I just wrapped up a collection of songs yesterday that follow the same theme, but the songs are generally stylistically different. A bit of electronic here, a bit of doo-wop there. The goal was to include some sort of vocals on every track. https://soundcloud.com/jeremy-zavala/sets/you-wont-be-back-forever-ep

I wrote and co-produced this song for my best friend which he released on my indie label HeavyRoc Music in NYC and premiered by VICE's music blog THUMP. Gary Jules, briefly famous in the pop-realm from the Donnie Darko's film cover of Mad World, is the featured vocalist on it. We have a bunch of cool dance-centric remixes coming out, the only one so far is by Follow Me which is very groovy. Everything was recorded/mixed/mastered in NYC and Asheville, NC. I play drums in this band with my 2 friends who play bass and guitar. We all like Helmet and the Melvins. We all sing. We're all from defunct bands and now in our 30's. It's pretty much noise-rock with choruses. Please throw us some feedback on here or on Soundcloud. This is our first EP, we have a second recorded that should be up in the next few weeks. https://soundcloud.com/cmbandinfo Oh, and we record everything ourselves in my basement on a Power Mac G5 running Logic 8. ToxicWind posted:Been trying to actually complete songs lately, rather than start something and never come back to it. The only thing I could really think of that might improve this is that I thought that the section from around 1:00 to around 1:15 went on for a little to long, but that's just me. Also, really cool artwork, did you find that somewhere or was it made for you? Typo92 posted:some ambient-ish/chillout music: https://soundcloud.com/egodeaf/midnight This is really cool, I love when the eight note line comes in and the chords start to get more expansive, and it all builds up moving towards the end, really really well done. I wasn't a huge fan of the effects used on the voice at the end, I think it might of worked better if you took the voice even lower or something. I have to go now, but I think I might try and do this again in a day or two, if I have the time. Also, my band released our first album a few months ago and I would love some feedback of any kind, it was kinda just a pet project that accidentally grew into a whole concept album. beatlegs posted:So I made a new song, I think it's a big improvement over my previous stuff. Spent hours & hours on recording & tweaking it. Great job with the drums - really clear, but atmospheric at the same time. I like your style a lot: lush, psychedelic without being cutesy, enjoyed the lyrics, and seconding the horn section and the subsequent guitar solo... I enjoyed the rawness of the solo. I think you could do really well with this simple (instrument-wise) approach - have you listened to any of the new MGMT stuff? Their stuff is so meandering - I prefer the focus of your songs. Anyway, good work!

Managed to do it in one take and it worked pretty well.

I used an MPC 4000 for the beats and to sample the game music, and sequenced everything in logic. FYI, There's a sweet tool in SNES9X that lets you take the individual MIDI outputs from the game. I wouldn't have been able to do this with out it.

Going for hyper-polished, smooth yet danceable, a lil' bit porno, soul/R&B/funk. I worship Prince, and while I could only dream of attaining his heights of greatness, I'm happy with this work. These are all very compact, super polished R&B/soul packages. It really works well as an EP, though I've put my outsider suggestions for track order after each blurb. That said, I don't think Honest Man should kick off the record. You've got range, homie, but you're sticking mainly to the upper register. I'm curious to hear you summon a little less Jeff Buckley and a little more Don Covay, if that makes any sense. Anyways, congrats on the standout work. Collarbone, White Noise and Slow Burn are the highlights for me. Hope this isn't too critical, I know nothing about the trials of making music. -- Honest Man - I think this one plays it a bit safe, aurally and lyrically. It really starts to piece together in the last 45 seconds but feels like it could use a few more idiosyncratic moments early on. The poetry is sweet. (end on the upbeat note, track 5) Collarbone - This gets weird real quick, it's like an entirely different thing going on than Honest Man and I like it. It's dense, imagistic, and sends your voice into a real nice slur-stutter at certain points. I almost want the lyrics to fade into that solo (which could be twice as long!) at the end rather than just move aside for it politely. That said, the 10 second intro seems at odds with the rest of the piece. (moody enough to be the intro, track 1) Slow Burn - Sexy poo poo. You know, you've got great cadence, be careful to not overstuff your songs lyrically. Take some time, stretch that poo poo out. The mood is a slow-burn, but at 3:37 you run the risk of interrupting the foreplay. And because you are so intelligible the real challenge for you in these songs (or this style) may actually turn out to be making yourself less comprehensible or concrete. Don't fear abstraction. (my third favorite and the anchor of the second half, track 4) White Noise - This song is loving intricate. Did you censor "I'm not about to gently caress with this white noise"? Seriously, don't censor yourself. This is a great track, and it sticks to the soul principle of not playing it too complex with the writing and focusing on precision of mood and delivery. A lot of soul looks plain on paper, it's only when you hear someone singing their rear end off that it really makes sense. (track 2) Trying Hard - This one's a bit hard for me; maybe it's just too up front. I'm really digging some of the experimentation and how it takes its time getting from here to there, but there are parts that feel like they're going through the motions. I think this would work as a breather in the middle of the EP before heating things up again with Slow Burn. (this is track 3)

I can see the Prince influence without the songs loosing their own touch, and like other people said you have a wonderful voice that can mix well with this style of music. I don't listen to Prince or soul music often at all and I really enjoyed it! The music I make is usually a little too on the fringes for my band to play, so usually they just get sent to my Soundcloud to decay.
