The derail caused by this artist's digitally manipulated images is really funny considering the intent of most of her work, especially the following series: quote:The series Absent is based on three famous hoax pictures. The first image derives from Elsie Wright’s 1917 photograph of fairies; the second image is based on the 'surgeon's picture' of the Loch ness monster taken by in 1934; the third image derives from a still from the alleged Roswell alien autopsy footage that was circulated in 1995. All photographs have subsequently been revealed as hoaxes.

http://www.kevinmertens.de/works/hurtland/ NSFW for random boobs and dongs. Welcome to HURTLAND. All I really knew when I started this project was that I wanted to photograph in my father’s town of birth. For years I had thought about documenting life in Iowa. I flew over, got a rental car and started driving around. This place, where I had been so many times since my childhood, felt different now while looking through a viewfinder. Weeks passed by and I just couldn’t quite find the story that I had originally imagined. It seemed like I first had to re-discover the reality of the area. As if, what I had in my mind were images of my desire that didn’t reflect the actual situation. I asked myself how it could be that in past visits I hadn’t noticed all the worn-down houses, the empty stores, the exhausted looking people. An analog camera forces you to focus.

I searched the last three pages and didn't find him, so here - have some Michael Wolf. His Hong Kong cityscape pictures are especially awesome in how they dissolve into abstract patterns and colors. I also like how he plays with the subject of photography with Google street view and others. The only downside I can find is that he also took photos of destitute people, which is a big no in my book. Anyway website here: http://photomichaelwolf.com/

Nick Brandt's new pictures and book are out. http://www.nickbrandt.com/portfolio.cfm?nK=16811&nS=0&nL=1 They even have his pics up on huff post so some of you might have seen it around the web already. I still like his pictures but I have The End of the Game by Peter Beard and I thought that format for this type of thing was a lot better. The historical approach was great even though he completely torpedoed it at the end with a badly supported hypothesis. But it was nice to have something more than the animals are dying ain't that a shame setup.

Santa is strapped posted:Photos by Richard Learoyd. Saw his work in an exhibition on contemporary portraiture, it was pretty amazing. The same exhibit introduced me to Laura McPhee, who recently had an exhibit in my city. She spent several years in Idaho, documenting the american west in large format--it was really something to see these 6' x 8' photos in person.

No pics to post, but I got to see a gallery of Annie Liebovitz's Pilgramage today and it was really great in person. I've never seen her portraits outside of magazines but this body of work was really solid and brought the stories to life in person. The prints themselves were a little disappointing, surprisingly. Don't know if it was the paper or ink or what, but the image quality is better in the book. All in all, definitely worth the $5 admission. Also, apparently she was at the opening and invited local college students to bring their work for her to see and critique, which is really great of her. You rarely see that from someone of her stature.
