chocolateTHUNDER posted:Good thing our government gave those big companies all that money to build out their networks and service areas over the past 15 years! The kick in the teeth is, if I understood an AT&T technician from a while back, U-verse (or at least DSL) IS available here, except their DSLAM(?) simply can't support any additional subscribers and there are absolutely zero plans to upgrade it. I can't verify this of course. If I check residential DSL availability here it says it's not available, if I check for business class it says yes but I must call to complete the order and I've yet to get a straight or consistent answer from a CSR as to why I can't get service other than 'not at this time'. Meanwhile, one of my best friends who lives in bumfuck nowhere a couple of hours NorthWest of Birmingham enjoys some insanely fast DSL at his house that's literally 3 miles down a dirt road.

Easier to roll out high speed Internet in less urban areas. It's a lot of work to tear out existing infrastructure in a city and throw in new stuff. Benefit of living in bumfuck nowhere, though!

This is a stupid "just call and ask" kind of question, but just in case someone might know... My family's account has an extra "courtesy" upgrade on it due to a gently caress up by Verizon; it is in the form of a note on the account. Is Best Buy (or any other third party for that matter) able to see these "notes" on an account? Or will I have to go directly through Verizon to use it?

Dangle an upgrade in front of you for various reasons, but only show it in a way that let's corporate stores do it. I've had customers have varying degrees of success calling them up and telling them they want to do it elsewhere, but it can be a bit of a process and you have to be firm and consistent, but not a total douche. Sprint did this all the time.

Anyone use the Ghost 100 wireless charger from Verizon? I'm looking for something more substantial than the tiny little circle ones if possible.

I have the Ghost 100 on my nightstand at home, and some cheap Chinese charger I got on Amazon and posted about in the Android phone thread. I wish I had just bought two of the Ghost 100. The design looks pretty crappy (it says "DROID" on it front and center, and has a pulsing red light on the front) but it seems a lot more reliable about actually charging through a case than the cheap one.

Crosspost from the Android thread: Anyone use this deal? Anything I should know if I go about buying a phone this way? Best Buy and Amazon are out of stock on the new Droids and they bumped up their price 50 dollars making this now the cheapest route to a new phone. http://www.comcast.com/wireless.html E: I went ahead with this and it works pretty well. They're sending my phone out Thursday when Verizon restocks. Easy savings of 100 bucks (plus 10 dollars a month off your comcast service) without dealing with phone trade-in or anything. I've heard from I think phandroid (I know it's poo poo) forums that some stores are letting you trade in any Motorola towards a new DROID for the $100 credit. I'm very tempted to go try this and get essentially 200 off since technically right now my account is showing I paid full price for the phone

It comes up automatically with an eligible device, it's not put in manually. And if you try to convince them, they can just google it or go to Motorolatradeup.com to get the actual details.

I'm looking for opinions on what to do about this. Service absolutely sucks in my neighborhood. There doesn't appear to be a reason for this, other than it just does. It's not just inside my house, it's anywhere. When you're indoors, its way worse, and you cannot have a conversation with someone for more than 5 minutes before the chance of the call dropping increases to near 100%. It's been this way for a long time, and I think I'm finally at my breaking point with it. Obviously we use wi-fi for data stuff, but since we have the Verizon Home phone thing, and 4 other VZW devices in the house, all of which never see more than a single bar on the weakest network I'm getting pissed about it. So I called tech support. He immediately noted how bad the reception was, and dispatched actual service techs. The techs call and leave a message saying they don't see anything wrong, go buy a range extender. Really? I have 7 devices on one plan(it's a shared plan with my friends). My family has 2 more, and the verizon home connect thing. I think I pay Verizon enough money for them to tell me this. Am I wrong? Should I call and complain? I don't normally do such things, but I wanted to see what other people have to say about it before I do. AT&T in my neighborhood works fine. AT&T will be getting the only 2 devices(N5 or HTC one max) I want next anyway, and I might switch regardless (except for the fact I'm the primary account holder for the 7 devices shared plan, so I don't know how I'd be able to get out of that). Additional notes: The guy on the phone said there are 5 towers in my area, and I'm connecting to the best one. I think the one I connect to is very close by, and I've never gotten a real answer from a Verizon person on this, but I am assuming a tower broadcasts like an umbrella, outward, and we're underneath it or something. My town has full 4G support on paper, and if I drive 1-2 miles I do switch over to it, and finally start getting real data speeds. My neighbors have had the exact same complaints, it's not just me or my rooted devices doing evil signal crushing things.

I finally got around to processing a warranty claim on my Galaxy S3 for a broken audio jack and I've received the replacement phone. Should I do a factory reset on my defective phone before I send it back or am I being overly paranoid about my personal info? I'm worried formatting the phone will look suspicious to whoever inspects my defective phone that I was rooting it or whatever and I want to give them as little reason as possible to attempt and charge me for the replacement.

Since the damage fee is $299 for smartphones the only way Verizon can reasonably defend it is by sending you pictures of your seriously busted-rear end phone along with pictures of the pristine FedEx return box via email. Everything that goes into the central returns warehouse be it phone memory or SD cards is officially wiped and discarded. (There is a child porn clause so please don't return that.)

Upgrading my current phone imminently. Ignoring for a moment my concerns about maintaining my unlimited data plan, what are the top smartphone picks on VZW right now, or is there something awesome within the next month or so I should hold out for? Been looking at the HTC One, Droid Ultra, and S4. S4 and One are already 4-6 months old. Is the Ultra the clear winner right now?

The Ultra is actually the most redundant phone in Verizon's lineup right now. If you want a $199 motorola smartphone, buy an X. But you should really be buying the MAXX.

It's nice to have the freedom to pop my sim card into my laptop when I'm on a long bus or train ride to watch netflix and not have to worry about overages.

In that case you may want to look into the dumb-phone line switch if you want to save a bit of cash. You could even use the Comcast promotion to save 100 dollars that way, swap phones and then just pay the 10 bucks a month. You'd end up somewhere around 240 for the dumb phone line, and then 250ish for the phone + tax / activation.

The Maxx is awesome, feels really well made, lasts forever, and the gimmicks that Moto put it in are actually useful. Active notifications has totally changed how I use my phone, and touchless controls are pretty cool, although I'm not sure how much I'll use them. I'd definitely go in and check everything out at a store, you can't really go wrong with an S4, One or Maxx.

The Droid ultra is a rather weird choice to throw in there - but I understand why you did it. I wouldn't worry about the One and S4 being "old" devices, they actually have newer chipsets in them than the Ultra (although don't read too much into that, since at this point it hardly matters anymore) so there's no reason to cast them aside at this point. Let the One and S4 be your $199 choice, and the Droid MAXX be your $299 choice. Get the MAXX if battery life is a big concern to you. Otherwise, the S4 can take SD cards, which the One and MAXX can't. The one has a really nice screen, nice set of speakers, and aluminum construction though.

I keep seeing it posted here that folks are doing all kinds of crazy stuff to keep their unlimited, but why do you have to? I just recently upgraded to the HTC One, and when I ordered it through Amazon I had no issues with keeping my old plan (100 minutes, 250 text, unlimited data). Is this an in-store only thing where they want to force you off that plan?

There's not an option for unlimited data anymore when signing your new contract so it automatically puts you on the 2GB plan I'm pretty sure. E: ^ If that's true you got incredibly lucky.
