AHL, The Opera and The Specialists (I always liked more AHL) were a blast and I'd love to have a proper remake.

Yeah, $200 is absolutely ridiculous when you look at what Reaper miniatures normally cost, even for pewter.

Cast them in that fancy new Bones material and sell 'em for like $50, so I can paint 'em up all awesome-like.

Brutal Doom does interesting things with hitscan enemies. It makes their general damage output higher, but they actually fire (very fast) projectiles now, so fast strafing will save you from most of the damage. It makes them scarier in tight corridors, but less threatening out in the open.

Generally speaking, BD raises the difficulty a notch or two. The Doom 2 expansions were way harder than the base game, so you might have to compensate for the double-stacked difficulty by playing on an easier setting.

The funny thing is, with chaingunners in particular (which Plutonia has in excess), an individual pellet does very little damage in addition to not being hitscan. So, even if you do get caught by surprise by a commando or two, taking quick cover will actually leave you better off than it would in vanilla.

I thought TNT was better for a casual fun blast. Plutonia's just too full of unfun serious-Doom-player bits. And TNT has Into the Beast Belly.

Apart from TNT's still uncompleteable in most versions secret level, of course.

They released a patch for that bug. I'll see if it works since I'm playing through TNT right now, as a warm-up for Plutonia, which I never actually beat.

Yeah, you're almost never going to get a perfect mesh when you're stacking mods for any game, unless they've been at least partially designed with each other in mind. Project MSX and UAC Ultra, for instance, or Nazis! and Epic 2.

Brutal Doom is intended to bring vanilla Doom 1 & 2 up to more modern standards of difficulty, so it's going to make things tough if you're playing a level pack designed to make things super-hard already.

I find it astounding that three games in this fairly specific genre came out for GoldSrc, all of them were amazing, and aside from Stranglehold not a single modern shooter has really captured the same feeling. Max Payne 3's multiplayer was a really poor, stiff showing compared to how satisfying these games were to play.

Total shame that the final release of The Specialists was an imbalanced mess that broke Kung Fu, so even if you find a server with people on it most of the awesome features will be overshadowed by dudes running backwards at 300 mph and kicking you in the head for a one shot kill. There is actually a spiritual Source engine successor in the works called Double Action Boogaloo with one of the coders on The Specialists as the lead developers. It went up on Kickstarter but unfortunately it didn't gain much traction. I played a little bit in a test session and it was pretty fun, I'd recommend checking it out since I think they've made a lot of progress since I've last tried it.

I just miss Half-life multiplayer mods in general. The game had an atmosphere to it that not many other games captured. I miss Science and Industry, and even just Opposing force DM was pretty fun. I admit that I do like ranking up while playing Multiplayer, but one of the big problems I have with it is that it ends up feeling like the main reason to play rather than just sitting in the background even if it doesn't effect gameplay whatsoever. I played Science and Industry all day long because I wanted to, not because I wanted to level up.

I think it's probably because the lack of custom levels in new games now just makes the multiplayer a limited time thing...but that's the way modern development has gone for years now so poo poo happens.

I'm not complaining about brutal doom altering plutonia, I was just wondering if some of the stuff in plutonia was as gently caress-you in base doom as it seems in brutal doom. I like the double down of difficulty for the most part, it's just some sections of the game have made me save scum more than I'd like to.

Now all I need is brutal doom 64.

Are there any other doom megawads that work well with brutal doom, like alien vendetta or something?

Alien Vendetta can get pretty nuts, and it has aged quite a bit. I've found that it plays best with ones that show a modicum of restraint. UAC Ultra and Back to Saturn X being notable great ones. Community Chest 4 is pretty great too, although it might play best with the pistol/rifle start mutator that someone put together, because all of those maps are balanced for starting fresh.

Well if anyone is willing to set up a goon half-life 1 mod steam group I'd be down to idle in it and play some of these games with you guys since I already have most of them installed.

Personally I think The Specialists had the best variety and gameplay of the bullet time mods. I would totally be down for some S&I or Sven Co-op as well but I'm down to try any of them.

what exactly has AV aged in comparison to? it's not hyper-detailed like too many maps (well, mainly thinking of KDIZD here, though I know hyperdetail was a big point of contention in the Doom community a few years ago) in the past five-or-so years have been, but Doom map design hasn't exactly made massive strides since 2002. Maybe it's not as pretty as, say, BTSX or SoD, but it hardly gives the impression of being "aged", especially since most of the maps are some of the best-designed ever.

AV is still stellar, I don't know why anyone would say it hasn't aged well. It's still by far my favorite megawad, and has my single favorite level of all time in it (Map 26, Dark Dome).

Not that I'd recommend playing Brutal Doom with it, of course.

Yeah, AV Map20 is not very good at all, in fact, I kinda remember that most servers that ran it as a co-op wad had a version of the .wad that skipped Map20 entirely.

It's up there with Map28 in Scythe, and Map11 in Plutonia 2 as far as awful levels in good wads go.

Alien Vendetta owned and is one of the best megawads ever :colbert:. Misiri Halek was absolute pain, though.

Playing it with Brutal Doom is probably suicide even at the easiest difficulties. Levels like Dark Dome are designed pretty carefully with the enemies' vanilla AIs and firepower in mind. Chances are Brutal Doom will clash with it in unfun ways.

I'm having a lot of fun playing AV with Brutal Doom, except some levels just get really insane, particularly cyberdemon levels. I was doing rather well playing on UV and without mid-level saving until Map 14: Overwhelming Odds. Holy poo poo that map is hard with Brutal. I'm saving around every corner because I never know when I'll be surrounded by ridiculous mobs.

I think any mod that is pretty "loose" with its fight choreography will be fun. Any mod that relies on the specific damage and health values of vanilla doom will suck with Brutal. Also keep in mind that because of double damage, you usually end up with way more ammo than usual.

Edit: Yeah, Map 26 Dark Dome would be such a grind with Brutal. I think it's a mistake on Brutal's part that the BFG damages the player with splash damage. It renders many classic mods either impossible or very difficult. I've killed myself so many times with the BFG.

I really liked the bad FMV's for adding that zainyness that works so well in the star wars universe. :3: The falling ship level will forever be lasered into my brain as a brilliantly designed gimmick stage, and Kyle/Mara were great characters to stomp around with both in the original and xpac.
