It's a pretty vague definition. BJCP actually uses the term "lawnmower beer." I've always heard that maize/corn as an adjunct is a primary defining quality.

Well, yeah. I know that they need plenty of beer to promote the brand and do their job, but a lot of other departments take whatever they want for personal use, too. And I'm well aware that the personal use stuff factors in to promoting the brand, but that applies to everybody in the company. I give at least half of my allotment away to family and friends, who tend to talk up what I do and who I work for. Not that everybody should get a pallet of BCS Rare, but a little bit wouldn't hurt, and it'd help promote the company and the brand even more.

like every employee gets a set of the whole BCBS lineup or something? seems weird that they would be so tightfisted but at the same time completely neglect to find out what happens with the "marketing bottles." obviously not every rep is doing that, but if you're not going to use them as thank-yous or incentives for big accounts, at least crack 'em at bottle shares.

yeah, it's the amount of adjunct; otherwise, the style doesn't have the most narrow of definitions.

I'm all over the board when it comes to this topic but... Could this be another example of rarity/hype pushing a beer rating higher? If it wasn't a Founders Backstage release- if Joe's Beer Company brewed the exact same thing- do you think it would fair so well? I'm not too certain.

Personally, I thought it was entirely mediocre and not much better than most "shelf" barley wines. By the time I finished the bottle (by myself, which was dumb...) I was kind of hatin' it.

Different strokes for different folks. I thought Bolt Cutter was fantastic when I had it in June at a Founders event. I even rated it higher than KBS on Untappd. I had Frangelic at that same event and didn't think it was bad either. I didn't think it was great, but I'm looking forward to opening my bottle this winter to see how it's progressed.

Then again I may not be the best judge of "good beer" since I love big boozy beers, huge overpowering oak flavors, and anything that tastes like it was aged on old leather jackets.

Considering Bolt Cutter is a running joke over at BA/RB, I imagine there's a different segment of beer drinkers who post on the forums vs. rating a beer. I would agree that the Founders name (just like other big name breweries) plays a part in how people are rating a beer, but I don't think it would be rated terribly if it didn't have the Founders name.

Some beers just aren't for everybody. Lots of people have been making GBS threads on Founders for the past few Backstage releases but lots of people also like boozy high ABV beers, hazelnut coffee, fruit beers with chili peppers, and barrel aged IPAs.

I'm in Philly but we were just in Lancaster a few weeks ago. You should hit up Lancaster Brewing Company if you get a chance. Not a huge fan of their regular lineup, but I like their seasonals. Shoo Fly Pie Porter is on tap now. Quite nice if you like shoo fly pie since it emulates the flavor pretty well without being sweet. Also their Baked Pumpkin Ale is as good as Pumking in my opinion. It's less sweet with just enough spice. It tastes more like a pumpkin pie than most I've had.

Every beer is either the most amazing mouth orgasm the person has ever had or it's a drain-pour that kicked their dog and called their mother a bad name. There is no middle ground.

Like people calling something like Blue Moon or Boston Lager the worst beer they have ever had. Really? If that is the worst you've ever had, you live a charmed life. Drank my bottle of Great Divide's 19th Anniversary ale last night that's been sitting in my fridge for a while, and goddamn I wish I'd bought more of it when it was on the shelf here! I thought the birch syrup sounded like it could be nasty, but it was a great addition to the beer. My grandpa used to keep old fashioned candy around, like horehound drops, and it reminded me of eating some of those while drinking an old ale. Not too sweet or too strong to get tired of, I loved the entire bottle. Going to have to try the local bottle shops and see if any of them have some of it left.

Yeah, I think that the culture exists only so much as you participate in it. There are people who want to inflate their self-worth by chasing rares and dispensing polarized judgement on beers. I am beer-omniscient because I've had everything important and now let me take a step further to apotheosis by damning or exalting whatever it is I am drinking. It's playground psychology at work among insecure manchildren.

I personally just drink beer to enjoy it at this point. If people recommend or generally like a beer, I will grab it if I can and I don't care if I can't. I drink beer from whatever brewery is closest to me when I have a thirst. I grab rares off the shelf if they happen to be there and I can afford it. I pay attention to local beer news so I can do cool local beer things. I read this thread and I have a good feel for what's popular and happening across the country. It's a fun hobby in balance with everything else in my life.

There are some posters in this thread whom I genuinely envy for having the time and money to consistently be drinking pretty much the entire breadth of super tasty, super hyped beers. That is not me right now. I don't let it get me down and frankly, for not trying all that hard (I read two blogs and this thread) I still have gotten to try a fair amount of rare or highly regarded beers and that makes me happy, not only for ticking something off, but for having had great beer.

I dunno man, sometimes you just have to step back and look at what is actually driving the bad part of the beer community.

Also I use Untappd now to keep track of what I drink. Could not care less about the badges, most of them are super boring. You drank five IPAs! You are drinking with 10 other Untappd users at this restaurant! Woo! It's really just a convenient, simple beer journal. If you are spending real life money to buy beer, no matter how good, to get an Untappd badge, you have really fallen off the deep end.

Having said that, it's unfortunate that I don't get excited about common styles like your typical Lager, Pilsner, Brown Ale, or Red Ale anymore. I love trying new beers but there's just so many breweries opening and I only make the effort if one of their offerings is unique.

Untappd to me is just a quick way to keep track of the beers I've tried. Many times at a tasting or festival, I don't have enough time to take expensive notes, or even remember what I've tried. Untappd is a quick way to mark off beers and record a quick impression of it.

There have been countless times where I've gone to check in "new" beer and found out I did taste it at an event a year ago.

Just like any hobby, there is a competitive aspect in craft beer. Everybody wants to think they are doing it "better", whether that is chasing after .rar walez, or drinking hyper local, or obsessively ticking. Passion usually leads to obsession.

I don't think that's really the dark side of beer culture though. I am all about the beer-cation, cool festivals, and even some trading (see BIF). I do pretty much as much of that as I can afford. I don't really do bottle shares mostly because I don't do the BA or RB thing where I could get hooked up with people that do and my current local friends don't do it either, but I don't think that's a bad thing either. I have a potential trip to San Diego this winter and if it pans out, there is a bottle share in the works there along with a couple of days of staggering from brewery to brewery.

Where beer culture chafes me is when it does become snobby and egocentric. Where hype dominates the product, instead of the products own merits, much like Freelance Socialist said. And where people want to be Beer Personalities and some become absolutely insufferable and dismissive of beer-plebs. It's basically when people want to make themselves Better Beer Nerds by chasing whales, which in itself isn't bad if you can afford it because it's all really just a matter of money, that beer culture sucks. The entitlement and hoarding and truck chasing all are symptoms of someone who has gone too far, and that's what disgusts me.

There are several posters in this thread that consistently drink amazing beer. I swear it sometimes seems that every other post mentions the Bruery Reserve Society, Catador, 3F, or Cantillion but nobody's a dick about it. We never hear, "well I had King Henry and BA Old Numbskull so your post about middling at best Bigfoot really doesn't hold water. Also please glory in my presence and prepare to receive my enlightened gifts of knowledge." That's where it goes bad and that's where I think a lot of people get disgusted with beer culture. That and hoarding, which is not cool.

Half of those guys were tick-obsessed Untappd monkeys, too. It was just that good.
