tooooooo bad posted:How is Kara no Shoujo? Recently read an interview with someone behind it and it sounds interesting. It's pretty good, but it has it's problems. The translation isn't perfect and getting the true end is time consuming since the game doesn't have a skip repeated scenes option, I think the game could be better if it was just a true end with a bunch of bad ends. That being said I didn't get EVERY ending, so I might've missed out on some really good ones.

LB! Refrain I don't know what to think. I guess I'm reforming the Little Busters and now the creepy music isn't the only thing that's unsettling me because I'm staring at a cafeteria full of Masatos. This I did not see coming. Let me ramble a bit. So I guess there's a magical wish granting machine or something? And it's spewing out new, sometimes broken worlds based on the wishes of the characters? Baffling, but "wishes" and "worlds" keep coming up so I'm just going to roll with it. Maybe it's all VR simulations or something, who knows. What's the point? At first I thought it might all be for the sake of "fixing" Rin, the way she was growing from one route to the next, but now I'm not so sure. Riki came up with the battle game and the baseball on his own this time. Did he take inspiration from Kyousuke or...could it be the other way around? Hmm. Kengo and Masato know what's going on. They know in the same way that Kyousuke knows. Did they always? The other girls mentioned their own wishes. Did they know too? Oh man. I really don't like the sound of "something" having happened to Rin. Kind of hoping that they leave it exactly that vague but I don't think that they will. Come on. Come on. WHAT WAS THE CHEAP TRICK????? Actually...I wonder. Was Kengo supposed to win in that iteration of the world? Did Kyousuke cause something to happen that shouldn't have? Hmmmmm. I'm sure I'm thinking way too much about everything. e: What the hell was up with the very first line in Refrain not being voiced by Masato like it was supposed to be? That happened, right? What the gently caress? e2: I checked. It did happen. What the gently caress? It sounded almost like Kyousuke but I'm not sure at all. Maybe a young Kyousuke? Finished LB! Refrain. This might be anticlimactic if you were waiting for me to finish because I don't have a lot to say. Sorry. "It's enough" was my first choice and I would have been satisfied with just it. Even so, I don't actually dislike the way the alternative played out. It's very saccharine sure, very convenient, but...I don't mind. They earned it, I think. Not really into making big long opinion posts so I'll just say: I liked Little Busters! a lot. A whole lot. The only other PC VNs I've played are Tsukihime, FSN, and Muv Luv so I don't have much to compare it to but...I would definitely put it up there with the three of those. It's emotionally exploitative and sometimes hilariously contrived _____________Kud_____________, but it's also full of great surprises and fun characters and just every so often manages to be very, very clever. Glad I played it. e: gonna miss this hot jam. see you tomorrow fucked around with this message at 02:45 on Oct 21, 2013 |

I think Little Busters! is pretty flawed, chiefly because there is such a disconnect thematically between the individual routes compared to the big picture you get at the end of Refrain. Yesssssss technically a few elements show their face in these routes but they don't stop making the routes feel any less tacked on. But that said, there are a couple of things that are pretty neat that one realizes after finishing Refrain: For one, they take the "Rin and Riki must get stronger" aspect quite literally. You may have noticed that Rin is able to defeat Sasasasasami at the beginning of the game eventually, as her stats go up with each completed route. Same with the baseball game, if you bothered to replay it. More than most games that I can think of there are a fair amount of changes to the common route itself depending upon which routes you've finished (specifically remembering a scene with meeting Mio via the foul ball), which is nice. I think all of this betrays a more ambitious approach that desperately needed better written side routes to complement it.

tooooooo bad posted:Finished LB! Refrain. Standard "after beating Refrain" checklist time: - If you have a save a little while before the start of Rin's second route, then you should load that save now and reread a scene from the very beginning of the arc. It's the one that has Riki and Kyousuke talking about old cats. Think about the Secret of the World, read between the lines, apply that knowledge to everything in the common and heroine routes, and you'll understand a lot more. - There's a second version of the epilogue scene in the classroom. Shortly before the "It's enough" choice, you'll find a new choice if you return after beating Refrain. Pick the one Riki didn't automatically choose the first time around. It's not a big thing, but it's a little more conclusive. - There's a new Komari scene in the common route on 5/21, if you're interested. ...drat, should have told you to try to access the routes you'd finished again before you finished Refrain. Can't see those again without starting over, and Riki's lines when you try to reenter Kurugaya's route are good ones. edit: Oh, and forgot: Kurugaya's route has a new ending now, if you revisit it. If you want more, you might as well give other Key things a shot. Clannad is widely regarded as the best, but it's an absolute labyrinth of choices and I know many people prefer the anime. I haven't played Kanon, Air, or Planetarian but they're also options. I think Planetarian is very well-liked but the other two are dated, now? I would actually save Rewrite, Key's latest thing, for at least after Clannad if you ever plan on watching/playing it. It's very much a departure from Key's usual fare, and a huge part of my enjoyment of it was from seeing the differences while still noticing the "Key touch", as it were. There's one other thing about it that makes me think you'd gain some extra appreciation from a specific two of the routes, but I can't really mention why without ruining that appreciation. Oh, and I might as well mention this. There's a "sequel" of sorts to Little Busters titled Kud Wafter, as a followup to the Kud route (major LB spoiler) if it had taken place in the real world; it's not translated but even if it were, don't try to play it. I really like LB too and I figured I'd try my hand at playing it to improve my Japanese skills, and that was a mistake, for a variety of reasons. One other thing about the game proper, though: go get the muscles ending if you haven't. Choose "Play with Masato" every single time it comes up; I think you need to be in Kud's route to get the last few instances of it. Then enjoy the magic.

The AIR anime was pretty bad at least. The worst thing KyoAni has ever done in my opinion. And I have trouble believing the VN corrects its problems, because the final act is still going to be Really Dumb. The Summer OVAs were pretty good, though. I'm not sure how I would feel if I revisited it now, but I remember enjoying Kanon 2006. It was the reason I gave CLANNAD a shot in the first place. Already have some idea of what Kud Wafter is so yeah no interest, and of course I did the muscle route. Watched a couple episodes of the LB! anime, it doesn't seem bad considering. Adapting things like this is really difficult. Funny that they even kept the super creepy anime cats from the VN. Soundtrack might be a little overpowering for an anime heh.

I just read True Remembrance, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed the premise, and how it was an exploration of how people deal with emotional pain, either their own, or other's. One of the 3 routes has both a normal and a true ending. You have to do all 3 to unlock the true, so make sure you don't miss that. I don't remember the game doing anything to even hint at the true ending existing.

What's the appeal of Clannad exactly? Is it one of those visual novels that gets really really good in the end and spends tons of time developing characters in the beginning? It just seemed like another high school romance visual novel, what makes it different from others? unpronounceable posted:I just read True Remembrance, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is just another high school romance novel, just a really good one. Some of the routes are meh, but most of them hit what they're shooting for pretty well. The After Story segment is noteworthy because its a continuation of a relationship after the point most visual novels cut off at, actually seeing some of the character's married lives rather than a quick epilogue that shows the characters have a kid together which is the most you usually get. Plus it hits as hard emotionally as anything else I've read.

One of the reasons why the anime adaptation of Clannad is superior is that a character as funny and well-built as Tomoya really needed to be voiced and have a face. Having the usual faceless voiceless everyman in the VN just didn't work.
