Male or Unisex names becoming female is pretty common (like Shannon or Ashley) but rarely go the other way. I think it's for basically the same reason that many places frown much harder on male homosexuals than lesbians: femininity is viewed as inherently weaker than or inferior to masculinity, and a man taking a female name or the "female place" in a relationship is considered that much more taboo.

Does this mean we can talk about people that insist upon dumb nicknames? I knew a couple of brothers during my grade and high school years, the older of whom was named Mike. Not too long ago I became friends with a woman who it turns out went to college with both of them, and the older brother started going around insisting everyone call him Magnus. He got zero respect for this.

In the vein of silly nicknames, there used to be a guy at my school who called himself Butters, after Butters from South Park. We went with it because he was one of seven Justins (including a girl named Justin) in that circle of people. In the same group is a guy who calls himself Skittles, and a Danny that half the people call Gideon.

Saw a birth announcement for an Axton on Facebook, who is apparently also a character from Borderlands 2. I don't know if that's where they got the name from but to me it sounds clunky as gently caress for a first name. I also saw an Aydien on some kid's show, but it was still pronounced Aidan. What the hell, stop loving with perfectly good names!

Slow day at work, caught up on the thread. My dad wanted to name me Kid (or Kidd, I never asked how he wanted to spell it), fortunately my mom talked him out of it. I love you, Mom. My sister worked for an international company, there was a woman in the China office with the surname Miao who had adopted the English surname Kitty. You don't get more Bond girl name-y than Kitty Miao. Choco1980 posted:For a while I worked at a chain of Korean dry cleaners where 90% of the employees were Korean Americans, and often they would adopt "American" names as their nicknames that they just had all the non-Korean customers call them to simplify things. Probably intentional, but the Korean dude my family takes their cars to for repairs goes by Bruce Lee. I've got one of his business cards in a desk drawer somewhere back home. Lotish posted:Got a new student today from Thailand. Not a terrible name, per se--just one that causes an English speaker to pause. "Wipaporn." Pronounced like you think: like a command to beat a pornagrapher or pornstar with a whip. Not really... the vowel sound in พร ("porn") is อ, which is an /aw/ sound (as in lawn). There's really not a good way to transliterate Thai into the English alphabet, and the "official" one is probably the worst of the lot for non-speakers trying to get close to the Thai pronunciation. Another example: the main airport in Bangkok is Suvarnabhumi Airport. Pronounced like "Su-wan-na-poom", written that way in English because of Sanskrit.

In high school, I knew a girl named Leaha (the second "a" is silent) and a guy named Eliza. The "z" is pronounced like the "s" in "treasure." I guess his parents couldn't decide between Elijah and Elisha so they smashed them together in defiance of English phonetics.Pompous Rhombus posted:My dad wanted to name me Kid (or Kidd, I never asked how he wanted to spell it), fortunately my mom talked him out of it.
