So what the hell happened? Did someone let their kid do the transfer?

To quote Blu-ray.com:

"the beloved holiday short film has been scrubbed within an inch of its life, buffed and cleaned past the point of no return, and scrubbed -- then artificially sharpened -- again, presumably just 'cause."

Check out what it should look like: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=76164&position=9

You can correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the reason that movies like Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio look so good on Blu (retain strong lines yet are virtually grainless) is because they were reconstructed from the original cels?

If so, that might explain something... Disney wanted to achieve the same kind of look yet no longer had the original cels/backgrounds for SitS or Christmas Carol (admittedly, this seems unlikely) or didn't feel that the juice was worth the squeeze with these lesser works and went with a faster/cheaper method to achieve a "similar" result.

They only use original (surviving) artwork as reference. The processing basically uses a gigantic bank of computers (600+ Mac Pros) to mathematically calculate the image information in place of noise, grain, dirt, damage, etc. It helps that they usually start with high res 4K to 8K scans of camera negatives. Sometimes they have to resort to lesser elements - Steamboat Willie had to be from a duplicate negative since the camera negative was long gone.

Disney apparently found a Winnie the Pooh TV special worth remastering:

Note that while it's clearly from SD sources, the upscale is quite impressive.

It never, ever occurred to me that Easy Rider was not a well-known movie.

Ok, then, I change my answer. I would list The Witches of Eastwick before The Departed. I always thought Departed was good, but a little overrated.

Shout is doing a replacement program for Fist Of Fury

quote:

Shout! Factory has announced they will offer free replacements for Fist of Fury in the new Bruce Lee: The Legacy Collection set. The disc did not feature a Mono Mandarin audio track. This is the latest setback for this set, which was previously recalled for video quality issues. Shout's official announcement reads:

It's come to our attention that on the "Fist of Fury" Blu-ray disc the mono Mandarin audio track is not accessible. We regret this oversight. If you would like a replacement disc, please send an email to info@shoutfactory.com with "Bruce Lee Fist of Fury Replacement" in the subject line, and one will be mailed to you in 3 to 4 weeks

Twilight Time apparently has The Lion in Winter (MGM), Rollerball (MGM), and Used Cars (Fox) now. The Lion in Winter is getting a HTF poll on whether to release or not - rumor has it that the existing HD master isn't very good.

Of course, why a film like The Lion in Winter doesn't have a new 4K transfer is sad. Although, I've heard the original film elements are in bad condition from mishandling years ago. Had it been licensed to Criterion, I doubt whether costs for a restoration would be even in question.

I know some people are opposed to these things on principle, but if you save up a nice wad of cash and then join that Disney Movie Club thing for about 2 months, you can rake in a poo poo load of great films for ridiculously low cost. I joined initially and stuck around for a few months and cleaned house, then did it again about two years later and saved so much on all of them. As long as you decline that monthly offer bullshit you're fine. And sometimes when the monthly offer is even a decent deal when they combo it with 2 or 3 other titles.

e: and right around now is a good time to do it.

Yeah it's a really good deal, and they just recently started selling exclusive to the store DVDs of the Disney Afternoon series that never got finished a few years ago. So far Gargoyles and Talespin are completed, and it looks like they put up all the series for Goof Troop as well.

As for the deals, it's a great value, especially if you stack the purchases, as the highest value will be full price, unless it one of the monthly deals. For example, this monthly deal for me is Monster Inc + Monster Unversity for $40 with free shipping. That honestly a great deal since Monster Inc (which is the 3D one) is almost always $30 on Amazon. After that any other movie I get is the listed sale price.

A question that's probably been asked before: Is there any chance that The Killer or Hard-Boiled will ever get a better quality Blu-Ray release? I bought the Blu-Ray for Hard-Boiled, knowing about the bad quality transfer, but I still enjoyed the film regardless. Ran's Blu-Ray conversion was done by StudioCanal while all the rest of the Kurosawa Blu-Rays have been done by Criterion. Criterion has done Ran on DVD, though. Obviously, StudioCanal's work is not in the same ballpark as Criterion's.

Thrilled as hell about Throne of Blood. It has been too long since the last Kurosawa transfer, so I was getting worried that they had decided that they were finished with the ones that would be profitable enough. Still another half dozen that I hope they get around to at some point...
