I bought one of these, but I can't figure out how to put it together. They shipped it with the back off, and I can't make it go back on. Do I need to disassemble the whole back to put it back on or what?

Any tips? I just got mine (an hour before I leave for vacation). My Mirra was simple (just bolt the back on). I see the four posts that the back rests on, but I can't seem to get the last one on. Is there a trick?

I just nabbed the base model Mirra (the original) off CL for $100, and even in it's minimally-adjustable form, it is a very comfortable chair if you're a desk-monkey for 6+ hours a day. If you see one of these, don't be afraid of it - it's well worth it.

On mine, one side had a little bit more space than the other. I put the bottom in on the narrow side, then the other bottom, top narrow side, finally the last one. The top posts are super lovely, and I ended up with 3 blood blisters from pinching my fingers putting it together. It took a ton more effort than I expected, so I maybe didn't do it right.

Are leap chairs really worth the price? I'm putting together some furniture now (mostly IKEA) for my new place. I spend a lot of time on my rear end though, so maybe I should splurge a little.

Yes. If your butt spends most of its time in front of a computer, it needs to be in something like a Leap. As far as I am concerned, a good chair is as important as a good mattress.

As sad as that sounds.

Bay area goons, there's a guy on craigslist selling Leap v2 for $250:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/fuo/4104242605.html

I just scored one from him for $220 since it had scuffs from him dropping it on the driveway while bringing it out to show me. They're all in great condition from what I can tell.

Boyfriend and I just got some great chairs from a local office liquidation place here in Orlando that was doing a two day open house sale (normally they only sell to businesses). I got a Haworth Zody for $200 and he got a Steelcase Think for $150, both in pristine condition. This is easily the most comfortable chair I've ever used... I was actually hoping to get a Very at some point and figured I'd have to spend more, so getting the next model up for less was a pretty fantastic surprise.

The staff were incredibly helpful and really knew their stuff, and everything they were selling looked to be in very good condition. Unfortunately, like I said, they're not normally open to the public and this was only a two day thing that ended today, but it couldn't hurt to shoot them an email and see what they can do. They also said they were going to be expanding in January and might be opening a real storefront, so there's that as well.

Edit: it looks like the sale is actually continuing into tomorrow for anyone interested in the area.

This isn't chair related directly, but a few months ago I went and bought a plexiglass chair mat for my apartment to protect my increasingly worn carpet.

I was amazed at the amount of static electricity that generated. I received painful shocks and manged to blue-screen the computer a few times, so I immediately ditched the mat.

Tonight I replaced it with a bamboo floor mat from Office Max - first impressions are very good! It's about the same weight, much less cumbersome, and better looking than a plastic mat. Most importantly I don't expect to see the severe static electricity problem. Only issue is I'm a big guy, so I want to be gentle when I stand up and sit down, I really don't want it to crack. However I've been told that the bamboo material is surprisingly strong and durable.

Along with the other giant dudes in this thread I also destroy chairs on a regular basis. I'm also almost 7ft tall and combined with being ~300 I've been looking at this: http://www.destinationxl.com/1/1/3097-executive-leather-office-chair.html and although it seems completely ridiculous with its 1,000lb rating - I seriously have my doubts it will stand up to the abuse of me sitting in it. There is something about office chairs; in my experience; that seems like they're all made to last a very limited amount of time, arms break off, posts bust through to the carpet, wheels break off, seats break off, etc. I also mirror other statements about Aeron Size B for tall guys: if you are tall it will literally destroy your knees. Regrettably I bought a C and even it causes problems which is why I'm now looking for another solution. I hate the thought of swamp rear end from a leather chair though, one design feature of the Aeron that was smart.

"Big and tall" chairs like that may be a bit more robust, but all the ones I've seen still are made out of lovely materials and you'll compress the foam down/destroy it in a year or two.

Steelcase makes "plus" versions of some it's chairs that increase the size of some parts and bump the capacity up to 500 pounds (most chairs seem to be rated in the 250-300 range).

For example:

http://www.steelcase.com/en/products/category/seating/task/criterion-plus/pages/overview.aspx
http://www.steelcase.com/en/products/category/seating/task/leapplus/pages/overview.aspx

I've never seen a cheap Leap Plus anywhere, but Criterion Plus models do pop up on my local Craigslist from time to time.

