It's illegal to impersonate military personnel, so it's more likely that he only put his dress uniform on to try and make himself look more impressive and isn't very good a putting it together.

Also, you get a shitload of ribbons for stupid reasons. Unit did good and got a citation? Everyone on in the unite gets a ribbon! Pass basic? Here's your ribbon! The individual ribbons matter, but the number doesn't mean much unless the guy's chest is covered.

Yeah, it's an extremely lovely thing to do, but unfortunately 'being a dick' is not generally considered a crime. If you were impersonating a soldier to get a veteran's discount, or sneak onto a base, or something like that, that is indeed illegal and they will throw a big heavy book at you. If you just want to put on a rented uniform and a bunch of ribbons and badges you didn't earn so you can look cool on the Internet or impress girls or whatever, you're a gigantic rear end in a top hat, but you aren't a criminal.

I remember a few years ago one of my extremely conservative friends in the Marines posted a chain photo on Facebook of a guy who was impersonating an officer (someone could tell because his ribbons were in an incorrect order or something), apparently to pick up chicks, and it was a call to arms to hunt this guy down and bring him to justice, or something. It was in the hundreds of thousands of likes category.

Military people hate it when people impersonate.

She posts a helpful clarification in a comment beneath it: "Before anyone points out that the numbers are inaccurate, I know. This is just funny. The more accurate figure is 47% of productive people paying for the other 53%."

Nevermind that the 47% includes retirees and people on medicare, or that if you believe that people who work full time (possibly at multiple jobs) and still don't make enough money to pay federal income tax (never mind the other taxes they do pay) are "unproductive" and worthy of derision, you're a shithead, nevermind those things, this is just funny

If the 47% wanted a better life they should just all become the 53%, because that's how math works

(edit: I'm apparently dyslexic with numbers and had them backwards initially--thanks for catching, posters beneath me)

She can't even get her own stupid narrative right. 47% was supposedly the number of deadbeats, while 53% were those who paid more in federal income taxes than they got back.

One thing that always baffled me about the 47%/53% figure was that if those stats were, you know, accurate, it would show profound problems with how we organize society, because hey, if we set up society so 47% of people are struggling to get by and need support even when employed, that seems like we hosed up somewhere. But nope, 47% of people are lazy, complaining bums who should get better more jobs!

I won't ever understand how someone can look at a person who is working 2 menial jobs 70 hours a week and think they aren't productive. This came up on reddit quite a lot the past few weeks with the fast food strikes. Most people said something along the lines of "Low skill required = low wage". When presented with the fact that its very difficult to support a family on this wage it was "Well she should have gotten an education instead of getting knocked up :smug:". I was surprised how little sympathy existed for the striking workers. Maybe I shouldn't have been.

Americans believe education is a panacea. Get an education, you're in the free and clear and will have a good job. Of course, did you get an education and now not have a good job? Shouldn't have studied philosophy :smugdog:. The fact is that most older people are completely unaware what the job market is actually like nowadays, so they can't imagine it being the way it actually is, where nobody is willing to give you full-time, where a full-time job at entry-level wages is unsustainable so you'd need that second job anyway, and where you're mercilessly worked to the bone.

And as a consumer who would like to support good labor practices, it's infuriating, because if I don't go get fast food (not a common occurrence anyway) I'm still supporting bad labor practices because I can't name an industry that doesn't treat their employees like poo poo that most Americans have to interact with on a regular basis.

The closest you will get is unionized supermarkets and from what I hear UPS (and USPS, but they are government, so socialism). Oh and in and out.
Local businesses can run the gamut from terrible (remember most fast food restaurants are franchise, so they are actually "locally owned") to great, and it is hard to tell which is which.

Nearly all of my grocery and gasoline spending goes to Costco. That, and if they're missing a product I like, I can fill out a comment form and they'll usually restock it again. And their checkout lines are pretty fast. Costco is a fantastic place to shop.

What gets me is, even if a non-philosophy degree actually did guarantee you a living wage, how in the hell is it okay to condemn another human being to a lifetime of drudgery and misery because of a mistake (not getting that math degree) they made when they were young and didn't know any better?

edit: I ask, already knowing the answer. It's all about having someone to feel superior to. I'm okay living in a nice cardboard box as long as there's someone out there with a really lovely cardboard box
