The videogame is based on the boardgame so cKnoor's intro videos might be of use.

I wasn't stating that they didn't know what they were doing, just that they have the opinion that they are the kings. That being said, yes, they do pretty much control the market, but they are losing some of their base to other games systems that are both cheaper and better written (though 6th ed 40K has been pretty well done.) But of course, this is a discussion for another thread. :)

Yeah. I think it's likely they lose players to other games. But they also gain new players. I'm not convinced the size of their player base is shrinking, in the US or in the UK, but they've always had a certain amount of churn.

Anecdotally, Warhammer Fantasy is completely dead at my local FLGS, and the nearby GW in Alamo closed. Warmahordes ate GW's fantasy players in Concord, CA. But if GW attracted some (maybe 20 or so? I dunno) new players somewhere else, then it's a net wash for them. Especially if those players are in the UK, where it is much cheaper for GW to operate due to having most of its corporate infrastructure and manufacturing already set up there.

Real hurthling!

The fantasy player base seems to skew older than 40k and I think many of them were ready for a game with more strategy and less random game ending explosions. My fantasy community basically ended too and forced me into wm/h

This is a bit short notice but if you are in or around Vancouver, Canada and are keen on Blood Bowl there will be the annual Spike! Magazine Tournament on the weekend of the September 14-15th. My club that hosts it went and had the trophy reforged after GW lost the original.

If you have always wondered what it is all about, this would probably be a super good event to pop in to watch a couple of games and chat with some of the players that will be there.

Love that trophy, maybe one day I'll come over and compete for it. :) Same time-ish every year?

How many coaches do you attract for the tourney? I can see from previous results it looks around 40-50, with even the occasional overseas players showing up.

How do you find the low TV plus skills packages? I was really surprised by the relative lack of bash teams at the top (dwarf, CD's, orcs), and the general variety of teams at the top - elves, humans, underworld(!). There has been a lot of debate here in Oz about TV vs skills packages, and how it changes the meta of a tournament.

Do you guys have a regular tournament schedule? Despite the distances involved, there are a lot of dedicated TO's here so as long as you can hop a flight for an hour or two then you could pick several per month.

Yeah, it is some time in September every year, and we get at least 45+ people showing up after the local lazies sign up at the door. We also are getting more people traveling for it. The first winner of the new trophy was a Dane, and he is coming back to defend his title.

The North American tournament scene is actually pretty good, I can think of three just in the Pacific Northwest with another 1-2 local tournaments in addition to the Spike! There are even more out east but I don't really know too much about them. My local league also runs a 6 month fixed perpetual league format, so I get my itch scratched really well.

We are really happy with the low TV, skill package format here and most tournaments I have been to employ some manner of it. In fact, I cannot really comment much on the change since it is what I am mainly familiar with. However the older guys that have more experience with earlier tourney formats are generally pretty happy with it. I think our standings for the last few years show that it opens up more teams to high level tourney competitiveness, though I think that the Underworld coach was also seriously good. Two years ago one of the guys that come up from Portland managed to build a Nurgle team that we still talk about, it was so fun to play against. Nurgle... Fun?!?

Just played my first full Blood Bowl game! I got the first touchdown and we finished with a tie, 1-1 :) Lots of fun! We missed a few rules here and there, but I got off a perfect pass to start a great running game straight up the the middle, then jinking to the left, just as time was running out.

Yeah and it looks like we have 4 of our 5 players (we do mostly 40K but have been branching out) interested in starting a league. I'm going to look at making and casting a multi-part game board and dugouts just for fun, maybe even a scoreboard.

e: I've found a couple of sites that do BB-specific models:

http://www.comixininos.com/ (lots of different original designs)

Are there any more sites I can tell our players to look at?

Here is the winner of the Spike! 2012 posing with the new trophy. Yes, the bottom is hollow so you can hold it (almost) like a gauntlet. I believe someone did manage to stab themselves in the head during, or shortly after the weekend pub crawl last year.

I made a field out of a framed cork board like you can find in an office supply store (I got mine at a church sale for $2) and a sheet of grass mat that I got at a train shop. I posted it on the forums but I'll be damned if I can find it. I had a score board and turn markers built in. It was fun and easy to do. If I remember I'll post new pics when I get home.

I painstakingly carved one half BB board's worth of flagstones into foam board. Took me like 3 months.

Stuck it down on a wood backing, and the whole thing warped to poo poo.

No. The only "real" gangs were from the basic and Outlanders set. There were a few gangs that appeared in the Citadel Journal and the Necromunda magazines, but those gangs were never really tested and are pretty much fan lists.

That being said, you could easily sub Redemptionists for Chaos - hell, they even look pretty similar.

You could port in any of the 40K 2nd edition armies using the Arbites as a conversion example for skills and points since the Arbites had rules in Necromunda and 40K 2nd edition both.

Even with his cost run run way up you could still have a single Space Marine wipe the floor with a dozen gangers so espect some lopsidedness.

berzerkmonkey

Oh yeah - I never even thought of converting 2nd edition 40K over. Good point. As for the SM running the table, that sounds totally realistic to me, considering in the fluff a squad can pretty much bring an entire planet to a standstill with hit & run operations.

Actually, it might be cool to have a squad of Marines up against a couple gangs as some sort of group game. Marines would probably still win, but it might be fun.

I want to say that and Eldar scouts too but can't remember where.

And yes, we kind of expected the Marines to dominate but we were taken a bit aback by how one sided it was. Say what you will about GW's 2E skirmish rules, they described what happens when street thugs go up again elite soldiers pretty well. :v:

I was thinking Chaos cultists, not Chaos Space Marines! I know one or two Marines would put a gang through the ringer right quick. I think there were some Ork rules from some White Dwarf that looked pretty fun and was hoping for similar ones for Chaos cultists. In that case, Cawdor or Redemptionists shouldn't be too far off. I was just hoping for some kind of mutations or human sacrifices or something cool like that.

You might want to look into the Scavvies - they have something about having to eat gang members if supplies run low. You could sub that out for sacrifices. I think they might have mutations as well, but I'd have to check my rulebook to confirm that.
