This picture was also taken from a car at 70 mph. Thanks, 1/4000! I definitely started out by running and gunning. I would change settings around and take 3-4 shots of the same scene. There's nothing wrong with it, particularly if you're having trouble understanding what settings you should use to get what you want. It's certainly the mark of a beginner, but I think one has to get familiar with photography before one can really start to compose.

Atomicthumbs, I don't think a single pair of headlights are quite as bright as you're assuming... I didn't do anything special, it's just a single 30 second exposure.
