Mini-anthologies really need to become a thing. Trick 'r Treat is a god drat masterpiece. (So are Creepshow 1 and 2).

Devil would have been a good movie if it was 15-20 minutes long.

World War Z would have been amazeballs if it was an anthology like the book.

--------

Unrelated, my Halloween series viewing has reached it's finale, and I've finally made it to Halloween Resurrection (I started with Rob Zombie 1 and 2, and Carpenter 1, all of which I'd seen before. The other seven are all new to me this year).

I like how there are 5 okay/good movies, in the series (RZ1/2, original 1,2,H20) and the 5 shockingly bad ones are all painfully grating and stupid. And you can instantly tell if it's a bad one if it looks like a VHS recorded made-for-TV movie.

Halloween 3 may have an excuse for looking like garbage, given that it was 1982 and made for pennies, but in 2002 with a big budget, Resurrection should definitely not have that cheap rear end TV look to it. I can't wait for Busta Rhymes to show up. This is going to be loving terrible.

e: OMG so many corny sound effects.

e2: if you're gonna do jump scares, don't play the sting music, then the actor reacts, THEN we see the jump scare thing. It's 1-2-3, not 2-3-1.

Zing! I still haven't seen it, but I assume it was something like the South Park episode. I definitely only made it halfway through the book.

On another note I saw Atrocious recommended earlier in the thread and noticed it was on Netflix. That got pretty intense, I loved it. Reminded me a bit of [rec], which was the only other fully found footage type movie I ever watched. The similarity being me wanting to turn it off for the first 20 minutes, then start getting interested and not really minding the shaky camera style. Then finally a crazy last bit that somehow manages to really get my adrenaline/fear gland pumping.

Is that sort of par for the course? I tried watching Paranormal activity and turned it off after about a half hour and am now questioning that decision.

Paranormal Activity is a great movie if you wanna see a ouija board catch fire and a girl make a dumb face at a camera, padded out with 90 minutes of an annoying couple being boring.

Audiences were thrilled when BroDouche McJagerbombs said "babe" a lot as his girlfriend brushed her teeth in real time.

I honestly can't think of a movie worse than Paranormal Activity, and I've seen two Misty Mundae softcore porns and one of those Steve Odekirk thumb movies.

Both are from Spain too! I loved Rec, though I also think found footage is nicer in your native language so you can really pay attention to everything and actually hear all that's said instead of reading a simplified version of it.

V/H/S is an excellent found footage film; the anthology format allows it to do without much exposition, if you'd prefer something with a quicker pace. I watched the sequel pretty drunk but I liked it too, just not as much (judging by reviews, people preferred 2). It's a while since I've seen it, but I actually felt like Paranormal Activity moved faster than Atrocious, in terms of when things actually started to happen. (I liked both though)

And I think that one is from Child's Play 2 when he tried to kill Andy's curmudgeon of a teacher.

My strongest memory of Child's Play is how in the second one Chucky gets Andy Barkley's contact information over the phone by posing as his uncle Charles.

The heart attack thing was the third movie. Second one had Chucky killing the teacher with a bicycle pump, which is really right up there with the Leprechaun pogo stick in sheer "What the gently caress".

I'm with you. Actually, I get the humour, but I just don't find those movies all that fun. I can enjoy individual scenes on youtube or whatnot, but I've never had the urge to rewatch any of them (I've seen 1,2, and Bride). Also Chucky's run in WCW was downright embarrassing.

Not even Bride?

The first one wasn't really supposed to be that humorous, but the second and third were purposefully bright and cheerful in presentation, and the 4th is straight up horror-comedy. The 5th tries a lot of reference humor.

There are some really gruesome/awesome effects in that scene. Everyone really needs to watch that behind-the-scenes footage about filming the original - it's on YouTube but I'm on my phone at the moment. The best part is definitely watching the rehearsal footage with Catherine Hicks and Brad Dourif acting out various scenes.

Child's Play and Child's Play 2 terrified me as a kid, so its fun to watch them now because its the perfect mix of horror-comedy. The 9-year old inside me still kind of gets scared but at the same time the movies are hilarious. Best of both worlds. But I can see how they could be a miss for you if you didn't experience them at all as a kid.

