So how is the new Bard's Tale game? It seems like it has some decent humor and Tony Jay as a narrator is always a good time.

I bought it just for the original trilogy, to be honest.

I hated it at first, but it grew on me pretty quickly. The summons are pretty good, and the voice acting really goes a long way to selling the writing. It's actually pretty funny!

Hee-lo-ho!
New Bard's Tale has great music, fun dialogs and a lot of snark from Elwes and Tony Jay.
Hell it would be worth it just for the voice acting, the fact that it is playable (and has hilarious songs) makes it absolutely worth getting.

It's a giant deadly sea monster, it uses its tentacles to tear apart fleets of military ships. Just because it's anime style art and has tentacles doesn't mean the tentacles are going to be used for sex.

There's a demo of Long Live the Queen if you want to try it before you buy it. It reminds me of Princess Maker 2, a game I loved playing when I discovered it but could do without the creepiness and awkward RPG bullshit.

I also enjoyed The Bard's Tale remake when I played it. The Bard reminds of Ash in that he's a bad rear end character (voiced by Cary Elwes!) but a total goof off who fucks everything up and gets kicked in the nuts as many times as he does something right. I was expecting a fairly standard Diablo-clone like the Dark Alliance games but it's actually closer to an adventure hybrid with some secret areas. It's a pretty challenging game, too. I found myself dying a few times.

There's also a group of minstrels who sing of your misadventures Brave Sir Robin style.

I definitely agree. When you think about it, King of Dragon Pass falls under the Japanese style of visual simulation games although we call it a strategy game here. I always liked this style of game but most of them just fall under that "anime as gently caress" generalization.

Bard's Tale is worth it for the three old games alone.

So is Corsairs Gold basically just a generic version of Sid Meier's Pirates! Gold?

You don't really play Bard's Tale for any riveting gameplay, as it's pretty much your bog-standard hack-n-slash, you play it for the funny dialog. People who enjoyed the Princess Bride would like this game.

If anyone wants some more detail of what we're talking about with Bard's Tale;

The game plays with the trope of there being a fateful hero who is meant to save the day. The Bard is "the chosen one" and tasked with a quest, but you keep running into OTHER "chosen ones" on your journey who were told the same thing. A kind of "throw a bunch of poo poo at the wall and see what sticks" kind of situation.

So these other guys keep dying, and the lowly goblin-type enemies come out and sing about how it sucks to be them and what was their undoing, kind of like the Oompa Loompas singing about how all those kids were assholes.

I would go through as a wizard. It's the hardest class but they get a bunch of cool powers and their game is more puzzle/environment oriented. Later you'll start fighting instant death monsters but you get a reversal spell that flips that poo poo around.

The wizard also seems to be the primary class because their story and ending make sense within the game's lore.

Sounds good. A wizard it shall be!

I second this. It's been far too long since I've lived off a diet of nothing but french fries, and spent the weekend inspecting my body underneath florescent lights.

I think I still have my original disc around here somewhere, but it's been tossed around through so many moves I doubt it's still in any kind of working order.

A decent late-era Sierra game! There was even a sequel too if I remember correctly.

The key ones they're missing are:

Manhunter 1+2
Gold Rush
Conquests series (Camelot / Longbow - PLEASE GOD LONGBOW)
Codename Iceman (which is a genuinely awful game but I'd buy it because :gogtears: )
Freddy Pharkus
The Dr Brain series
The Dynamix adventures (Willy Beamish, Heart of China, etc.)

I tweeted at them about what it would take to get these games on GOG but no reply.

They're missing of great Dynamix titles. They were one of my first favourite studios, before I got into Origin.

Off the top of my head:
  • Rise of the Dragon
  • Aces games
  • Stellar 7
  • Earthsiege/Starsiege/Tribes
  • Cyberstorm (different enough to not include above)

I have a feeling they're not forgotten. A bunch of their stuff has shown up, like Red Baron, and Incredible Machine. Might just be in the "todo" column.

Looks like the rights for Gold Rush went to the original developers, or at least a group calling themselves The Software Farm, who re-released the game in 2000(!) under the name "California Gold Rush". Their website suggests you can still buy it in a fancy wooden box, or for a budget option you can get it in an envelope, but considering they're asking for $20 for the cheap option for a game released in 1988 which is unplayable on modern systems, you'd really have to be on a nostalgia kick to get it. Plus, their website says "copyright 2000", so it's doubtful if they're still selling it.

Also, I guess they're not key, but let's not forget Laura Bow series (Colonel's Bequest / Dagger of Amon Ra). I really enjoyed DoAR back in the day. And EcoQuest 1 & 2 (hey, it's good for kids).

Gold Rush was so great. Difficult with too many Sierra quest ending moments, but a great and atmospheric game with three ways to get through it.
