I got to like halfway into episode 2 and gave up. Haven't touched it in 8 months. They didn't so much replace Andy Whitfield, as he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and died

That first season was great and I'm glad I watched it. Season 2 takes about 4 episodes to pick up steam. You really, really, really need to pick it back up. He grows into the role over the course of Season 2. Not watching further means you're missing out on Season 3, the best season of the show.

Now I feel bad for getting angry at the show for replacing him. Really, he died of cancer between season 1 and season 2? That must have been one mean aggressive cancer he had. He was buff as gently caress at the end of season 1 and he sure didn't look like he had cancer. How much time passed between those two seasons?

Also GayDude, did you watch Gods of the Arena? That should go a long way in getting you used to awesome Spartacus action without Spartacus in it.

After season one, you absolutely must watch Gods of the Arena before watching Vengeance.

It's confusing and they didn't help themselves by going by season titles instead of plain old numbers. Don't blame yourself. It should be: Blood and Sand Gods of the Arena Vengeance War of the Damned

GuyDudeBroMan posted:Yeah I think I did. Are you supposed to watch the prequel first? The prequel is really good, it has many of the elements of the first seasons and it introduces one of the best characters in the show. It also explains some of the character motivations in the first season. All agree that Liam McIntyre needs a few episodes to get into his role as Spartacus, but the season does pick up and gets rather good later on. The last season is the best season in my opinion.

The prequel is awesome, but it does suffer from one thing - they only had a limited amount of time to write it, and some sex scenes go on uncomfortably long just to fill air time. Like, I'm a fan of the over-the-top sex scenes, but the prequel really takes it a bit far.

The best part about this show is that the gay interracial couple are the only two to survive. And it's not even given special attention. It's probably one of the most progressive shows as far as gender and sexuality in all of TV.

Maybe one day soon the poles will outnumber the holes, and then we will know that we have truly reached peak progresivity

Progress march on! I'm surprised Macklemore hasn't written a song about the show yet.

It's astonishing how good Gods of the Arena is considering it was made in a few months from one episode they had planned to be a flashback. Apart from 'don't ever mention Gannicus again' it builds up the background of Crixus, Ashur's injuries, the hate between Batiatus and Selonius, the origins of Batiatus' burning ambition to be more then society deems him to be and how Lucretia is part of that. Even though it has no Spartacus it's my favourite season of the series.

The fight at the end of Gods of the Arena is also the best in the series as far as I'm concerned too. You can't beat slow-mo fire net. You just loving can't.
