I really like the first two, but I'm not sure the profile pictures come off as candid, assuming that was the intention. Even not facing the camera their postures seem super aware of it.

They look like very nice engagement pictures (which they clearly aren't, judging by her hand in the third picture) and should raise a ton of questions from aunts on facebook when they post them.

The first two are very very nice, although I'd probably clean up some of that dog hair on his sweater in the 2nd one.

What were they shot with?

I like the shots, but they seem a little blown out or a touch over exposed for me, such that they are little hard to look at with the white space around the faces on the last three shots.

I like the first one the best - the grey car plastic (rubber? I don't know what cars are made from) is a bit boring and vaguely distracting. This one has colour, the heat strip things above her form another nice background pattern and there feels more of a - I'm going to say it - "story" to it.

I have been working my balls off doing very boring "men at conference" and "managers smiling awkwardly at camera" stuff, which has been smashing money, but I finally got to do some more interesting stuff again - a live band shoot for the gently caress of it (for a friend and for the chance to socialise), a stupid but fun videogame tournament in a bar in Soho for Mount Your Friends and a mag shoot of a hunkalicious videogame voice actor guy

Seconding the nice, and it's probably a phone, but still good advice.

Also that guy looks like Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper had a baby together, which I think is some sort of genetic jackpot.

Yes he is an unfairly handsome prick. Except he wasn't a prick, he was really nice and brilliant to work with (for three and a half minutes whilst his cab waited impatiently nearby hooray editorial portraiture).

I feel like I need a spotter / mua / fashion person to remember to do all that phone in pocket and other crap. Or, I just need to shape up and remember to look for that stuff (I never do).

Yeah it's a bitch to remember especially when time is an issue! One I tend to forget (but remember it more and more) are those stupidly ugly black hair elastics that girls tend to have around their wrists!

Shot some corporate head shots for our new company. Gridded softbox main and then a lightly uncovered white umbrella on axis for fill. I think I have a shot where I did not set off the umbrella to show the difference it made. We focus mainly on games, which is why I wanted smiles all around.

While it's not quite the session portraiture that I wish I were doing, I have been doing a lot of people shootin' lately. A local club asked if I could do photo booth one night because apparently the person they had before sucked. I said sure, why not, and bought a little Canon CP-900 printer. Since then, it's turned into a bit of a thing, and I'm getting booked for events months in advance now.

Every time out, I learn something new to improve my workflow. Right now, I'm stuck for a way to speed up printouts, and am thinking of moving to two printers, or setting up some sort of automated touchscreen system, but for now, it's satisfying my need to shoot people and make money. Apologies for the watermarks, I downloaded them from my own facebook.

How was your setup on this? I have to do something similar with only a light and a reflector.

Flash (with umbrella) slightly to the right, near where I was taking the picture from (maybe 6 feet away from the model) raised above the model tilted toward the model and a second person positioned on the left holding a reflector that's lower than the model (near his waist and tilted up and towards him like this \ (maybe slightly more tilted towards him) to smooth out the shadow and try to push some light onto his face/eyes.

Hope that helps :)

Both were a Paul Buff Einstein with a 64" soft silver parabolic high and center. I need to be able to cover individuals as well as groups of 12, and a big honkin' light source helps with that.

Yeah a snooted rim for the shoulders would have made some separation, but the goal was also to use the photos for a 3D, low poly, head sculpture, and we wanted almost black in the back side.

My husband, who is a programmer, and myself, a 3D artist, have made a new app studio focusing on videogames. We wanted a way to present us and our two marketing guys in a way that capitalizes on our 3D abilities for the website, https://www.snjohus.com

I have not finished the 3d version of myself or Ágúst, but when we do, we will figure out how to integrate them into the website.

These are all technically competent, but are also completely forgettable. Especially the first one, which is essentially flickrexplore.jpg. Unless you had a client that specifically asked for this sort of thing and paid well enough for it, these are all far too safe. I'd really encourage you to take more chances if this is personal work.

I'd argue that the second one is a little too wide, I keep looking past her and focusing on the barrel distortion.

I really appreciate this. You're absolutely right in that they're very safe but very forgettable.

They're senior portraits, so it is a paid gig. I think they definitely want and expect some safe photos, but I also think that if I want to differentiate and grow I need to take some risks and step things up. Get some safe shots, but then take more risks. I think I've definitely been focusing a bit too much on keeping everything technically sound.
