What's exceptionally pathetic is that the Onion A/V Club writer who came up with the term "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" (which is a loving stupid term, incidentally) used Holly Golightly as one of his examples. Right actress, wrong character.

After hearing that Portal 2 was intentionally written to avoid spawning memes (after the first game spawned all of them) I have to wonder about how other creative types feel if/when they discover the depths of madness that their fans descend into. Especially if it's tropers thinking that the joke you came up with is the type of person to aspire to be and/or date.

I'd post some quotes, but I really don't want to.

quote:

Leina wets herself twice in the first episode of Queen's Blade. The second is a Bring My Brown Pants moment, but the first is this trope as she wets herself due to being strangled by Melona.
Huh, what's this "Queen's Blade" thing?

quote:

Originally a series of one-on-one combat gamebooks based on Lost Worlds. Lost Worlds let two players duel by exchanging books that represented different characters, with illustrations representing each action you could take. In 2005, Hobby Japan released a remake of the series, but instead of generic fantasy monsters, the characters of Queen's Blade were all women designed with a more ecchi slant. And thus the Fanservice began.

The story is as follows. Every four years, there is a tournament to decide who will be the next queen of the land. The rules are extremely simple: as long as the contestant is over twelve years old, the last one standing wins.
Oh, OK. Thanks, TV Tropes.

Wow. That's one darkly brilliant comic. Is there any more of it? If so, where can I find it?

I guess you could make a case that it's full of gallows humour. It's just that the humour serves to underscore the tragedy; it's a kind of despairing gasp at just how grotesque the family relationships have become. That would require nuance and a greater inters in human reality than list-making, though, so I guess LOL SO WRONG is all we're gonna get.

Yeah, I think I'd give the benefit of the doubt here and say that the troper who wrote that comment isn't actually guffawing at the abuse but is trying to highlight the artist's use of dark humor and just worded it poorly. There is humor there and the artist is juxtaposing it with the cold parts because that's a strength of a cartoon medium. It's like the opposite of a dark comedy, really. In a dark comedy the darkness just underscores the comedy, making the funny bits funnier by contrast. There's a whole lot of schadenfreude in there too. In this comic the little funny moments underscore and highlight the darkness. You laugh at something only to realize that you're laughing at a comic about an abused little girl, and that just makes it all the more tragic.

On the plus side, we're getting some appreciation in for works that handle sexual abuse well. Shall we add Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres to the list? Let's see...

quote:

Setting Update

Jane's Smiley's A Thousand Acres is King Lear ON A FARM IN IOWA! FROM GONERIL'S POV!

quote:

Perspective Flip

A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley is a reversal of King Lear, set on an Iowan farm and showing the story from Ginny's (Goneril's) perspective.

Deep, man. You'd think they'd invest a little more effort in a book they could add to their list of examples for that stupid 'Humans have ALWAYS SHARED STORIES, which means my Lestat/Spock hurt/comfort fic makes me EXACTLY LIKE JEAN RHYS' mantra.

Okay, so maybe that's asking a little much. How about Bryan Talbot's The Tale of One Bad Rat? It's about child sexual abuse, it's good, it's a comic. They like comics, right?

quote:

Out of interest, is there a legit literary term for what TvTropes calls "expy"/"no celebrities were harmed"? Obviously a story where the whole plot or theme is lifted from real life events is a roman a clef, but I want to know if there's a specific term for a single character based on a real person being put into an original situation. While I was revising for an exam on Restoration Comedy I wanted to have a handy word to use to explain that most of the rake characters are based on the earl of Rochester and the king, but didn't know any except for the dumb fake TVTropes ones. Obviously I didn't use them because that would have been retarded, but I really feel like there is some specific name for the phenomenon and google didn't help me find it.

I feel sorry for actual tropers though because they probably do this all the time (can't remember real literary terms because of browsing the site) and yet don't even see anything wrong with it.

The closest I can think of is "archetype". Which doesn't entirely fit.

Honestly I think the best way is to say that when someone uses the same characters over and over they're just "[best known example of the character type] with the serial numbers filed off".

You don't have to 8e a good person to 8e a hero.
Speaking of Analogue:

quote:

Personally speaking I have a large Willing Suspension Of Disbelief. It's why I can enjoy Widget Series. So when I started Analogue and played through it, I could accept the Days Of Future Past and things like that. I could accept the overwhelming cynicism. I could accept a lot of things. Objectively speaking, it is an improved version of Digital A Love Story due to it's more complex plot and characters.

It's just that it tries to portray itself as realistic and fails. Hard. The themes it portrays are so feministic and overblown that it feels like it was written like a Straw Feminist. Yes, I get that oppression of women is terrible. I don't need to be reminded over and over again by Melodrama and overwhelming amounts of Domestic Abuse caused by people who live in a backwards society. There's just so much outright hatred for men that it gets annoying.

I know that as I type, societies still oppress women. Probably to a worse degree than in this Visual Novel. I have seen poo poo and I am not naive. However, even a Broken Bird can show a genuine smile. When a person who sits high on their ivory tower looks down around them, they assume that everyone who lives down there must be miserable and pitiable. What they can't see are those very people finding simple joys in everyday life and genuinely smiling even as they wallow in poverty and oppression.

In short, it's Good, but it had a very bad aftertaste. I can see someone who can accept the themes liking this Visual Novel, but I think that it's stupidly cynical. Love It Or Hate It Up To Eleven.

Feminazi stole my ice-cream!

(Also, it's been observed that Christine Love significantly underplayed Joseon Era sexism).

The sad thing is that Analogue was written to demonstrate that those attitudes could easily crop up and take over again and that progress isn't as linear as people think.
