An X-Com anime would be pretty great in the spirit of something like Advance of the Giants/Attack on Titan. Make the commander and support staff and maybe a small hand-full of "face" soldiers, then have a lot of supporting cast that just get horribly murdered every episode.

And--this might just be the product of a fever dream, BUT--I swear there was a short comic that came with one version of the game or another. It featured an X-Com squad getting horribly eaten.

Pretty much!

I think an X-Com LP of the Enemy Within expansion with all the extra set-piece missions could be a fantastic fit for a TV show or anime. You have your first episode for the First Encounter and the launching of X-Com. Punctuate the episode with a heroic battle saving civilians from Sectoids, emphasizing how dangerous those little plasma guns they have are.

May want to play it coy at first, not have any deaths upfront, have one guy who's cocksure and full of fire and then one of the sectoids supes up and takes his head off.

Then you have the episode where this ~super significant tragic loss~ is mourned, but the heroes band together to be more valiant and fight all the harder. Then PoV shift to a Civvie (Zhang would be perfect) who realizes the menace of the Thin Men infiltrating society and his organization's capitulation in their efforts (hints of EXALT). He contacts X-Com (somehow) and we get to see the Thin Men in action.

The aliens in the game have enough gradually deployed gimmicks and elements that every episode could have another surprise from the alien menace as XCom scrambles to understand what's against them. Finally they get a break and shoot down a UFO, capturing its Outsider pilot. They strike the base, things are looking good. Sectoid Commander captured!

Then as the interrogation begins a terror attack calls all the best and brightest out of the base and while they're gone the base invasion begins and people are blowing up left and right. They finally get essential staff to safety, they upload the findings from the interrogation just as the enemy is about to free the commander, and the designated hero blows up the base in a suicide effort to stop the enemy from learning too much.

Close out season one by showing the remaining Xcom activating their back-up base and preparing for the long haul.

It looks like they get the same full range of hair / hat / helmet options that normal soldiers get. So you can give a mechtrooper a helmet. Or Guile hair.

Or a fedora.

Whenever you have too many of a class, you shouldn't dismiss / kill off the excess. The game has a weighted formula for new promotions, pushing towards classes you have few of and away from those you have over-represented. So your best chance for getting a non-sniper is to just let squaddie snipers pile up.

Obviously second wave options like that will change things up. Things like that make the best of a bad situation, and getting a heavy with max starting aim means you can use a normally weak skill like rapid reaction and make a pretty ridiculous gunner.

Yeah, when I use those options I end up with a lot of really blind heavies, so I take Holo-Targeting on the blindest one so he can help out the others. I don't care if he hits anything, so shooting more than once isn't a real concern--he's strictly to make sure others have less chance to miss. He also ends up being a suppression monkey, obviously.

One of the best things about this show is that they didn't have much of a budget- all the office scenes were shot at the BBC offices i believe, there's lots of recycled footage, and they only really made a couple of bits of music, including the theme you hear in the trailer. So if there's a sad scene, like a kid dying or something, they just play the really porn-ey theme tune, but slowed down in a minor key.

I don't know of any, but I can tack on a Normal-skill Geoscape mode in my Implassic mod, which I'll release in a few days after EW comes out. You can also do it yourself with a resource editor and modify the DefaultGameCore.ini file to adjust some of the Geoscape settings to Normal in the more difficult skill settings.

Not to be outdone, my Heavy blew the second one finished off the second nearly dead one with a rocket. A lot of Beagle's non-XCOM videos are pretty entertaining, to be honest, particularly his Arma II videos. They're pretty interesting to watch, but... yes, I share your pain, along with many. We can only hope that Firaxis sent Beagle a review copy of Enemy Within.

Yep. Impossible is at it's hardest for the first few months, if you survive that the rest is comparatively easy. He's said that he's finished & won I/I games, but stopped playing them out after the first couple of victories. In the second series I think he would have gone on to win, he had a decent position.

A lot of the really hosed parts of Impossible are dealing with low-level soldiers and the 4 man squad. When you get in lovely positions, you don't have special abilities or enough dudes to open good flanks. Once you get a OTS and a skilled crew, the battlescape has a lot more tactical opportunities.

The whole rest of that Shacktac Arma crew makes some pretty awesome vids. I got totally sucked into them because of Ironman Impossible. CHkilroy is as funny as Beagle, and if you enjoy Dyslexi's more serious take you have videos for months. But it's not Xcom.

I've always considered Stargate SG-1 the closest thing to an X-COM television series so far. It has that sense of progress and improvement from retro-engineering alien tech, even if it isn't exactly about defending the world from imminent alien attack (though it often is).

I think learning how to handle the early game is ultimately what determines your rate of success in this game. Once you get ranked up squaddies, satellite coverage, and good weapons/armor the game's difficulty starts to nosedive

To be fair, in SG-1, when the Humans don't care about pesky things like "peaceful contact" and "trade negotiations" they wipe the floor with the aliens quite handily:

In Xenonauts, this is indeed a thing - the local forces will pay you about half the value of the recoverable tech if you let them airstrike the place.

Another flavor feature I like in that game is that it tells you each troop's prior combat experience - whether they be a Marine who served in Vietnam or what have you.
