I'd heard a couple of his tracks on Anjunadeep compilations and bought Stick By This based on your rec. It's fantastic. Like I mentioned earlier I have a hard time caring enough to differentiate between similar-sounding subgenres of EDM but would it be correct to call Dusky 'deep house' and the Dirtybird stuff more along the lines of 'tech house?'

1) Please don't use the term EDM. It's the equivalent of Nu-Metal or 80's Glam rock, just a term to pre-package artists and sell them to the masses.

2) I wouldn't care that much about genres either.

3) I'm seeing them tonight and I am hella excited. The club where they'll be at (Treehouse in Miami Beach) has subs that are like 7ft.

True. I guess I'm too used to having to explain to people what house or drum and bass and such are. I just call it all EDM and they understand what I mean. Everyone in my city just listens to indie rock bands covering Fleetwood Mac songs.

Yes I do. In Brickell. Treehouse is nice but the crowd is getting pretty wack. Story has good bookings but it's 90% bottle service douches that are clueless. The setup is magnificent though, pretty lights everywhere.

I'm sure we'll link up in the future, if you're not a mouth breathing weirdo we can hangout.

Isn't it both contradictory and profoundly stupid to get all mad about the term EDM, and then go "genres don't matter"? And how is "electronic music" even a better term than EDM?

I'm mad? News to me.

When I mean genres don't matter, I'm stressing that it's really unncesary to try to categorize every single piece of music that you listen to. That's how 'post-dubstep', 'future garage' and plenty of other made up genres came to life.

The only profoundly stupid thing is your post I'm afraid, but that's fine, you didn't get into the club this weekend or something? Did they have a no fedora policy?

Maybe that's easier for dilettantes, but real heads know the difference between blackened crust and crusty black.

y halo thar lol
EDM is not referring to all dance music though, when people use it it's pretty obvious it's a recent trend referring to a select group of artists/sounds.. that's my opinion anyway. It's an American-centric term for music which mostly not American. I use the term if i mean that particular 'scene' of super commercialized electrohouse/trance.

Ontopic i bought a new record the other day and feel i have to tell this thread about it as i was super impressed, even though i know you guys are generally not into the hard techno stuff. SUFR41, remixes of the acidtechno classic One Night In Hackney, the A-side was decent but then the 2 bside remixes are amazing;

Straight up acid techno, but one of the best examples of the genre ever in my opinion;

Looking forward to Tomorrowworld at the end of this month--the lineup for the Dirtybird stage and Ferry Corsten's stage are particularly exciting. In October, Above & Beyond are playing an acoustic set with a full orchestra at the Greek Theater and I'll be going to the Sunday night showing, then back to LA in November for Eric Prydz In Concert.

This all seems to be the sort of more mainstream stuff that gets derided in threads like these, but I thought I'd share since you asked and I'm outrageously excited.

I like the first hour mainly, after that I thought it was just so-so.

I haven't been to a live show in years. I went to a lot of them in college, since I could stay up to 3 am or whenever. Now it's like - I have to get up for work, I have to take care of my dog, etc. etc. :)

I think the best show I ever saw was either James Zabiela, a Phil K / Dave Seaman tag team set, or LTJ Bukem. This was at the now defunct Quest, which used to be Prince's club in downtown Minneapolis.

Probably for largely the same reasons Clapton and dozens of other artists did an Unplugged album somewhere in their career.
A&B are hugely talented musicians and this gives them a chance to arrange songs in such a way that they don't necessarily have to fit into the dance music mold.
They have a pretty large body of beautiful instrumental tracks outside of their typical Sun & Moon, Black Room Boy hits that are most popular.
I'm hoping they play tracks like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba-c6LIuluY rather than https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9aJO8NwsC4, as kickass as that last track is.

edit--on this webpage http://www.aboveandbeyond.nu/acoustic/ you can hear a sample of an acoustic version of Love Is Not Enough, to get an idea of what it's about.

Whilst that is all well and good, this is the techno thread and not the trance orchestra thread. The vast majority of techno tracks can't be played acoustically or arranged like that (some have though). Techno is about experimentation with sounds and making futuristic poo poo that doesn't make much sense in traditional music terms but works in a club.
