We have a New Rap Order album coming out; the cover art is a painting someone did of him dressed as a pharaoh and we're gonna have a bunch of pyramids and illuminati/freemason symbols hidden in it. Album sounds hype and I enjoy your/his style it also reminds me of Metro Zu. Also today I got to make a music sub-folder called Goon poo poo, I hope yours are all named the same. This rap poo poo just got real.

On the last page a couple rappers asked for criticism and both identified with lacking a certain element to their raps. It's not a simple question to answer, but you're right in thinking that having that self-doubt and questioning will always help push you further. My advice is to rap over your favourite rap songs until you're outshining (in your personal opinion, improving on) the original rapper's delivery with his own bars (my personal jams to rap along to are usually Kanye West but w/e works). It will help your delivery a lot so always do it. I'm pretty sure I heard that advice on here somewhere, maybe that How to Rap thread that thndrthf posted in. There was some really good advice in there, not sure if it's still around. Maybe we should pull one up to discuss rapping over production?Thoogsby posted:flipped an isaac hayes sample I really love this.

Alright fellas, I put this up at the start of the month and I've been getting a lot of good feedback about it. Bearing that in mind, I decided I wanted to show it to y'all in the hopes that I'll get some real, in-depth critique on it. That, and it features production from our very own THNDRTHF, lanzy and ashgromnies. The gist of what I was going for lyrically was just trying to find different niches to fill with each track. Anyway, please take a listen to F O R M S https://wormwoodmt.bandcamp.com

Whatsup PWH crew? After realizing that becoming a serious producer/MC was mostly a pipe dream, caused by being strungout on various pills and hard drugs, went back to just being a fan/listening. Anyway, an old friend hit me up about doing some verses on a little mixtape. Nothing serious but I don't wanna just phone it in. I know about the snare on the 2 and 4 and basic stuff but was wondering if you guys had any tips on how to get better at staying in the pocket on more complex beats? Obviously practice but any specific things that helped you guys?

# ? Sep 5, 2013 04:25 |

What do you mean by complex beats? Like 2-step? Maybe provide an example.
|
# ? Sep 5, 2013 14:03 |

I guess complex wasn't really the word I was looking for. With older breaks, it's easy but some of these have so much instrumentation and drum patterns that flip a lot. I always wrote 16s that each bar rhymed at the end and if I could slip another one in, the middle or beginning. The problem is that doing it that way, the flow sounded off a lot of the times and definitely was not in the pocket. I have been counting bars of songs I think have good flow and sometimes the rhymes hit on the 4 but I get lost in some of the faster, multisyllabic stuff. I know I need to write a lot and listen for bars in other songs. Just wondering if anyone else was able to break the habit of just doing 4 rhyme schemes in a verse. Or suggestions on other ways to keep from writing like a youtube comment on an instrumental.

Hey producers just finished my first beat after a long time of learning programs and stuff like that, not too proficient at mixing or mastering so that was definitely the biggest thing missing from this piece imo. My DAW of choice is of course Dr. Drum https://soundcloud.com/spoils-1/feelings Edit: posted cause I was wondering if you guys had any advice or if someone wanted to sign me to da Roc spoils fucked around with this message at 00:15 on Sep 6, 2013 |

Backup Snacks posted:Whatsup PWH crew? After realizing that becoming a serious producer/MC was mostly a pipe dream, caused by being strungout on various pills and hard drugs, went back to just being a fan/listening. Pipe dream or not it's still possible with enough practice and dedication. Dreams aren't inherently unreachable, you just need to be willing to take as many shots as it takes. I'm not trying to inspire anybody or anything it's just how I see it, and it saddens me to see would-be musicians demotivated by the word "dream" which is such an ambiguous term for anything to do with real life. Sorry, I'm done now. Also sorry for not posting in here for a while, new goal is to post stuff on that beat for you ashgromnies by this Thursday lol i work overnights so it's hard to keep up sometimes with accidentally sleeping all day and whatnot. edit: for actual feedback on getting back into it and bars and poo poo. maybe read a book on it, for me I just rhyme as i go, i guess i mostly meld my rhymes to my thoughts, and use different rhyme schemes for different effect. it's not something that comes natural in writing, but to rhyme isn't that hard. to work on that, I freestyle, whether the sentences linking the rhyming words are gibberish or not, it helps get the rhyming words flowing. you hear other rappers differentiate their rhyme schemes, so do that in your own raps. just copy how you see it but in your own interpretation. eventually you'll adopt it as your own. im still self conscious about my poo poo idk i just know that by creating more and raising the bar for yourself you'll get better.. so yeah you know the gist of it its practice. the pros are still practicing when theyre creating as well eedit: theres no formula for how the creative process really works so do what works for you and have fun with it! you gotta like doin it to take it seriously so dont think im trying to persuade you to pursue it as a career or anything conventionalcat fucked around with this message at 15:08 on Sep 7, 2013 |

Thanks cc, that was inspiring. I love hip-hop and have been writing "raps" since I was like 8. But I had this idea that it would be a lot easier than it is. I've accepted I'm not a beatmaker but I like a lotta the poo poo I've written, just need to work on some stuff. Been reading up on bars and how to link them without using just rhymes on the 4 (or 2 and 4) and realizing I don't have to stick to 4 4 bar rhyme schemes. I've been listening a lot closer to see how different rappers flow on different songs and I think I was trying to box myself into some lame, formulaic stuff. Also been reading through the thread and trying to freestyle to some of the beats. And seeing people progress as producers/MCs is awesome.
