Wait, wasn't Battlecruiser 3000AD really terrible? Might have been the only way to get any ads in. It's pretty fascinating to go through old gaming magazines, just yesterday I looked at a PC Gamer March 2002. I remember reading it over and over again, I think because it was mine and not my dads. Flipping through it and seeing all the things was super weird. Them talking about Morrowind with excitement, people talking about how they haven't played any new games because Diablo 2 was taking all their time, complaining about the latest Everquest expansion requiring 512MB of RAM and only working on Windows 98, talking about how Clive Barker's Undying made them piss their pants and that's why it got an award, bitching about not hearing a thing about Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 that year, news about tournaments at CompUSA, Duke Nukem: Endangered Species being cancelled... Most of the ads are nothing terribly interesting (barring the Soldier of Fortune 2 ad that says you get a discount if you trade in any PC copy of the first game) but this issue was also their game of the year awards issue, which of note, gave Ghost Recon Game of the Year, Return to Castle Wolfenstein Best Multiplayer, Undying got Best Atmosphere, and Day of Defeat got Mod of the Year.

Undying is really severely underrated. I love the details they put into the game, like with the Invoke spell. Cast it on dead enemies and they'll resurrect and fight for you. Cast it on live enemies, and you see them struggling before shooting themselves in the head :stonk:

I miss the days when gaming was decidedly non-mainstream, a bit weird and horribly offensive at times.

Do a GIS for "Elexis", perfectly acceptable stuff back then. :nws: BTW.

SiN Episodes showed us that something like that simply doesn't fly anymore. It's probably for the better.

There were some other ads for Q3A that suckered me into buying the game, with stuff like "IMAGINE YOUR ENEMIES CAN PICK UP HEALTH TOO" and I was all :eyepop: and saving money for it.

I mean I eventually realized it was an awesome game so I'm glad I bought it, but before it came out I really had no idea that the 'Arena' in the title was going to be so literal.

I've been working my way thru Shadow Warrior (with the Classic Redux version). I went thru them backwards, starting with Twin Dragon and I'm now up to Code of Honor. This would probably be my favorite Build Engine game if it weren't for the overpowered explosives and annoying hitscan enemies. They made some of the levels kind of annoying, in particular "Airplane" in Wanton Destruction (because of the enemies who can shoot you thru those curtains leading to the passenger areas), and the Ripper Valley section of "Dark Woods of the Serpent." I think it took me 10 attempts to get through Ripper Valley because of all the Ninjas that light you up the moment you enter the area. I guess that's what I get for playing on "No Pain No Gain" difficulty.

When I'm done with Code of Honor, is there any other mods I should play besides the one in the OP?

I like Shadow Warror's unusual balance. The game is filled with tough enemies, but explosives are so plentiful that you could easily clear out a group of enemies before they did any damage. With some smart Grenade Launcher and Rocket Launcher usage, clearing out rooms is extremely simple but fun. For mini-bosses, a single Ripper Heart HoloWang can shred them faster than lobbing rockets at them. The dual Uzis and Riot Gun, weapons that looks really powerful at first glance, are only really useful for going through out small rooms where using explosives would kill you. It's not something you would see in modern games.

Duke3D is similar in that you have so many ridiculously powerful weapons that even mini Battlelords, the toughest non-boss enemy, are trivial with the right weapon. You could still die, but you really feel like a badass when you tear through most of a group of enemies with the RPG and Shrinker like it was nothing, then go into the next room and freeze every enemy and smash them with the mighty boot in record time.

You can choose difficulty along with a level using one of the launchers in the OP, like ZDL. Not sure if there's a way to do it from inside the game.

Weird, I've been IDCLEVing in PrBoom+ for a long time and it doesn't alter difficulty settings. Maybe try the changemap console command?

So I finally beat ROTT. The checkpoint system got sloppy and the level design got lazier and lazier toward the end, especially with the Boulder gauntlet at the second-to-last level. El Oscuro was an unfun bullet sponge who'd die as soon as the game was kind enough to drop a Firebomb, but at least his redesign wasn't so dumb. The platforming was dreary and did nothing but pad out the length.

I can't wait until the Steamwork drops, so that someone can try their hand at straight-up remakes of the original levels. And remove the dumb loving lel so randumb borderlands 2 lelele XD humor, the voice taunting you at the end of each stupid death got really loving annoying, and the references made no sense. Oh, and the prisoners made unfunny racial/rape jokes.

I kinda wish someone would make an FPS kinda like AEOD. Loads of redundant, insane weapons and enemies.

The most 'offensive' pc gaming ad i remember reading (when i was around 9 or so, thanks dad!) was an ad for the game Gender Wars which had a pile of semi-naked female corpses with a guy in front, smoking gun and all running with the caption that went something along the lines of 'How many women have you *sexual innuendo*'d today? Edgy gaming reviews in the 90s often just wrote things like 'her tits and c*nt* too. I remember Charlie Brooker's column in PC Zone pretty much being on the same level. Good times!

Yes, I discovered that, and that "Skill X" will let set the proper difficulty for the next time you use "IDCLEV XX". I should dig out my old Final Doom box. It can't be far.

In addition: Using "map MAPxx" (or "map ExMx" for Doom 1) in the console will change the map and pistol-start you, but at the same skill level the previous map was played on IIRC.

I'm more of a fan of Attack of the Genetics Bugs!, as far as lovely Pie in the Sky games go. The unintentionally hilarious text that's filled with typos and strange grammar, abstract art-like level design with gloomy music, hosed up Dark Forces and 80s action flick sound effects for enemies, and bizarre game over screen (featuring what appears to be a robot walking out of a stove while a green-skinned woman stares into your soul) all give the game a special charm.

Is the plutonia experiment as unfairly hard normally as it is with brutal doom? I played through the whole thing in gzdoom a few years ago but now I'm replaying it with brutal doom and there are just so many gently caress you traps and even gently caress you level starts. I thought unavoidable damage was a big no-no in game design but a lot of it is unavoidable without quicksaving and loading a bunch. So far the worst offender has been map20, the death domain, which starts you in a huge, open courtyard with no cover and multiple arachnotrons and chaingunners and a revenant who detect you the second you move. Even starting the level with 100 armour and health I got chewed up 5 times before I managed to make it into a sewer thing with about 15 health left. The rest of the level has been full of gently caress yous too, like a room full of chaingunners who come up on a lift when you enter the room, and a tiny platform with about 6 teleporting barons on it.

Unavoidable damage isn't always a no-no, distant hitscanners are often used to keep the player from sticking around in an area, and to pressure him into constantly being on the lookout for for stims and medikits. I don't know how Brutal Doom handles hitscanners, but my understanding is that they make them more dangerous, which is bad in Plutonia.

Don't play Plutonia, or Plutonia 2 with Brutal Doom, is what I'm saying. Both of them love having dangerous level starts that require the player to quickly try to find some sort of safety.

Brutal Doom does interesting things with hitscan enemies. It makes their general damage output higher, but they actually fire (very fast) projectiles now, so fast strafing will save you from most of the damage. It makes them scarier in tight corridors, but less threatening out in the open.

Generally speaking, BD raises the difficulty a notch or two. The Doom 2 expansions were way harder than the base game, so you might have to compensate for the double-stacked difficulty by playing on an easier setting.
