morestuff posted:

I just watched Witness for the Prosecution, and it's a great courtroom drama. Typically wonderful direction from Billy Wilder, Charles Laughton is great in the lead role, and the ending is perfect.

Yeah this is a fun one. The puzzlebox mystery of Agatha Christie augmented with Wilder's writing (and Laughton's and Deitrich's and Powers' acting) is great. Also the spoiler warning at the end.

It's the first of October! Meaning we have a month to watch as many horror movies as possible. What's better, Netflix does a decent attempt at adding to their horror library to get in the spirit. So I thought I'd make a post about all the entertaining Halloween movies, horror movies, and some B-movies that I've found.

Family
ParaNorman: Stop-motion animation, similar to Coraline--a horror movie for kids. Goons love it.
Scooby-Doo!: Mystery Incorperated: A continuation from Scooby-Doo Where Are You with great character development and a continuous plot. Highly recommended!
Mad Monster Party: Stop motion animation like Rudolph and other Christmas specials, but Halloween!
Goosebumps An horror version of The Twilight Zone for kids based off of the book series.

Horror
Evil Dead
": A classic adventure into the grotesque made by a group of college kids. Directed by Sam Raimi, edited by Joel Coen.
Pet Semetary: Based off of a Stephen King novel; 'What's the worst that could happen if you could bring a loved one back from the dead?'
Grave Encounters: Found footage film that parodies Ghost Hunters, Paranormal State, and Ghost Adventures. A Goon favorite.
The Innkeepers: A Ti West film, another Goon favorite; 'Well, if you can't watch House of the Devil, watch this!'
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark: Produced by Guillermo del Toro; An R-rated episode of Goosebumps.
The Faculty: Directed by Robert Rodriguez. Something about aliens and high school.
The Hole (2009): Some kids find a hole to Their Worst Nightmares in their basement. Fun ensues!
Red State: Kevin Smith makes a violent gritty horror film about Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church!
Ju-on: The Grudge: Classic Japanese haunted house (sans Sarah Michelle Gellar)
Scream: Wes Craven; kind of a horror, kind of a comedy, total deconstruction of the slasher genre
SLiTHER: James Gunn's first breakout directorial debut! Alien slugs make a small-town into slimy zombies! HILARIOUS, GORY, FUN! A Goon favorite!
Chop: Some poo poo that was recommended on the forums a while ago. (I haven't watched it)
V/H/S: A horror anthology based around found-footage movies. A goon favorite (though no one can agree why). Give it a try!
The Bleeding House: A weird salesman wants to teach a family some weird values (through murder).
Pulse (2001): Japanese ghost movie that shows electronics are evil (and will kill you inadvertently).
Session 9: A psychological horror movie that takes place in an asylum. Very moody and creepy. A Goon favorite!
Human Centipede: Pretty funny shock gore-porn horror (if you're a hosed up person). The sequel is also available and highly recommended (if you want to hate yourself as a human being afterwords)
Event Horizon: Sci-Fi Horror, and a classic! A group of people on a salvage mission board a spaceship that holds a hosed up secret. "I want to watch a movie like Dead Space!" Well, this is for you!
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight: (I've never seen it, but the show is great, so it's probably worth checking out!)

Classics (You probably know what they're about. If not, go in blind.)
Rosemary's Baby
A woman might have been raped by Satan. Tune in and find out!
Carrie: Psychic girl has a bad prom experience.
I Spit on Your Grave (1978): Lots and lots of rape. Violent rape. Though, actually very interesting (besides the rape) if you consider unreliable narrative and 'Am I watching what happened, or am I watching what's being imagined by characters?' type logic. (It will make you feel like poo poo after watching it.)
The Serpent and the Rainbow: Wes Craven. Supposed to be good. (Never seen it.)
The Hills Have Eyes 2 (1984): Wes Craven. Supposed to be good, but not as good as the original. (Never seen it.)
Nosferatu (1929): The original vampire movie. Actually still visually enticing and creepy as gently caress.
House on Haunted Hill (1959): Vincent Price in a haunted house!
Hellraiser: Clive Barker directed. Demons will gently caress you up (if you like puzzles).
Black Sunday: Horror anthology. It's fun.

