while that's wonderful for my self-esteem it's an early concept build so I'm pretty sure there's gonna be stuff that's just plain poo poo and/or needs to be dramatically reworked. Nothing's perfect on the first go.

Please? :shobon:

Capture the opening of the portal that connects this earth of 3D to one earth of 4D or 5D. Going to the 5D.

A few months ago I was skeptical about Project MSX, but with the new[ish] beta, I just started playing through Back to Saturn X with it and got through the first set of levels (like the first 6 levels?) and it's excellent. MSX+BtSX is excellent, for anyone who hasn't tried the combo out yet.

"The world is a hellish place, and bad writing is destroying the quality of our suffering."
On both of my computers running at different resolutions and graphics settings, I have issues with the HUD being broken in Project MSX (v0.2a). The shield "hit" sprite doesn't cover the entire screen, and the console gets spammed with running in an incorrect resolution. Virtually every ratio and resolution on both computers has this issue. Anybody else having this problem?

Fans of John Carmack might want to have a look at what I did for 7hfps (7 hours, ran a week before 7dfps) - http://7dfps.com/?action=games&id=30

I can't say in good conscience that it's "old-school", but it does have (extremely wonky) rocket jumping.

Giant Bomb just played Shadow Warrior on their premium Friday stream. Once you get past the ridiculous number of cutscenes at the beginning it genuinely looks alright. You just have to come to terms with the fact that it isn't the same kind of gameplay throwback that the ROTT remake was.

I'm late to the party, but I'm really disappointed in being unable to backtrack, the disappearing bodies, and the dumb lolrandom humor in ROTT, but it's otherwise a solid shooter. (gently caress the NME.) At this point, I'm waiting until workshop comes out and someone makes retro models for Thi and Freely.

Funny story, I was trying to remember some old GBA game I played as a kid, like ten years ago, I only vaguely remember it being like Doom and assumed it was some old port.

Decided to go through my GBA collection and found it again.

Turns out it wasn't some early FPS, it just looked and played like a bad one. I used to actually LIKE this game.

That does remind me, Medal of Honor 1 was a really drat good shooter. And it's not because you could shoot Nazis in the balls and they'd react realistically to it, and it's not because you could literally play as a velociraptor, dog, and William Shakespeare in the multiplayer.

Hell yeah it was good and pretty much spawned an entire genre. It's a shame that Allied Assault forever changed the direction of the series and war shooters in general with its insane action because MoH originally reveled in the quieter moments. MoH: Underground is absolutely fantastic and a great example of this. I really want another game like that.

I remember in the late 90's EGM ran an ad for some video card that more or less said console gamers have never touched a boobie. The amount of nerd rage that poured into their office was truly biblical. They ended up running apology and had some guy from the video card manufacturer write an article explaining the ad. Good times.

I remember it being action-y, even the stealth portions required you slay every Nazi you came across for a better score. It wasn't constantly tossing enemies at you in the vein of COD, at least, but still.
