Yeah I started reading the manga about 5 episodes back and simply looked up where the anime was (forest, capture trap reveal) and it was a pretty smooth transition. People are saying there's some stuff that the anime doesn't show harking back to when Eren and the 104th were training so I'll probably go back and read it someday, but there wasn't anything they reference from training that I missed out on. People have posted comparison gifs/images all throughout this season of anime elsewhere to show how accurate the anime stays with the manga, so it makes reading the manga an easy transition. Like most manga adaption anime, the anime will always have time and room to add in additional fight scenes to pretty it up. It gives manga readers a boon to keep watching the anime even if they know what happens and AoT certainly delivered with this latest episode.

If you can handle it, I'd stick with the anime for at least the last episode. You only have to wait five days, and if 24 was anything to go by they're going to blow the budget on the finale.

Speaking of spoilers, one thing manga readers can accidentally do is confirm spoilers by yelling at speculators, either real or fake, that essentially confirms it. I'll give you an example from the One Piece anime thread: During a crazy arc where a bunch of big names show up in a war, someone essentially said, "Man, wouldn't it be crazy if even more warlords show up??" which is a perfectly fine thing to think, because One Piece is crazy like that. Except somebody immediately called that person out in the thread for "speculating". Forgetting the fact of whether it was genuine speculation or not, yelling at somebody in the thread about "speculating" pretty much confirms the spoiler in the first place. So if somebody rolls into the thread and says something like, "Man for the last episode I bet...." and calling them out will just ruin the surprise, because we'll know its true regardless of how valid the original speculation is or not.

The anime also hasn't animated chapter 18.5, which is my favourite chapter of the manga. It takes place before the female titan arc so everyone here should go and read it imo.

When I read the manga, it was just after Episode 22. I find the anime is a lot more linear. Things happen in chronological order more often in the show than in the manga. If you get what I mean. A lot of flashbacks. But since the anime is starting to catch up with the manga, it has started to do the same thing. You know what I mean? Wow, what a jumbled mess of thought that turned out to be.

You don't really miss a lot, otherwise. And holy poo poo, don't start at midnight because you're going to be up till 3AM finishing the remainder of the manga. And then you're going to be so bewildered you won't be able to sleep. It also means that until your friends catch up and read the manga you won't be able to talk about it anymore at all because even though tons of things are still unanswered there is enough you'll know that makes trying to participate in speculation a dangerous thing. Yeah, but it also sucks because I speculated about all kinds of poo poo here and now I can't because I've looked too deep. Speculating about things is half the fun. And the manga moves way slower than the anime because it's a monthly. So, I guess that's something else to keep in mind if you dive into the anime... basically this thread becomes look-but-don't-touch and consider whether you want that or not.

I'm leaning toward going ahead and reading the Manga once the anime ends for the sole purpose of inoculating myself from spoilers. I just don't trust the internet enough; all it takes is one rear end in a top hat to randomly post "HURF DURF EREN DIES OF CANCER." Since I feel pretty good about a second season happening down the road, normally I'd wait, but not for something this popular. I had GoT spoiled by what I thought was an innocent link from Penny Arcade. I wouldn't be surprised if while reading news for some unrelated anime the bottom of the page or sidebar featured an article speculating on how the anime would handle The Part Where- and then welp, ruined. Or even an innocent mistake like clicking on a spoiler you thought was about the anime. I feel like I'm taking my chances waiting for the anime to finish as it is, you know? Also, I haven't kept track of names, and in a thread this long I'm not going back to check, so this is just a general vibe, but.. It seems like earlier, let's say the first 1-7 episodes, Manga readers were telling people NOT to read the Manga if they hadn't, because the anime was just handling the story so much better etc., whereas now I'm hearing the opposite for when the season (Emphasis on "season") ends. Because anime seasons are funky. It's all up to the rights holders to decide if and when they want another season. Could be a year until a new season, could be longer. Some shows can even go 3-4 years before a second season! Season two aired in 2009). poo poo is crazy. And it happens to really popular stuff too. See: How it took like 3 years for a 2nd season of Haruhi.

Imo the manga is better for everything but the action. So if you like it for the story/characters/crazy plot developments, start reading the manga immediately (ideally read the manga fully then watch the anime).

So, apparently there's a 3DS game coming out. I wonder if it'll come to the west. I wish Nintendo didn't region lock the 3DS. This may be a stupid question but, as I was looking for a translation of the Vogel im Käfig lyrics it came to me... why are these lyrics in German?! In fact why are so many of the lyrics, not only of this particular anime, in German? More generally speaking why are most characters names, their look, the architecture, etc European inspired? Seems to me that the creators of these things would want their (generally young) audience to easily identify with the characters, in that light it makes no sense for everything to be seemingly eurocentric given that msot of their audience is asian. What gives? Is it just that I haven't seen much anime? While that is true when I think about it it looks like most anime is eurocentric in names/looks at least. Does it have something to do with post war laws like the pixels in porn? Sorry for the derail but once I started to think about it it's been eating me up. Can it be a coincidence and the artists just do it for "aesthetic reasons"? I could buy that for some, but for most? Is there even an equivalent in the west of a certain type of media portraying it's characters as being from another race? I can't come up with anything.

I believe you're overthinking things, the way I see it, whenever they want a fantasy setting, they usually go with european elements because that's exotic enough for them and there's plenty of material to get inspiration from. You could say they overuse the european setting the same way we overuse the tolkien or sci-fi settings in western media when we do fantasy stories.

Germany and Japan were Axis buddies, but I'm certain that Attack on Titan doesn't have a pseudo-German setting because of bizarre obscenity laws in Japan. And it's not as much the "creators" making the setting German, but Isayama Hajime, the creator of the manga. Why exactly he chose to set the series in a pseudo-German/European setting is a mystery. Maybe the landmass depicted in the series wouldn't fit in Japan in this possibly post-apocalyptic Earth, maybe having a Japanese setting would really bring in some awful implications regarding the possible fascist subtext (Pixis being modelled after a Japanese war criminal was controversial enough in China and Korea), who knows. And characters in anime don't really look white; they're cartoons, and so simplified that they usually lack clear or overt "racial" features. This isn't always the case, though; Naoki Urasawa is a manga artist whose Japanese characters look Japanese (just see 20th Century Boys for this). I feel like enough people are getting mixed up on this that it should be stressed: while there's tons of people working on making the manga into the brilliant adaptation it is and they're adding in some excellent filler, the entire story, the characters, and the setting were developed and written by one dude. There's no big writing team behind AoT, the entire show came out of one guy's head (and probably an editor or two somewhere along the line v  v).

How many western produced movies/shows with asian protagonists, an asian setting and soundtrack with asian lyrics have you seen? I was just curious as to how such a thing came to be so much more common than in western media. There are no such laws against pro-militaristic depictions of Japan. What on earth are you talking about? Japan loves using pseudo-medieval european depictions for fantasy, it's hardly novel. And they just can't help but end up with their own culture as a baseline, what with people sitting kneeling-style while eating with knives and forks.

While we're on the topic of race in AoT (I can't believe we even are), it was explicitly stated that Mikasa and her mother are the last of the "Orient" race. Or at least. Part of the endangered race. I think it's safe to say that 90% of the characters are actually white. Can we stop with the history lessons now?