Documentaries
Best Worst Movie
: A must-watch about Troll 2. Seriously, loving watch this poo poo. It's amazing.
The American Scream: A group of families in a small town make their own haunted houses. Same director as Best Worst Movie. MUST WATCH to get into the Halloween spirit.
Nightmares in Red, White and Blue: The evolution of horror movies in America, their subtext, and why they have lasting importance. Very very good.
Machete Maidens Unleashed!: Insight into the making of classic grindhouse films (worth it alone for the sections on Apocalypse Now!).
Room 237: About the different theories for Kubrick's The Shining.

Comedies
Ghostbusters
: Really? Dudes catch ghosts. It's amazing. Just loving watch it. drat.
Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn: The SEQUEL (and yes, it's a loving sequel. It continues the story, rear end in a top hat) to the original. Trippier and funnier. Commonly described as 'The Looney Tunes loving the Three Stooges on Acid in your nightmares'. It's really great, watch it.
Monkeybone: Brendan Frazer, Chris Kattan, Whoopi Goldberg as Satan. Directed by Henry Selick of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline fame. Has a cult following, and it's fun, but not great.
The Cabin in the Woods: A great deconstruction of the horror genre. A goon favorite, though heavily debated. More funny that scary, but has it's unsettling moments (I'm gonna just go make out with a wolf head).
Elvira, Mistress of the Dark: A pop culture icon of horror. I've never seen this movie. But I knew this girl once, that dressed up as her. So, the movie's probably worth it for that.
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil: In the 80's, there was this big fad of evil hillbilly horror movies. This movie takes that idea, and makes it loving hilarious. A goon favorite. I have never met a person that hates this movie. Watch it.
The Frighteners: Peter Jackson after he started taking himself a little more serious. Very funny, interesting movie. Check it out!
Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The title gives it away, drat it. Very little guess work.
House (1986): An Vietnam vet author moves into a haunted house to write a memoir or something. poo poo gets weird.
Scary Movie: A very iconic parody film of it's time. Good for nostalgia, or just dumb humor.
Tremors 2: Aftershocks: A decent sequel to an amazing movie. "You mean they've been acting so smart because they're so stupid?"
Severence: Not just another comedy slasher film. It's British comedy, and they come up with some pretty funny poo poo. Similar to Broken Lizard's Club Dread.
Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead: It's a Troma movie. I'm not going into more detail than that.

Universal Horror Movies (I'm not explaining this poo poo. Just watch them. They're all really loving good, no joke.
The Mummy (1932)
The Wolf Man (1941)
Dracula (1931)
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
The Invisible Man (1933)

B Movies
C.H.U.D.
: Monsters are in the sewers, and no one will listen! Guess a photographer will save the day!
Troll 2: When it comes to terrible movies, this one is the most watchable of the lot. It's in my top three favorite films of all time, just because I could watch it every day on a deserted island and never grow bored.
Ghoulies: Gremlins rip-off.
Pumpkinhead: Never seen it. But it's still a classic.
Flesh for Frankenstein: Frankenstein with sex thanks to Andy Warhol.
Blood for Dracula: Dracula with MORE sex thanks to Andy Warhol.
The People Under the Stairs: Wes Craven directed this movie. It's weird as poo poo, but it's so drat watchable. Just go in blind.
Pirhana: A Joe Danted rip-off of Jaws. A classic!
The Toxic Avenger: Troma's infamous building block. Go in blind.
Re-Animator: Campy H.P. Lovecraft directed by gore-hound Stuart Gordon, starring cult icon Jeffry Combs. Go in blind.
The Devil's Rock: Something about Nazis, Kiwis, and the Devil
The Stuff: Hilarious purposeful b-movie. There really isn't much to say, other than watch this weird poo poo.
Bay of Blood: An edited Mario Bava flick. The inspiration to Friday the 13th, and a really good movie until the ending.
Satan's Little Helper: A kid desensitized by his video games helps a serial killer slaughter people on Halloween. It's terrible, it really is, but it's somehow...Watchable? Give it a try if you want something new and weird.
Girls Gone Dead: A slasher flick that is borderline soft core porn, but actually really entertaining. (The quality is low, but it has such charm!)
Surf Nazis Must Die: Classic Troma, and a goon favorite!
Munchie: Rodger Corman hates you.
Ghost Cat: There was a SA article recently, I thought I'd add it for posterity.

