It's a direct lift from the same scene in the manga. The only difference is that, as you said, whichever artist was in charge of eye animation decided to blow the budget on pupil detail. The manga version just has Mikasa's usual darkly colored eyes and is equally creepy.

I was concerned this episode in particular would feel like ten minutes of content stretched out over thirty minutes of episode, but dang were my worries ever unfounded. I'm really impressed.

I'm just gonna say that, for those like Phobophilia who plan to hop over to the manga once the anime finishes, it would be UNWISE to read anything in the thread since pretty much nothing but the current chapters get tagged. It's a minefield, so catch up on the manga first before reading the thread.

This episode was stretched a bit but so loving intense regardless that it was worth it. The filler bits were excellently done and the climax was great. This episode wins "best creepy faces of 2013" in my book.

Oh, absolutely. 2 more weeks for the anime, then another 2 weeks to catch up on the manga. And then the month-long wait between chapters :getin:

All of the Jean bits (him at the plan meeting, getting out of the carriage, fighting, trying to snap Eren out of it) are all filler but you couldn't even tell. Fantastic pacing and while they don't tell us anything you can't figure out, they're well done and cement Jean as Best Character. :3:

And for those hopping over to the manga, make sure to read the training arc (starts on chapter 15). It's mostly in the anime, but there are some bits that weren't and it's nice to see the happy days and familiarize yourself with the drawing style.

I decided to read the Mercy chapter in the manga and it was sort of amazing how much filler they actually made. I thought I accidentally skipped forward.

(Doesn't ruin the manga for anyone, but is an episode spoiler)Manga version: Mikasa: "The world is cruel." Eren: "... you're right." *CHOMP, TITAN FIGHT*

Also; don't read the Mercy chapter if you don't want to spoil what will probably be the season cliffhanger. It's true... this series just keeps piling more and more and more stuff onto you.

This season is ending, because there is literally not enough material currently for a second season. I imagine season two'll be tomorrow's fall, maybe a bit later.

This was a really good episode. Probably my favorite. Just so much crazy poo poo happening. I don't remember if that 3DMG trapeze move was in the manga, but it made me lose my poo poo a bit this time.

So next week is the last episode? Huh. I figure they could get another 13 out of what's left of the manga, but I guess it's better to not push their luck and risk it devolving into garbage. Also, one day I want someone to make a Youtube video of spliced scenes of Eva-01 and the Rogue Titan roaring at each other. Maybe throw Hulk in there.

Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
Some disconnected thoughts:

1. Holy poo poo, that was a GREAT EPISODE. Some definite gently caress yeah moments as Mikasa pulls her first Levi-tier sicknasty stunts and as Survey Corps Rookie Jean is the first among a sea of MP to start doing the MP's actual job.

2. This episode really drives home how well Mikasa's quiet-dead-inside craziness foils Eren's loud-violent-passion craziness.

3. Also drove home how much Armin's changed, no apologetic hesitancy in spitting out some hard loving truths to Eren and Annie.

4. The episode doesn't really disaffirm my ongoing theory that titanpeople can't shift without sunlight. It was made to seem like Eren was hesitant to shift because of his feelings for Annie, but maybe it just wasn't technically possible and Annie was aware of this? Probably like the only person who is still thinking this -_-

5. Man, I also can't help but feel like this whole thing is a HUGE deal in moving Jean, Armin, and Mikasa up the ranks. Once they get up high enough Levi and Erwin are gonna get killed off :smith:

6. Hanji's trap was set up asymmetrically to get Annie to fall on her back so that the net could be deployed at a realistic height. I love the little details this show thinks about :allears:

7. I'm betting that for a season ending they'll either capture Annie and learn some crazy secret about her titanshifting powers or introduce some hitherto unknown titan to decisively end the battle. Wait till next season to discover the identity of HUNGRY TYPE TITAN

Yeah, she somehow took a good mid-air titan swing, and managed to correct it with her thrusters and not land as a bloody smear.

My favourite thing is that the smashed bits of wall and stone and debris had some real weight to it, people were being beaned the gently caress out by them, instead of simply covering their heads with their arms as the camera shakes.

The President of Studio WIT (the AoT anime production studio) is a man of good taste and distinction.

