Be aware that Origins is different from the subsequent versions (GBA, PSP, iOS, etc.). I would say that it's superior, because instead of rebalancing the entire game and switching out spell charges for MP, it just fixes the spells and stats that did nothing (in addition to the obvious case of new graphics, audio, and translation - the audio fidelity of Origins is the highest among the remakes as well) while leaving the content basically the same. So it's more of a challenge this way.

Does it make the elemental weapon do extra damage against creatures weak to them? That's what always pissed me off in the first game. My flame sword should gently caress up ice wolves, dammit.

I think the peninsula of power is included in all the versions, since it's so good for power levelling. It's a part of the world map that overlaps with the encounter region for an area you're meant to visit much later in the game.

Final Fantasy 13-2 is way more fun than 13 was. Sure, the story is kind of dumb, everyone dresses like an idiot, the dialogue (especially Lightening's) is pretentious, Moogle is really annoying, the music can get pretty weird/out of place and the two main characters aren't that interesting, but it's still better than 13. I love the monster collecting stuff, how there's more freedom and there's only one annoying character in the party. At least no one makes orgasm noises while they fight like Vanille did.

Snow is still as annoying as ever and looks even stupider this time, (why is he wearing a lacy red tank top) but good thing he's only in the party for a little bit. His lack of common sense and constant talk about heroes really gets on my nerves.

The midi music rendered through some Yamaha synth, sounds a lot better: http://steamcommunity.com/app/39140/discussions/0/846958001174056487/

I think you just need to replace the music folder with those to install.

For graphics, I don't think there's any easy-to-install mods, so I just ended up using a sweetfx preset with scanlines to make the backgrounds blend better: http://steamcommunity.com/app/39140/discussions/0/846959179174992745/

It looks a lot better to me, but I guess it's a bit fake-retro.

Related to FF7 Steam...

I've been playing for about 10 hours now, and I've run into a bug that's preventing me from recruiting Yuffie. I'm able to encounter her in forests and all, the problem comes up in the scene after you beat her. I can take the first dialogue box with her, but when I do and she does her whole 'prepare to fight me again' bit, I can't move Cloud at all... Which in turn prevents me from initiating the rest of the dialogue with her. At that point, I've had to resort to entering the menu in order to get out. I've tried anything that immediately comes to mind, like switching my keybindings for my movement keys, but nothing seems to be working.

Would anyone happen to know how to get around this, or am I stuck without one of the best sidequests and PCs?

I started 13-2 a few days ago, and it's more than a little frustrating that it deliberately invalidates the ending of the first. Yeah I know they did it on purpose, but I just don't know why they would want to. It just seems like extra work and is only serving to annoy at this point. I also really don't like games with time travel as a major mechanic (i.e. multiple endings/branches/outcomes/etc; then again I enjoyed Chrono Trigger and Radiant Historia so maybe I'm just a hypocrite), and don't really like crafting systems. I think crafting systems would actually be my number one complaint about both 8, 12 and 13.

But actually playing it is actually really fun. I'm only on chapter 3 but I took a peek at the Sazh DLC, groaned because of the casino aspect, but ended up having fun with that too. Maps are at least better than corridors, finding secrets is always nice, getting preemptive strikes is way easier, and some other little details. I'm enjoying it more than I should, but I have some questions, sorry!

There's only one real main ending, right? This isn't some Chrono Trigger thing?
When is a good time to do the Lightning or Snow stories? Like I said, I already did the Sazh one. I imagine that the coliseum monsters are some post-game fare but was wondering about those scenarios.
How much is the whole closing/opening gates to replay scenarios going to come into play? Hopefully just for some random fragments...
Monsters... The most recent boss fight against the Gogmagog reskin was tense, even though I had pretty good levels for the time. I'm hoping there are a few relatively-easily-tamed monsters that will carry a team for most of the game, but if not, then I'll just have to deal with that.