Oh no, not again.
I'm fairly tall/lanky at 6'2, 150lbs, however surface of the desk I'm currently stuck with in my home office sits at about 30.75" above the ground, and my recently purchased cheapo ergo chair at max height is only about 20.5", which seems to be fairly standard. Now I'm not sure if I have unusually long arms, but my elbows sit a good 4-5" below the desk surface, which is fairly uncomfortable when typing/mousing for any extended period of time due to the corner of the desk digging into my forearm flesh/bone, as well as shoulder pain from raising my arm rests up too high to take some of the pressure off. Is a booster seat of some sort my best option? The seat on this chair is contoured so I feel like it might sit oddly, and most of the ones I came across are more for lower back pain than increasing height.

Can't Lose

This thread and The Wirecutter have sold me on the Leap V2, now I'm trying to select a vendor.

There was some brief talk of Madison Seating as an unauthorized seller of open box chairs earlier in the thread, but nothing really conclusive as to what quality of product they were shipping.

They have an "open box" Leap V2 on their website for $475 shipped, and a "NEW" (but also open box?) Leap V2 on eBay for $625 shipped.

I'm not sure how to read between the lines here, I guess I should assume the $475 one is going to have signs of wear/use on it whereas the $625 might not necessarily? I feel like $625 is approaching the point where I should just go with an authorized reseller and get a brand-new chair, but I might be willing to roll the dice on the $475 version. For what it's worth, they have very good feedback on eBay.

Buyer beware when it comes to Madison Seating. They're pretty slimy. You might get a basically new chair, and you might also get something that's absolutely trashed. Either way, don't expect to hear anything from their customer service, and fully expect the manufacturer's warranty to be void.

So, I've been looking at office chairs for the past week, and most of the Aerons/Leaps I've seen have been going for $450-$550. There's an authorized retailer selling Aerons on Amazon for $680. It seems like it's worth the extra $230ish for the 12-year warranty; is it worth waiting around in the hopes of finding something much cheaper?

Thanks Ants

Do you have details for the size of the Aeron in question, the accessories etc?

I don't know what the US market is like for chairs but if I had $680 I'd be on the lookout for a lightly used Embody. If you've sat in an Aeron and like it then ignore me though.

It is a size C (I'm a big dude) with adjustable back & seat, armrests (presumably not leather, but I don't care) and the graphite frame. I know basically nothing about chairs beyond what I've read in the first couple and last couple of pages of this thread.

I sat in an Aeron once probably ten years ago, and remember it seeming very comfortable.

Read some of Rotten Red Rod's posts if you want an earfull on why you shouldn't buy an Aeron. Very poor configuration options, so if it doesn't fit you perfectly you will probably hate the hell out of it. I had one and the lumbar/back just did not fit me at all, so I traded it back in for a Mirra which at least fit my back correctly.

If you have to choose between Aeron and Leap then definitely go Leap.

Speaking of the Mirra though, what the heck is up with the weird foam pad under the front half of the seat? I keep wanting to rip it out because it just feels off.

Yeah this. The Aeron isn't an ergonomic chair and was never designed to be one.

When you have a choice between used and new, go for new. It's worth the extra $200+ for a non-voided warranty and a chair that doesn't already have wear on it. The Aeron, for example, has been around for 19 years, so if you buy one used, there's a chance you're getting a chair that might have already been used for a decade or more. And that's the time when chairs start to break down.

Does anyone know the general price range for Embody repairs? I got mine used, so I don't think I can utilize the warranty. The lateral movement on the left arm doesn't lock into the set positions, it just floats. It must have been damaged in my last move.

I hate, hate the Aeron because I find it uncomfortable, it makes me feel tired and the edge of the seat really digs into my hamstrings. FWIW, I'm about 5'8" and have an average-to-slim build. The one thing I will say about it though is that it's built like an absolute tank and will probably last until your great-great-great-great grandchildren's lifetime. I think this is the main reason for its popularity to this day to businesses.

My Leap V2, which I find heaven compared to the Aeron, already squeaks when I rotate the seat.

Check for used office furniture stores in your city, a year ago I got a leap v2 for $60. Maybe it was $60 for a reason though, it kills my lower back. I think the back thing is broken or I haven't figured out how to sit in it properly yet after a year.

I looked up manuals for the leap awhile ago but does anyone know a "proper" way of sitting in one? I constantly mess with the settings but  maybe I should try fixing the back adjuster.

I rolled the dice based on Madison Seating's good eBay feedback, and it paid off.

For $460 shipped I got a loaded Mirra that looks brand new, and it arrived in less than a week. It even has the FlexFront adjustable seat depth option despite not being advertised as such.

My impression was that they sell their better-condition chairs as "new" on eBay and the worse ones are cheaper directly from their website, but maybe that's not the case. Either way, I'm really pleased with my purchase.
