DrBouvenstein posted:So how come I only ever hear the same lovely stock sound effects like Wilheim scream, laughing kids, standard police chatter, and cat meow? Sure, there are a lot of stock sounds that you come to recognize over time, but the amount of stuff you haven't heard in one movie is magnitudes larger than the ones you have. Some things, like the Wilhelm scream (transcript if you don't want to listen to a podcast), are just used a tradition or in-joke, or are the products of the same sound designer for different movies. For the others, I honestly don't know. My favorite example of one is when you get screeching car tires as a car slowly pulls out of a driveway. DrBouvenstein posted:So how come I only ever hear the same lovely stock sound effects like Wilheim scream, laughing kids, standard police chatter, and cat meow? I took some sound design classes in school. Besides recording our own stuff, we used these: http://www.sound-ideas.com/sound-effects/feature-film-sound-effects.html Each studio has a library of stock sounds that any sound designer can use in their production, whether it's a film, tv show, or commercial. Each sample usually has about three to six variations recorded back-to-back on the same track, and you can cut out whatever is most suitable for your scene. But to answer your question specifically, my instructor said the reason you hear the same screen door banging in every movie is because these people are under a crunch and often just grab the first sample on a track and slap it in with minimal tweaking.