I also picked up War of the Lions, as I have never played Tactics, and maybe it was a mistake, because I suck really, really bad at strategy games and everything seems really confusing. I lost during my first attempt of the very first battle where you can control your own party. I won the second time, but still, that doesn't really bode well, does it. Hopefully if I follow a guide to the letter I'll make it through.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: sometimes passing just isn't an option.
Just remember that elevation and positioning overall matter a lot - don't let enemies out flank you. Always look at the turn order to figure out when enemies get to act - this is really important starting mid-late when spells and some abilities take several turns to execute and if you don't plan well, enemies can move out of range of your spells or just kill the caster.

One main ending, and... twelve, I think?... bad endings that unlock the ability to get later. One of those is head and shoulders above the actual ending and easily the best thing Snow has ever been involved with.

Closing and opening doesn't come up much, but does tie into getting those bad endings and yeah, a few fragments. The time travel gimmicks aren't so bad.

The best Commando monster in the game doesn't even have to be tamed (Chichu!) and aside from specifically picking up a Cryohedron, or maybe the palette swap of it, to have a good Ravager, I didn't spend a lot of time taming anything but Chocobos.

You can do Lightning's DLC at any time. You might as well finish it, since it's short and you get an alright monster from the whole affair (it will be replaced later in the game, but eh)

Grinding is an especially significant part of Tactics, given how difficult some of the later battles can be. Don't be discouraged with any initial problems getting used to it, you're having to consider a lot more than usual for this series.

And be prepared for some balls to the walls battles, like the soon-to-come one in Dorter. FFT does not pull any punches on you after the introductory battles. Still, if you can get past that, I've found it to be one of the funnest entries in the entire series. :)

Definitely do this. Some missions are multi-part; if you get a prompt to save after the mission then do it in a separate slot than the one right before the mission.

Especially since those're pretty much agreed upon being some of the toughest missions in the game, and you can't back out of it to get more experience with your PCs once it's started.

FFXII had a bit of that, but I don't think it was really considered a success. And even though the problems with XII had nothing to do with trying to tell a more mature story it does seem that's the lesson Square decided to take from it given the direction XIII went. Or maybe it just feels like that because of how stupidly spread the Fabulous Crystals thing is, the series has drastically changed its tone multiple times before. I don't think the people behind the Ivalice series really work at Square anymore though?

By the by, Elec, always make backup saves in FFT. Probably don't want to run into a death loop at Riovanes Castle, after all. After the second battle in the game you can start running into random battles in green dots if you're having difficulty with things. No shame in doing this, Dorter Trade City (not spoilering this, it's practically FFT's newbie hazing ritual) is a kick in the balls for new players, and is one of the hardest battles in the game largely because you're probably not prepared and don't really know what you're doing.

Dr Pepper posted:

Grinding in FFT also has the effect of making random battles scale to your level, even while story battles and shop inventories remain static. Being level 40 before ever touching Igros Castle made Dorter a cakewalk, but every single random encounter was a nailbiting, Yell-spamming race against death. It was actually a lot of fun, come to think of it. I would probably do it again if it didn't require spending hours Yelling at my troops while being harassed by Chocobos, Thieves, and Goblins. And was also a job for a crazy person.

But yes, if someone's got a good head for tactics, can figure out the skill system, and an appreciation for the CT initiative system, one should probably be able to get by without much grinding. The game is pretty easy once you know how to break it. Grinding isn't a requirement for the experienced player by any means.

You really don't need to grind in Tactics if you know how the game mechanics work and are intelligent with how you move your players across the field, but a new player is probably going to need to grind like crazy to make it through some of the tougher fights.

Even in NIS games however, you don't need to grind to finish the game and the vast chunk of post-game content. Intelligent use of the options given to you is more effective than ramming your head until your numbers get bigger. You can finish areas at a waaaaaaaaay lower level than you'd expect if you're smart about what you use instead of going "time to smash my face against enemies until my level is infinite."

The last time a new platform got such heavy support, the message was clear; buy the DS if you want Dragon Quest 9. While I don't think they'll abandon the 3DS, I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing cross-platform entries on smart phones.

If you're curious about the portrait orientation, it's the preferred way of playing by Japanese phone users.
