Sash: Yeah, that's a problem with recruits in general. It isn't just the US- there's been some stories in China about the rising obesity problem limiting the pool of potential soldiers. Also: Size difference alone would make a huge factor (Re Steelers/Pats). The Steelers offensive line was just north of 250 pounds per player, that is not going to hold up.

If you're entertaining size difference between then and now it's more important that the run game would stop, like completely for Pittsburgh. Being able to legally decapitate a guy on D running a crossing route probably wouldn't make up for that.

My point wasn't really about size. Even the worst teams of today would dominate, thats jsut a given the way the game has evolved. My point is that a pass heavy offense that relies on crossing routes wouldn't fare well in the 70's. Just like how the run heavy teams of then wouldn't fare well in today's game. My point is that given all these various simulations and comparisons made, there is just too much to take into account. Like if you are going to say that Pats today would change to a power running game, then why couldn't the Steelers similarly bulk there players up and have the training and facilities of today? If you are going to allow for any changes, its only fair to allow for the past teams to also have some adaptations and advantages of the modern era, otherwise whats the point. The 0-16 Lions would dominate any SB champ from before 1980-something.

I just looked it up, Mike Webster was 6'4", 255 at center for those Steeler teams. Their current center, Maurkice Pouncey is also 6'4". And is listed as 305 lbs. Webster was considered undersized for a center, but still, 50 loving pounds, incredible. Oh, and remember, the NFL has its PED problem under control. Better training techniques and dietary practices account for a league made up of players who are half a human heavier and still faster than players of only 20-30 years ago.

This kind of goes back to my original point about the innovations on both sides of the ball as far as scheming goes, those Steelers would never have seen a 46 defense, teams were completely clueless on how to block a guy like LT when he first came into the game and going through that happened to improve protection in general, the idea of spreading the field horizontally might have existed but wasn't well explored, and so on. I don't know, I guess I agree that a modern offense would change quite a bit if you plopped it down in the 70s. It would be interesting to see though. Actually I'm probably most excited about the thought of Brady begging for flags.

Fixed fights, head trauma, lack of good American heavyweights, and later the rise of MMA all contributed as well of course, but I think the biggest factor is that kids want to have FUN. And when there's 5 or 6 kids playing together it's a lot easier to play a game of 3 on 3 basketball, or toss the ball around at each other, than it is to lace up and set up a round-robin sparring session.

Showtime's NFL show had Pete Prisco on to talk about his column. He was quite proud of himself for stirring up a controversy. I had to turn it off when within ten words coming out of his mouth I realized that despite all the people telling him what was wrong with his column, he still doesn't know or understand the fundamental issue.
