Yes, they expand their borders. If you start close to one or place a unit nearby you can watch it happen. I don't think they buy tiles, though. They're fairly aggressive about improving their tiles, too.(For the sake of the allying thing, but given all the talk of the AI not bothering to improve it's tiles, it's funnly than the non civs are 'better' at it.)

Does this make Feitorias more or less useless? I haven't actually tried yet in my Portugal game, as I'm allied with all easily reachable CSes anyway.

Also goddamn CSes on tiny islands requesting religion. I can't help you if every inch of your territory is covered in random units.

Alternately, improve the "Plus" map scripts so they don't create such tiny islands. There's no reason for 50% of Pangea Plus to be ocean.

City states like to snake around for luxuries, so they usually end up with at least a few. Feitorias aren't useless, but opportunities to make use of them aren't very common.

I started a new game (prince, france) last night, and did a different opener. I used to do the original 4 cities build order but I looked up some others last night and growing your city a bit instead of just pumping out settlers makes a huge difference, as well as optimizing your production when building settlers.

Some dude's home city was within growth range of 4 salt, some deer and bananas. I settled in the jungle getting bananas and 2 salt in the original city radius, then bought the rest of the needed tiles.

I managed to get every wonder I wanted, and have a science and culture/tourism lead. I have stolen every artifact I've seen in the game. I just undertook a campaign on my continent (starting from 45 happiness!) and stole the great wall by taking one city, and 4 wonders including the statue of zeus by taking another, and razed most of the rest of the cities. I've managed to bribe most city states, and I think I have a science lead.

My build order was different in that I started with a scout (normally do workers and settlers), then a monument, and... I don't remember the rest. But I used to start with a worker (who often could not do anything for a few turns while I researched), then just settlers and after the third settler my city would be a bit sucky. With this game, I still had 3 cities by around turn 65 and my main city was already of a decent size.

I think everyone hates me now because I'm such a warmonger!

Tell that to me most of the times I play on prince and get my rear end handed to me. I know there are harder difficulties, but I don't play them for a reason.

I'm just astounded at how important good placing (I just trusted my capital's settler's placing and it was loving amazing) and growth rather than pumping out settlers, is.

I hear that. Mine felt worse though, because I did it with the free settler from liberty before the CS even added an extra tile. Then I bought up any useful tiles besides the luxury and they got stuck with 2-3 plains and the rest was flat desert.

Oh man, my current game has a Rome in 2nd place who has waged no wars with only 2 cities and an Ethiopia who has shat out settlers like nobodies business and controls half the world :v:

It's a huge pain in the arse too, I was planning on doing that byzintine tourism strat of 3 faith buildings as follower tenets and then grab the reformation belief that gives tourism from them.

But ethiopa lucked out on huts/CS to get a super quick pantheon and then his crazy good shrine replacement carried him through to getting the first religion where he took the mosques. Leaving me with cathedrals (great!), pagodas (not bad) and then eventually Monasteries on the enhance (poo poo as I have no wine or insense!) He and Rome also took globe theatre and a few other tourism wonders for no real reason except to be dicks I guess.

Still, I'm sticking with it and trying to put a dent in Ethiopia is proving to be really difficult, its the modern era, he is best friends with everyone so I can't pay them off to war him, he is way ahead on techs so I can't do it myself and he has so much cash he just buys out CSs to control the world congress.

I'm on 200 tpt and about to win the international games though, my 10 000+ saved up faith is all going on musicians for the worlds biggest concert in Ethiopia very soon :getin:

My second-to-last Venice game was on a poorly chosen but not ridiculous set of map choices which left me with one city state (and no other civs) within pre-Ocean travel.

Venice is really powerful, but they're more dependent on map conditions than most other factions, and don't support all playstyles.

I think so. If you're playing on Immortal they're basically completely unstoppable if you're given enough time to buy 2-3 city states because each one of them has an army capable of standing toe-to-toe with an AI. It only gets worse the later the game goes as your trade routes kick in.

I'm with you. The early game makes me feel like I'm getting destroyed by the AI. They're all at 2 or 3 cities and I still haven't produced a settler yet.

I usually go scout-monument-shrine-settler and by the time I get the settler going, I usually have the option to go for the Great Library. If I do that, then I'm even further behind in settlers.

In my current game, I have just completed the Great Library, playing as Poland and my first settler is on the way, but France is pushing into me with crappily placed cities. So I know that if I have to make an aggressive push I won't even have any puppets that are worth keeping.

I honestly think I just need to turn off the scoreboard on the right side of the screen and it would help my game a lot because I wouldn't use that worthless early game metric to gauge my progress.

The one thing that really annoys me is the inability to set up colonies on resources, especially since you're encouraged to only have a few cities.