If you haven't already, make sure you check out the Amicus anthologies like Asylum, Tales From The Crypt, Vault of Horror, and The House That Dripped Blood.

THIS POST APPROVED BY PETER CUSHING:

Oh and because it wouldn't be right for me to NOT recommend Italian horror when at all possible, Mario Bava's Black Sabbath should be considered as well.

Not technically an anthology proper, but some of the Masters of Horror episodes are great too. I thought Cigarette Burns was one of Carpenter's best films in a looooong time (helped along brilliantly by Udo Kier).

Finally, don't forget that Romero and Argento made a short film double feature called Two Evil Eyes. It's alright, the Amicus anthologies proper are all way better.

Man, has anyone read Peggy Webling's manuscript for Frankenstein: An Adventure in the Macabre? It's the play that directly inspired the film, and in this essay it's refereed to as an exception to the simple monster-as-villain takes that a lot previous adaptations had. At the same time, the original script for the Frankenstein film before Whale came on was supposed to have the monster as just an unrepentant murderer with the abnormal brain thing originating in that script and sort of existing as a weird and unnecessary bit in the film we know. I'm curious from the essay's comments though if the original film script deviated from Webling's play, or if she wrote the monster as murderous as well. I can't for the life of me find a copy of the play even though this essay and other sources I've read make references to having read it.

I've said this before, but the Paranormal Activity series gets a bad rap in this thread. Go watch them in theaters on opening night in a packed house, and I can't imagine how you could have a completely awful time, even if you are laughing at the film itself and the reactions in the audience. They all have at least a couple of interesting gimmicks / jump scares, and they all at least try to touch on some some themes of family. I rewatched 4 last night, and even though the spooky demon trappings were pretty lame in this one, the leading couple was pretty charming and as a whole its light years better than other films that pass as watchable in this sub-genre.

On a completely unrelated note: as someone who hasn't seen it in about a decade, how does It hold up after all these years? I'm getting together with some friends tomorrow who (for whatever reason) want to watch a couple of King adaptations other than The Shining. DePalma's Carrie will be one of them, but I need a second.

Trick r Treat is kind of hard to judge if you enjoy anthology horror because if you want to watch something made in the past 15 years that's about it, plus its Halloween themed so it fits with the holiday perfectly.

That said though I really don't agree that its mediocre. It benefits from multiple viewings since you understand everything that's happening from the beginning instead of constantly trying to put the pieces together in your head. The costumes are great, samhain and the undead kids from the school bus are really cool looking and also scary. Its got some pretty solid characters too, my favorite is the girl who the other kids try to play a trick on.

Edit: Yea I did forget about the VHS movies. I'm not the biggest fan of those.

I always defend Creepshow 2, probably because of the six stories that make up the two movies The Raft is my favorite. I just recently read the short story though and I now wonder why they changed the guy actually convincing the girl to have sex with him right before she gets eaten. In the movie he starts copping a feel while she's still asleep. I also think its got the best ending of any of the Creepshow stories.

Silent House - Liked it a lot. I didn't even know there was another Olsen sister, but Elizabeth Olsen was really loving good in this, particularly because she didn't have the benefit of just immediately redoing the take if something went wrong. (For anyone who doesn't know the movie, it's a remake of an Uruguayan film and both of them are shot so as to seem like a single take, though they're actually composed of 12-15 minute takes.)

I'd have to see the Uruguayan original to see if it's structured differently, but I felt this movie telegraphed its surprises WAY too early and far too bluntly. It was a cromulent piece of film, but by the time she's hiding under the table and the little girl hops off above her with the camera flashes, you already know exactly where it's going, and long before the protagonist does.

That said, it's very well put together for how low budget it was. More indie horror needs to take advantage of offscreen sound as an effective tool for suspense.

I pretty much agree with this. There's a few things that probably should have stayed cut, but there's at least one long scene that was put back in that adds way more to the movie than anything else takes away.

Though the double feature has the bonus of having all the fake trailers put back in.