Interview: George Wada, Producer of Attack on Titan
by Lynzee Lamb, Jul 23rd 2013

As Anime Expo drew to a close in Los Angeles, Anime News Network sat down with Studio WIT founder and president of George Wada to discuss the production of popular anime series Attack on Titan, its themes of isolationism, and the company's goals for the future.

ANN: The first thing I'd like to start with is that there was a really exciting announcement earlier by the president of Production I.G for Psycho-Pass season two. I don't believe its been announced in Japan yet. Is Studio WIT going to be involved again and are you going to produce for the second season?

George Wada: If there is a season two, I would like to work on it again. [laughs, then in English] Sorry!

When it comes to working on Attack on Titan, what does your job entail?

As a producer, my main job is to create an easier working environment for the staff.

Attack on Titan is popular with both fans in Japan in the West. What about it do you think makes it appeal to Western audiences?

I feel there are two reasons why Attack on Titan is popular in the West and around the world. The first reason is overall, the theme of overcoming the "Wall of Fear" plays a big role in the series. I think people overcoming that fear is relatable to the audience. The second reason is there are many cool looking action scenes using the 3D maneuver gear. I think that caught people's attention.

The Wall of Fear is a very interesting concept. Do you think that theme of isolationism shown in the series is unique to Japan or resonates with international audiences too?

The idea of being isolated within the wall originated with manga creator Hajime Isayama, who was inspired by Japanese culture. The Japanese people can become very isolated and enclosed, so it's more of a Japanese cultural idea.

You've worked on two series, Psycho-Pass and Attack on Titan, and both were popular with Western audiences. Do those kinds of shows appeal to you more? What kind of themes attract you creatively?

For Psycho-Pass, the overall theme and idea was inspired by the L.A. Confidential film as well as a lot of Western films. Attack on Titan isn't influenced by Western culture, but humanity and society as a whole. It's more focused on every individual's inner feelings, instead of Western culture.

Attack on Titan and Guilty Crown generated a lot of buzz before they aired. Do you feel like this is pressure to succeed? Do you prefer working on a popular series or would you rather work on something less well known with less stress?

I feel very strongly about creating anime that will be popular. I have pride in creating anime people will enjoy. I don't want any of my works to be low-key or minor, so of course I want every anime I make to be popular. I let the creative staff come up with their own ideas of what will be really popular and go from there.

How do you feel Attack on Titan compares to the majority of modern anime?

I feel the main difference is the overall action theme. I think the series has the best action scenes overall with the unique 3D maneuver gear. In terms of action, Attack on Titan is more unique, more robust, and more appealing to fans than any other anime out there.

Are their plans to extend the Attack on Titan beyond 26 episodes? The manga is still ongoing.

I can't tell you how many episodes there are until the end, but there is roughly 26, maybe? But as long as the manga continues to go on, I would like to continue to anime series too.

Is there a character in the series that you find most inspiring?

:siren: I like Sasha best, the potato girl. :siren:

How does working with a brand-new studio change the production dynamic compared to larger, more established studio?

Wit Studio allows myself and the staff to focus more on creating a single anime and put more effort into a single project compared to say, Production I.G where I would have a smaller staff and multiple projects. That's what I think the main difference is between the two.

Is there a genre of anime you would like to try next, such as sci-fi or fantasy?

I'm not really interested in categorizing into specific genres, but I want to create something for 10-14-year-old kids. I'd like to create something for that audience.

I was kind of disappointed that Annie didn't just go "gently caress it" and go straight for the king's residence. Does anyone know what the building that got smashed was? It looked pretty important.

Count me among those who won't read the manga after the first season is over. I've read some of the manga and I think the anime is the superior product in most aspects. Scenes like Eren's "death" or the appearance of the female titan wouldn't have had the same weight to them if I'd read the manga first. I have no issues with waiting.

There's no guarantee, whatever Annie's agenda is, that opposing the people who run the country is a particularly high priority. She was trying to kidnap Eren for whatever reason: if she just wanted to remove him as a potential weapon/source of knowledge, she could have killed him.

If they wanted to kill the king it couldn't be that hard. It's not like anyone(that we've seen) but the survey corps can really do anything to stop the female titan, much less if the armored or colossal titan was helping. I think either the royalty is either a complete non threat, or complacent in what they are doing.
