Inverse Icarus posted:For the record, it was Jason Buhlman who did the mouse swinging on weapon cords. Nah, SKR is the one who wanted to restrict you, the player, from speaking at the table if you took to many free actions to reload. Speaking is a free action, and to him that includes out-of-character. Seriously, you can't make poo poo up about SKR. He's just that good at it himself.

I'm playing in a campaign where monster PCs are fine and the cast rotates from session to session. I'm thinking of bringing in a Bralani at level 7, does anybody have build advice? Your aerial mobility is good enough that you can probably kite almost anything when fighting outdoors. But in dungeons, an alternative would probably be desirable.

pawsplay posted:I actually kind of like the idea they tried something out, especially what is a piece of equipment and not a feat. It could be argued all day what kind of action using a weapon cord "should" be. Personally, I've had experience enough with lanyards to think they do require a move action and aren't all that great, which is why they aren't on all real weapons. I think this points to the problem of putting out weapons with cords on them as something all adventurers want, rather than a handy device for not having to bend over to retrieve your weapon when you have to release it quickly. It's definitely less good, in my mind, than a sheathe, for drawing, but obviously better for stowing. It really should have been designed in the first place as an alternative to a sheathe or belt-tucking your blade, not as a nifty adventurer sporting accessory. It's the same kind of deficient reasoning that gave us the exotic katana. The only reason players started using weapon cords was to attempt to get around the crippling Gunslingers got in the reload rules.

MoonwalkInvincible posted:Nothing is more mysterious to me in Pathfinder balance issues than people who think that gunslingers are too powerful and that it's a serious problem. I find the firearms mechanics jaw-droppingly bad. They bypass an entire part of the rules (AC) and the price they pay is being completely awful. Which means that most of the time, the gunslinger is either screwing someone or being screwed. As the fighter is to the gunslinger, so the wizard is to a hypothetical class that does nothing but cast variations on magic missile. Unless you're a pistolero and you like knocking Gargantuan dragons prone by hitting them twice in one round, there really isn't much to write home about. This is one of the few rules add-ons that I as a third party publisher basically pretend doesn't exist. There are several sets of firearms rules put out by third parties that are decidedly less bad, and some of them predate Pathfinder's shambling attempt at firearms rules. It wouldn't even seem that bad, if it weren't pointed out in the beta test how bad all the rules were. If it was just some giant turd created after a night of feverish dreams by a dev working under a deadline, I could sort of forgive it. As it is, I can only blame groupthink.

Reminder: the entirety of Ultimate Combat's "open beta" was spent telling Paizo the firearms rules were bad. Literally not one person defended them.

Honestly if I were to pick one thing that needs changed in Paizo's game design culture it's treating "open betas" as a freebie hype machine rather than an actual beta. I feel like a lot can grow from there.

It seems like the wider gaming industry has started seeing the beta phase as a marketing opportunity rather than an engineering phase. The MMO and crowd-sourced market is rife with companies who have "open beta" phases where they appear to ignore everything that the players feed back to them.

Yeah I don't usually play Wizards, or other limited use spellcasters, but I have wanted to try the Force Missile Mage. Perhaps with that one Force focused prestige class in one of the later arcane books in 3.5. Or maybe adding that one War Wizard kind of prestige class from the Dragonlance books that adds a bonus to damage that shows up on each missile. But I have never really had the chance.

This was a couple pages ago, but speaking of useless stuff, do they still have that one crossbow feat that does literally nothing whatsoever in any situation because it gives your character an ability that is inherent to crossbows, or did they finally fix it? I think it was Prone Shooter.

I killed a PC in a game last week, the (mostly newbie) players somehow managed to build a group that almost had no way to hit an enemy more than 35' in the air, and an Air Walking Druid stomped their face in before they hit on the idea to summon air elementals to "bull rush her downwards." Lightning Orb yhatzee'd its 3d6 on the 2-Handed Ranger (who didn't buy a bow!) when she was low, and she shot to -14, dying. When the Druid was within range, the Bard cast Hideous Laughter, and the Druid failed her save. At that point I wasn't sure what happens when you fall down laughing with Air Walk on. I ruled on the fly they she just sat there, rolling on the air laughing. With no AoOs and a penalty to her AC/CMD, the Air Elementals quickly knocked her down with Bull Rush. When the Druid got slammed to within 15' of the ground, the Bard asked if he could use his whip to drag her down. That seemed clever enough to end the encounter, and I let him do a CMB against her, which me made. The Summoner was plinking her with Acid Arrows for most of this, and she died pretty much immediately upon hitting the ground, still cackling madly as the party tore her to pieces for killing their ally. The entire party vowed to buy bows next time they were in town. They also fought a Dwarf Earth Druid, but that wasn't nearly as interesting as they crushed him.

I started a group of newbies a couple months back. We only got into a couple sessions and scheduling became a headache so it fell through, but we're starting up again this Sunday!! The last session i had a bandit ambush set up for the group and almost killed their ranger. I kinda want to hunt them down and try to capture some of the party to be put into slavery...

I'm thinking of retooling Pathfinder for a more pulpy, swords-and-sorcery feel. I'm aware of E6 and its relatives, although I have some other ideas in mind. Has anyone else ever tackled this idea? Are there any good books in print that would help?

The people in that screenshot are from all over north America, and it's really awesome to get to talk with all of these people I barely ever see anymore for a few hours a week and kill some ogres. As for the tool, I'm working on a custom fork of MapTool for a project, but the vast majority of the codebase is the same. http://www.rptools.net/?page=maptool We just use Google Hangouts to handle the video/voice. Prior to that we used Skype, but webcams really add a lot to an online game. I mean, how can you roleplay a PF goblin without making a face like this? (The map and most of the art in this screenshot are from Paizo's Legacy of Fire campaign) HORSEDOGGIES!

So I have a level 3 Half-Orc Alchemist with the Toothy racial trait and Feral Mutagen. Starting with 18 Strength, I drink my +Strength mutagen and Enlarge Person extract. That gives me 24 Strength and four primary natural attacks So on a full attack, I hit four times at +8 (+2 BAB, +7 Str, -1 Enlarge Person), once for 2d6+7, twice for 1d8+7, and once for 1d6+7, and then I can add Power Attack and Sneak Attack (from Vivisectionist) on top of that. Did I mess up somewhere? I wouldn't be surprised if I did because frankly, that sounds completely ridiculous.