Adult Animation
The Haunted World of El Superbeasto: Rob Zombie's mastubatory project. The animation and art's good, but it's not great. If you like monsters and tits (which you do), it's fun.

Action
Dead Heat
: A buddy cop movie with zombies and monsters. loving ridiculous. Chug a bunch of beers and watch with some friends.

Hammer Films
Frankenstein and Monster from Hell
: I haven't actually watched it, but I love Hammer films, so it has to have some redeeming value.

Miscellaneous
Mad Ron's Prevues from Hell: Previews for Grindhouse films. Fun brain candy.

Television
MST3k: Pod People
MST3k: The Touch of Satan
MST3k: The Final Sacrifice
MST3k: Soultaker
Doctor Who: episode "Blink"

I tried to make the list as extensive as possible.

Unrelated to Halloween, Fargo was recently added. If you've never seen it, watch it immediately! It's one of my all-time favorite movies.

(Edited to add movies)

Not that I don't appreciate the attempt to get the ball rolling on Halloween horror recommendations, but maybe that list would be better served with a sentence or two about each movie. Or, if that seems too daunting, just breaking the list up into a few headings; Comedy, Slasher, Psychological, For Kids, etc. It's hard to find something you might like when Evil Dead sits one place below Scooby Doo.

For what it's worth, I'll vouch for your inclusion of the Doctor Who episode "Blink." It's one of the finest episodes of the series and also works very well as a standalone story. All you really need to know is that the Doctor is an immortal alien with a time machine and he travels with a human companion. This particular episode also stars Carey Mulligan, who most of you probably remember as the cute blonde woman from Drive. Just a really well-crafted piece of sci-fi, a great horror-mystery that unfolds itself across two separate eras and has a fantastic stalking baddie bound by an interesting set of rules.

I wouldn't say that it's terrifying, mind you, but it's tense enough. Give it a watch. Forty minutes well-spent.

Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

I didn't realize that they had the Universal horror films up. Dracula is surprisingly effective but you have to remember that it's an adaptation of a play rather than a novel. I'll have to watch The Mummy sometime soon since I still haven't seen that.

For other options, I noticed while checking for Hammer horror films on Netflix (there's a couple, but not their stronger films) that they have the Andy Warhol produced Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula. Those films have a divisive reputation so I'm looking forward to checking them out.

I went into Room 237 expecting a feature length SMG post and I definitely got that, but the presentation was so flat that it left me cold. The best bits of the film was illustrating some of the unique features of the film; it's one thing to talk about the unnatural geography of the Overlook, it's another to have it carefully demonstrated for you. Using overlapping film images provided interesting visuals, but I saw it more as a display of shot composition than any deeper meaning.

That's what went wrong with Room 237. It was people telling me the deeper meaning that they had impressed upon the film as fact rather than trying to present arguments. They started from conclusions and warped the movie to fit those. I suppose Room 237 could be seen as indictment of that kind of art criticism, but the documentary doesn't seem to present the concept that way. I would have liked a round table of these varied theories and having them debate each other. As it stands Room 237 plays more as a group of sermons than a discussion.
