For a latter era Dream Theater album I think it's pretty good. Time will tell. I mean, after this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTn4U-0kT4I things could only get better. I have no concerns about the snare drums; I feel such complaints are better reserved in discussion of their first two albums.

There's a new track from the upcoming Skeletonwitch album and I am really, really looking forward to the whole thing. I want to go to that Amon Amarth/Enslaved/SW show but it's on a bad day of the week to make a 3 hour drive. Bands need to stop going to Lawrence, Kansas, there's nothing of value there that you couldn't get in Nebraska

Did anyone else pick up the new Gwar yet? It's like half loving tribute to Cory Smoot, and half crazy Gwar story time. The former is far more off-putting than the latter. Album's a lot different than the last few musically, but I don't think that's any kind of surprise since Cory was doing most of the writing. Puts me in mind of Violence has Arrived but with more edge. Turns out they had several guys help out with guitar and writing duties on the album, and that seems fitting given it's their sendoff for Flattus. Zach Blair and Todd Evans (on guitar this time) were both back in the fold for the record, and that's pretty cool to me. I'm digging it so far, and I really can't wait to see how it plays out on stage. I caught their show in Tampa a few weeks after Cory died and it honestly got to me a bit hearing Oderus constantly bellow out for Flattus and point to the stars begging him to come back. Can't wait to catch them in November again. Will be my eighth time seeing them, and I'm dragging everyone I can talk into going along. Better to die with some friends.

I was at that show and I may or may not have totally shed a tear. Did you by any chance go to the Splattergod Records Gwar Meet and Greet in 2005? I think it was Smoot's first tour with them. I have the signed poster framed on the wall. :3

I think during Sick of You that night is the only time I've seen Brockie drop character mid-show. We'll never be sick of you either, Oderus Plus the inexplicable pool and waterfall set a hell of an ambiance. I wasn't at that signing, think it was when I was living in Minnesota. Would be from the War Party tour though, yeah? If it was then that was when I saw Gwar the first time though so there's that at least. Went into the show expecting to go out hating it, but instead walked out proselytizing.

Hey guys, this is a bit off topic, so if you want me to stfu just say so. Right, I'm looking for any heavy metal tracks that you know of that don't transcode particularly well to MP3, talking distorted cymbols or any other weird issues. Basically, if you think the track sounded better off of the CD than it did as a reasonable quality MP3, I want to know. Why? Well, there's a new audio codec around called Opus, turns out it's pretty drat good at the metals and rocks. But I think it could be better, so I'm looking for anything I might be able to throw at it to trip it up. Why can't I do this myself? Well, I suppose I could convert all of my music from FLAC to MP3, but that'd take weeks to listen to, so easier just to ask.

The intro to Amorphis - Two Moons sounded a tiny bit less compressed compared to the mp3 version to my ears.

Measly Twerp posted:Hey guys, this is a bit off topic, so if you want me to stfu just say so. Darkest Hour - Tranquil Devin Townsend produced and engineered this album with a pretty thick/tight mix, this song in particular seems to sound bad with any compression, from the echo of the snare at the beginning and the riff that follows, to the more atmospheric later part of the song where guitar parts that don't necessarily lend themselves well to such a thick sound are made into it. Both Torgeist demos - everything I've heard other than the Drakkar re-releases on CD/FLAC sounds like complete poo poo. It's a very raw sound of mostly treble that seems to be wrecked by any sort of compression. Fates Warning - The Sorceress (or anything from "Awaken the Guardian") Sounds fine with some codecs/rips, but I've heard some mp3s where Arch's incredibly smooth, glassy vocals have a bit of harshness due to the rip. I'm not sure on the sources of these, though, and there are many versions of this album. The original versions from 1986 have plenty of headroom, for sure.

There are more than a few bands who got the tone who just don't write music of the same quality, like Comecon and Entombed. There's a strong impact at first hearing that sound, which is great if you want people to pay attention to one song on youtube, but they are not of the same caliber as the golden era of Entombed. Should be interesting to see what they do. It can't be more unpleasantly self-indulgent than the last season of the LG Petrov and friends death n roll show.

I've posted about this band here before, but I got into them again recently and just wanted to share this wonderful metal music. This is still one of my top metal bands, and I have been a listener and player for quite a long time. It's just metal, probably closest to thrash, I don't know how to describe it. But definitely check it out, it's totally worth it. Amazing band and players. http://deadsea.bandcamp.com/track/northwitch

I may be wrong, but I guess this is the best place to say that I saw a preview screener of the Metallica: Through the Never movie last night. My comic book shop is also a music instrument store, and had screener tickets. Metallica is the band that made me fall in love with music. While I don't really listen to them anymore, (I now recognize that Lars' drums are really boring), I'm still a fan, I'll go to every show I can. (Seen them in 2002 and 2008. 2002 was my first concert, and I met the band backstage. They all signed my iPod, which is hanging in a shadowbox over my bed.) I'm a fan who appreciates every album. It's the hardest to do so for St. Anger, because the production was so godawful. Death Magnetic is pretty good. When I got the ticket, I started to doubt if I should go. I had no expectations. No, wait, I had negative expectations. Then I saw that it actually had decent reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so I thought, what the hell? If you didn't know, this movie (shot in IMAX 3D) is both a concert, and an actual movie story with a plot. While you're watching a Metallica concert, you're also following a nameless roadie, who is sent to go to a crew truck that ran out of gas. For a concert movie, it's a great experience. It's a cool setlist. The 3D effect is cool, it's neat seeing Kirk jump off the screen like that. The real star of the movie is the stage. The stage itself is made up of display screens, which change for each song. Blood pours across the stage for Creeping Death. Bells ring for For Whom the Bell Tolls. The movie plot is completely unnecessary. But of course it is. Did anyone have any kind of expectation otherwise? They should have just made a concert movie with backstage stuff or something. As it is, a hardcore Metallica fan might enjoy the actual music. Beyond that, you don't need to bother.
