It's a rubber nipple. This show just keeps being awesome - I really hope it's doing ok in Japan.

The breech calf scene was hard to watch. It brought back unpleasant teenage memories of helping deliver calves in the middle of the night. They underplayed how gross a calf is when it comes out but nailed the sound of the cow in distress.

The bit in this episode about eating the things we love made me think of The Eccentric Family and the dude who's all about eating the 'cutie patootie' Tanuki and the woman who wants to eat the main character.

I don't believe the anime or manga gets into having the students drink raw milk from the on-campus dairy, but I would think that'd be a good thing to include in the story. I know Hachiken (extremely minor manga spoiler) "sneaks" a drink of raw milk directly from the barn while working at Aki's place during the summer break and really likes it.

One guide says this: quote:Blow down the calf’s throat. Your breath contains about 4- 5% carbon dioxide, while normal air contains much less. Blowing carbon dioxide into the respiratory tract of the calf will act as a stimulant to initiate breathing. When performing this technique, your mouth should not touch the calf’s. quote:Mouth to nose or mouth to mouth resuscitation can be initiated however it is difficult to establish respiration because of air leakage and air often travels down the esophagus filling the abomasum further impeding the calf’s ability to breath. cooldude2.0 fucked around with this message at 16:32 on Aug 24, 2013 |

This show has been really great so far, and episode 7 has my only disappointment: Mikage's dad is not nearly as menacing as he is in the manga. Otherwise, stellar all around.

As a person from Illinois the corn we get from the stores are still pretty fresh and good despise the farms being located down state and living in Chicago. Now I never grilled corn and always had it boiled but I am going to try it grilled next time based on this thread and the show.

At this point I'm pretty sure Silver Spoon is my favorite show of the season trumping out Shingeki no Kyojin, and it might be my favorite show of the year. It's incarnate, with an interesting story and characters with depth and motivations that are consistent and diverse. At times funny, informative, gut-wrenching, and thought-provoking, it's just all around enjoyable to watch. Hachiken is a fish out of water so it gives the other characters an excuse to bring up information to the viewer (like how pigs fight for dominance initially, or differences in farming methods), and his character flaws are believable and avoid being overly cliche. Seeing him struggle with and attempt to overcome obstacles both internal and external makes it easy to invest yourself in him as a character, and that holds true for a lot of other characters like Komaba and Mikage too. Plus the ending theme song is absolutely amazingly chosen. How do you beat this for a farm anime? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZHK-Y6pa5Q Flawless.

Dessel posted:... I have to wonder though, do these kind of education institutions focusing on farming actually exist anywhere like this? Yep. There are now even adult education places that train in farming. But for the younger american generation, college is the best non-family bet for learning the agricultural trade. Probably the most visible is the sixth largest university in the US, the infamous Texas A&M. Go Aggies. lookit that dog I'm not a huge fan of the institution on whole, mostly for their conservatism, but you cant help but be impressed with their facilities. They also have an Air Force. On the 'less likely to invade Mexico on their own' side, you have big places with agricultural roots and curriculums like Clemson, Auburn, Perdue, Amherst, and all 'State' colleges not near an ocean. Heck, even the ones that are near an ocean. Most of these places also have continuing education and non-matriculated courses, so you can take classes without actually being a student. Since i'm on a tangent about adult agricultural learning, Modern Farmer had a great article called " Back to (Farm) School", where it highlighted cool places like Farmer University in Cali, and The Farm School in Mass. All of these places would probably love our farmetal alchemist. Now why did they take away the :cow: emote?

Yeah, I went to the University of Connecticut, and that place started out as an aggy school pretty much entirely. The agricultural department is still huge. (I was dormed about half a mile down the road from the cow fields. They stunk so loving bad in the summer months. On the upside: the ice cream made on campus was excellent. UConn was mostly dairy, not too much that I can recall in the way of crops. Of course, I wasn't in the aggy programs.)
