You should watch Akagi and read Gambling Emperor Zero since they're both made by the creator of Kaiji and have that same element to them.

Three episodes into Serei no Moribito and I'm loving it. Great art and animation bring an interesting setting to life. Can't believe I'd never heard of it before last week.

Does anyone happen to know the name of this one zombie manga? The whole setup was that the MC was a teenager (I think?) and was in prison when poo poo went south. I remember reading the like 5 chapters translated around a year ago then completely forgot about it. It wasn't too amazing but it seemed like it could have ended up being interesting.

So, uh, four years late I finally got around to watching the second season of Birdy the Mighty DECODE.

:stare:

Holy shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. The first season was okay, not spectacular, but okay, but the second season- holy shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. It's amazing. Plot, character, the animation (especially the animation)- everything. Mind-blowing leap in quality. Why did nobody tell me it was amazing?

People should watch. Just, generally, people in general should watch. It is about a space cop that can punch people in half fighting space terrorists that are animal people. And it is about what has been done to you, and what you have done, and how you respond to that, and how you move on.

Do it. Go now.

All the stuff with Birdy and the space people was great. Might watch some episodes again and just skip the school stuff. The second season has one of my favourite anime fight scenes.

I'm looking for something despair inducing. Characters up against insurmountable odds. Something that'll make me say "Holy poo poo, how could they EVER get out of this jam?" I watched the most recent Berserk film and it was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Is there anything else out there that captures that struggle so well?

Well, there's Attack On Titan, for starters.

Also, you should really read I Am A Hero. I don't want to say anything else about it, but read the entire first volume before making a decision. I love the poo poo out of this series. It's okay to skip the main character's insane rambling monologues most of the time, but don't skip around, read that volume start-to-finish if you start it at all.

Hell I'll say EVERYONE should read that one volume at least. Man it's so good. :allears:

Yeah everyone should read this and the sequel. Fate/Zero is pretty much nothing but people up against impossible odds struggling for their unattainable goals. Kaiba was pretty crushing the further you got in the story, though I'm not sure it necessarily matches up with your request, it might be worth a shot.

Saikano isn't about the struggle, it's just about completely helpless protagonists getting metaphorically hosed over and over and over with no recourse except to look sad about it and commit involuntary genocide.

I mean, if he wants the answer to "how could they ever get out of this jam" to be "ahahaha, as if" then sure, watch Saikano.

Dear ADTRW,

What is the difference between Yuruyuri and Yuyushiki?

Blhue
Apr 22, 2008

Fallen Rib
They're pretty similar, come to think of it. Yuruyuri is a slice of life comedy with an entirely female cast, many of whom have crushes on one or more other member of the cast. Despite that, there's not really much overtly sexual content to the show, so it doesn't really feel as skeezy as that sounds. Yuyushiki is also a slice of life comedy with an entirely female cast, but mostly lacks the lesbian thing. 2 of the 3 main girls frequently sexually harass the third, but they're more messing with her than out of any romantic interest.

Jesus God seriously. Punpun is some of the most relentlessly bleak storytelling I've ever actually found worth reading, in that it is arguably not merely misery porn but an intelligent dissection of the most menacing and woebegone aspects of humanity.

There's Leiji Matsumoto's Gun Frontier. It's about Harlock and Tochiro being cowboys. It's also skeevy as hell with tons of rape and sexual violence against women because Matsumoto is a creepy bastard when left to his own devices. I haven't actually seen the anime and I hear it's toned down but I have read some of the manga and it get's pretty bad. Though it might count as a space western in a loose sense because the entire planet is like a western movie.

There's also this one shot OVA called Early Reins.

So I got a crunchyroll subscription to watch Attack on Titan and have been watching a bunch of anime while I have it. I thought Shin Sekai Yori and Gurren Lagann were excellent, Fate/Zero, Baccano and Eureka Seven were just okay. I guess I'm looking for stuff that is serious (or completely over the top like Lagann but don't half rear end it) and doesn't drag on forever (like 50 episodes max). Anything else worth checking out along those lines? It doesn't have to be on crunchyroll.

What do you mean by serious? Action-packed, dramatic, mystery, horror, all can be considered "serious". I'm guessing you don't want comedies, but do you want hardcore stuff and not lighthearted things, lots of fighting, violence, etc.

If it's less "serious" and more "doesn't have pointless tits and panty shots", then that widens the amount of stuff that can be recommended. Hell, there's even a few good comedies out there, and one of them is airing right now alongside AoT!

For drama, I'd suggest Usagi Drop, though it's mostly slice-of-life. They put it back on Crunchyroll apparently, and it's only 12 episodes long. It's about a single dad who adopts his grandfather's illegitimate child after he passes away and raises her as his own. It's one of the most heartwarming series I've seen, has ZERO fanservice, and every episode is fantastic. One of my favorite anime series. Don't ever read the manga, just watch the anime, it has all the good parts.

The Eccentric Family is currently airing and is an awesome(and beautifully drawn) show about Tanuki and Tengu in a modern world. The human characters look a little odd but it's such a surreal, magical-feeling show that I can't help but love it. Very very little fanservice, if any. Can be light-hearted, slice-of-life, fun, dramatic, and action-packed at any given time.

Servant x Service is the comedy airing at the moment, about a group of workers with weird quirks working in a civil servant office in Japan. Has some fanservice with Lucy, one of the main characters, who has enormous boobs, but other than that it's mostly an actually good(!!) slapstick and slightly dramatic/romantic comedy from Japan. Those are pretty rare, to be frank. Most of the episodes have been great and the characters develop fairly realistically, with some pretty nice twists as it goes along. One of the highlights of the season.

edit: ah, didn't see your edit. Alright, I'll dig up some fantastical series for ya then.

edit: well poo poo, a lot of series I remember Crunchyroll having at one point, they no longer have. That's disappointing. I'll keep looking.

I've heard Kaiji is really fantastic but couldn't tell you much about it. I'm sorry man, I had a few things to suggest but they apparently aren't on Crunchyroll anymore. :(
