I remember picking that book out in the elementary school library because it looked neat and having no idea what was going on when I tried reading it. I looked up the summary just now and still have no idea what the gently caress. Seems like a really convoluted plot with a ton of characters for something that has talking animals, but maybe its just because I haven't read any of the series.

i wasnt exaggerating when i implied it was got for kids. tons of food (it has official loving cookbooks) and characters and like 10 plots at once

iirc that one is late in the series and the early ones don't have that problem, he just fell into the usual genre trap of a long-running series being smothered by its overgrown mythology

loved them when I was a kid, saw him at a live reading once

Anything that actually suggests you read the Silmarillion as a "fantasy 102" book is a garbage flowchart. Really no one should read it, its a novel length appendix. Thanks Christopher for giving us all the stuff that your dad knew better than to include when actually setting about the task of telling a story.

was reading the wikipedia entry for the giver and found out this

quote:

A film is being adapted which was given the green light in December 2012. Jeff Bridges is set to play The Giver[19] and Brenton Thwaites will play Jonas, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgård, and Taylor Swift will also appear in the film.

this actually might not be bad

i just finished handmaid's tale on the recommendation of the thread. it was really good as a thought experiment but atwood never seems to make anything exciting. i read oryx and crake before and had the same reaction after finishing.

i still advise reading it but dont expect to be entertained by it

agreed. handmaids tale really could have benefited from some explosions, maybe a chase through a crowded metropolis on flying motorcycles, and a wisecracking alien or maybe robot sidekick.

then lets hear your ideas about how add excitement to handmaids tail. maybe the main character has an identical twin she doesnt know about who is also a serial killer and the main character has until midnight before her twin kills again? would that make it exciting enough for you?

e: also add in wookies and jedis
