... Has Obama even said anything about directly interacting with the rebels so far? I was under the impression from my watching the news that he's been very specific about strictly applying a punishment to the Syrian government without actually getting involved in the civil war. Pretty sure it was Lindsey Graham, and to a slightly lesser extent, Old Man McCain who have hard-ons about "upgrading the opposition".

It's not healthy to stop being friends with people because of their politics, doing so only ensures you'll live inside an echo chamber. That assumes their politics aren't clearly abhorrent of course. I have a hella conservative friend who I can agree with more than disagree, and he's the kind of guy who thinks all his opinions through. Meanwhile I know a LOT of people who are "conservative" but don't really think about or discuss it much, which is also fine. Honestly, and this isn't a dig at anyone, the echo chamber is right here.

I will let you guys know the moment I get some motherfucking dumb poo poo from my liberal friends, but the worst that is going to get is probably something from the Huffington Post or a cross-post from pointless Facebook meme factories like Being Liberal. On a scale of 1 to Liberal Logic 101, even Being Liberal usually only registers about a 0.5. There's some petty party tribalism, especially during presidential elections? Not that exciting.

I get that all of you are super-political and may live in Bible belt states or other red patches, constantly facing off with ignorant dipshits. My Facebook feed is mostly updates from nytimes, onion, George Takei, and cat macros. I've turned Facebook into a replacement for iGoogle and am now on the next level, man. Seattle has its share of young political "renegades" who are going through a libertarian phase, but it's also one of the old strongholds of the Occupy Movement. We have calorie information posted on the walls in fast food joints, outlawed plastic bags, an all-pervasive recycling movement, marijuana, gay marriage, we're working on a $15/hour minimum wage, you name it, we're ahead of most cities. Having to argue about how Obama doesn't want us to have AK-47s because the election was rigged is caveman poo poo and people like that would find it hard to hold a job here. Because they're loving dumb.

The state is completely different on the other side of the mountains, but Seattle has played a major part in keeping the state government blue for a while now.

This thread is generally getting posted conversations from people who clearly can't be reasoned with. Occasionally I have to shame one girl into not posting anti-vaccine bullshit from clearly disreputable sites once every three months, and she's from Minnesota. That is about it. Truth be told, most of my good friends are not really on Facebook.

I feel like this comes off as holier-than-thou, so keep on fighting the good fight, I guess. But if my Facebook had as much intolerably stupid poo poo as the typical poster here, I would probably just cut out the "friends" part and use it entirely as a rolling newsfeed, which it is pretty good at. If there is an Internet battlefield worth fighting over, it's Reddit right now. If you can't get enough of your ignoramus not-really-friends, you should use their level of discourse to infuriate them, which some of you are doing.

There's a time and a place for building consensus with like-minded people. It's very important that you get the hell out of that situation occasionally is all. No one here lives in a perfect bubble of people who agree with them, so it's OK to occasionally flee to the Liberals' Free Hugs and Cursing Conservatives Zone. The danger sets in when you're so enmeshed in a particular perspective that you become selectively blind to its faults, or the advantages of other methods of thought.

I know it's weird, but some people just love arguing. Some of my best friends through life and I have argued up a loving storm 24/7 about practically anything just because adversarial communication can be massively entertaining as well as educational. And possibly because we love the sound of our own voices. My best friend through high school and I were both debaters, and even other debaters would occasionally tell us to shut the hell up because our constant jousting was stressful to even listen to. We were just having fun though, exploring some newfound homosexuality knowledge and interests through the fine art of good faith argumentation with a splash of playful ad-hom on the side.

I used to just not go on Facebook at all because it was starting to feel like some bizarre conspiracy to keep me permanently enraged at horrible people saying horrible poo poo. The site's actually usable now that I've instituted a policy of unfriending serial posters of noxious poo poo. Why would I want to be friends with racists? Why would I want to be friends with people who think fast food workers should be in constant misery? Why would I want to be friends with people who respond to feminist posts with long bullshit digressions about the horrors of Marxist feminism? What exactly am I supposed to be getting out of these people on a personal level that excuses that? Are some of you characters from Trainspotting? "Well, he's always posting horrible libertarian garbage that mostly amounts to "gently caress everybody but well-off white men", but he's a mate!" I mean, there's always things to disagree on, but a lot of what I see here goes beyond disagreement and into toxic bigotry, malice, and hate speech, and I just can't imagine welcoming that into my life.

I mean, call it an echo chamber if you must but it beats constantly being angry at people.
