Anyone try Founders Rübæus? Is it comparable to the New Glarus fruit beers at all?

It's very sweet and easy to drink. I've never had any New Glarus, so I couldn't compare, but it's nothing super special. It's better than Cerise, though. I came across a 6 pack of Bell's Java Stout today, which is the first Bell's I've ever seen in KC outside of their year round portfolio. I'm really loving it. It tastes like a frappuccino almost, but with a little bit of stout peeking through. If they made it a tad bit thicker it could give FBS a serious run for its money.

Whoever recommended Terrapin's Recreation Ale, thanks. It reminds me a bit of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but a bit more crisp. I enjoy this a lot. I didn't enjoy the Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin I had earlier though, it tasted like candy corn.

A local bar advertised hopslam bottles over the weekend, I'm pretty sure this the latest I've ever seen a place actually try to sell bottles. It wasn't even a cash grab as they included them as part of a half off happy hour. I'll have to get them to start ordering more special orders from the distro as apparently they will get anything (this is PA so our system is extra f'ed).

I couldn't decide which Funkwerks to send you and as Doc J can attest they are all very good so I just went with the basic saison. The rest of their stuff is also really good, which is why when my friends and I did a crawl through Ft Collins breweries, Funkwerks was definitely the tipping point for me in terms of any remaining amount of sobriety. Also glad you liked St. Bretta, it's soooo gooood, my favorite regular offering in the whole state. I will drink it all day, any day. Also sorry the Hoppenberg UP didn't work out for you guys. I just had it last week at the brewery and thought it was pretty good; I've never had it out of the bottle so maybe it doesn't go well. It does have strong Belgian yeast notes, but maybe there are freshness issues or something else not working out with the bottles. I didn't even check the bottle when I bought it, whoops. Bad beer nerd me, always check freshness dates on IPAs!

Drank a lot of stuff over the past few days, here are some notables: Almanac 1 & 2: 1 was really good, very noticeable plum character, lightly tart, kind of a little sweet, not too complex. 2 was good but not as good, had a weird sort of earthy savory character, presumably the pumpkin. Prairie Bomb!: Nice coffee aroma but has that aged coffee beer green pepper earthy quality that I am not a fan of. Not very drinkable but pretty tasty for a few sips. Cisco Pedaler Blueberry: Really awesome, a nice blueberry aroma and a sort of berliner-like mild tartness on a more classic American wheat beer body. Definitely a pleasant surprise since I've disliked most other Cisco large format beers. Sour in the Rye w/ Kumquats: Completely flat. Terrible. Disgraceful, but apparently bottle variation on this one isn't very high and we just got extremely unlucky. TH Guillemot Nebula: Not nearly as good as base Guillemot, the whiskey character muddles the nose and then the back end is way more acetic than the original beer was. Still goodish but I loving LOVED Guillemot so this was disappointing.

That's interesting. I haven't heard of a flat bottle before nor have I encountered one yet. Extremely bad luck. If you still have access to the bottle you should email The Bruery. They're great about handling and tracking down quality issues. (See the latest Ebony and Oak issues.)

Goons, I'm heading to St. Louis in a couple days and am curious if anyone has suggestions on places I should hit up for beer. I'm already scheduled to go on a tour at Budweiser, otherwise there's only a couple breweries I recognize in town (Perennial, Schlafly) though I'm not sure if they're worth a visit.

International Tap House was my favorite watering hole. Liked Wine and Cheese place on Forsyth to shop, but they're also pretty popular so they could be cleaned out, and I also liked Randall's. For breweries, I've heard a ton of good things about 4 Hands. Lots more options have come up since I was last there: http://stlhops.com/st-louis-beer-guide/

The Bridge Tap House on Locust is awesome for being downtown. Basically a gastropub with a nice tap list and tasty food. Connected to a bookstore as well. A little expensive, but no worse than anything else downtown and a very nice decor that makes it easy to spend a few hours in there. Also Sauce on the Side is a calzone joint downtown that makes killer calzones with pretty good beer on hand. Not like a beer destination, but if you want a fantastic calzone and something good with which to wash it down, that's your place.

My girlfriend was just in St Louis. She said both Urban Chestnut and 4 Hands were great. She even brought me home an awesome stein from Urban Chestnut. It's now my favorite drinking vessel. And my birthday was yesterday so after an awesome dinner and a bottle of Tilquin Quetsche she handed me a piece of paper with a Fedex tracking number. A case of beer she picked out for me during her trip is currently en route from St Louis. She was a little disappointed that it didn't make it here for my birthday, but just knowing she went to that trouble is awesome. She knows me so well.

As already stated, Urban Chestnut and 4 Hands are a must. Square One isn't bad either. If you hit Schlafly, make sure you try the sticky toffee pudding cake; my wife and I had our rehearsal dinner at the Schlafly tap room and every guest left with diabetes mellitus type 2 due to the pudding cake. It'll be the best worst decision you ever make.

Well, while we're doing this, I may as well jump on the bandwagon. My mom will be in Indianapolis this weekend. I'm looking for some Three Floyds stuff and some Edmund Fitzgerald. Can anybody recommend a decent shop, preferably in the Castleton area? Also, any other stuff I should have her look for that Indy gets but KC doesn't? Does Weyerbacher distribute to Indy? Thanks, goons.

So last weekend I make out like a bandit getting my hand on a case of double IPA from a microbrewery here in Quebec. I follow this thread diligently and I wish we had a tenth of the brews you have in the US. It is so expensive to order anything here and the good local stuff is not that easy to find

The flavor was very dry and mildly tart with a strong lemon presence. I absolutely loved it! I think only the first batch was released in 750ml, this says batch 5. Remember I still have a Sour in the Rye and a Red Poppy to send you!

You should go to Schlafly for sure. There's a handful of breweries now in St. Louis, way more than when I lived there. I have heard good things about 4hands, decent things about Civil Life and Urban Chestnut. The Budweiser tour is pretty fun for what it is, you get to see the horses and ride this train around. There are some good beer bars in town too. There's a great place called Dressel's Pub on Euclid with about 20 craft taps IIRC, their burgers are pretty famous and so is the welsh rarebit. There used to be a decent old school place on the Loop that I can't remember the name of for the life of me... the sort of place the cool old drunk professors would get beers, but it looks like it's gone now. There is a place down there now called Three Kings that looks decent. And Cicero's on the Loop also apparently has about 50 taps now, so worth a look. Have fun, St. Louis is great. hallo spacedog fucked around with this message at 19:08 on Aug 28, 2013 |
