I'm actually pretty surprised that they announced the further versions of No Retreat since I remember an interview with the developer (Paridis) that stated there wouldn't be GMT versions of NR3 or NR4.

Can anyone here give some opinions on U Boat Leader, Steel Wolves and Silent War?

I'm looking for a strategic submarine command game, and these fit the bill. I don't like the Pacific campaign that much, because it becomes so much easier in time. The price tag on Steel Wolves is also pretty big, so my eye was drawn to U Boat Leader.

Anyone have experience with it?

I'm also considering The Hunters, despite it being a tactical game instead of a strategic one.

I own Silent War, and it sits unplayed. You set up all the pieces, and then make very minor decisions and roll a d10 a shitton of times. Repeat a bunch more times, and your turn is over. If you roll well, the war continues, if you roll poorly, then you lose.

I haven't really played it though, so maybe at some point there are choices to be made? I dunno, I wasn't sticking around to find out.

I really hope the P500 of For the People succeeds sometime in the next 6 months. On a lighter note, I'll be finishing up my Vassal module of The Legend of Robin Hood in the next day or so. Anyone interested in playtesting it with me to make sure there's nothing explosively wrong with it?

For the people is good and I don't get to play it often enough but it does have a few things that make it clear that it was one of the very first cdgs. Single deck/no firing of enemy events/a lot if cards means that it's usually not worth firing an event at all. It's more of a campaign game than deck management like pog. I still like I though, it has one of the better battle systems out there.

I can confirm that silent war/steel wolves is not all that. I wouldn't really recommend them unless you are extremely patient.

I made the mistake of getting both a distant plain AND Cuba libre. Reading the play notes and developer diary for ADP did cure a lot of the hang ups I had with it. Maybe I was more sensitive to the target matter than the other volumes. I do like the different dynamics in all three volumes though. I might finish off the collection by getting fire in the lake once it comes out.

I went ahead and preordered Fire in the Lake and bought Navajo Wars because, goddamn, it looks amazing. Not sure if it's been mentioned, but GMT is having a 20% off sale right now. Use code Fall201320 during checkout.

You get 50% off if you P500'd a game in this list plus one addtional 50% to use (so, if you bought 3 your get 4 at 50% off) - use code Fall201350 during checkout:

My collection is like 50% GMT and none of it has ever been bought directly from GMT. Even with that discount, they're still more expensive than my normal online retailer, who isn't having a sale. I can't understand it.

NWS, for whatever reason they're almost always the cheapest after shipping. I'm in Canada, so YMMV. The sticker prices are always like $20 cheaper than GMT though. Like just checking a title at random- 1805: Sea of Glory is $59 on GMT and $34 on NWS. That price differential is shocking.

It's entirely pointless for me to P500 or order for GMT because with the way that P&P comes out and the fact that I have to pay tax, it doesn't actually mean that I get that much of a discount and I actually get more of a discount from my supplier. As well as that, P500s don't actually arrive here in England that much sooner than the regular release, making it slightly pointless to actually order anything.

I'm thinking of giving ADP a 1-player tryout when I have the time, but man, so many drat flowcharts in order to play the 1P game.

I'm thinking about teaching Bulge 20 on VASSAL sometime, let me know if you want to give it a try. It's got a similar amount of pieces on the board but a fairly different philosophy than the Fading Glory (Napoleonic 20s). It's an interesting take on the Battle of the Bulge for sure.

Do you go on the IRC channel #boardgoons? There's usually a couple people on who play wargames, and it's usually easier to get a game going on there than through forums or email.

IRC is pretty much the best place to find people willing to play wargames with you. Also, tomorrow might be my first live game of Cuba Libre! I'm really excited! I'll probably have to play Govt because everyone else is a newbie! The Coalition is probably the only one harder to play, since COIN control is much easier to get than support for the ADP Govt.

Well I did manage to get the game of Cuba Libre and people seemed to enjoy it even though it wasn't a hit with everyone (to be fair, they weren't committed wargamers). It was pretty close: I, as the government, managed to gain an early lead, but a couple of nasty events cut me down and by the end I ran out of money because there was a syndicate capability that prevented me from skimming (very annoying). The 26 July kept quiet until after the 3rd propaganda card, upon which they got loads of opposition thanks to the Pact of Caracas (it prevents the DR from removing opposition unless they get rid of two bases). The DR was one away from victory as well but struggled all game (it seems like a difficult faction to play). The syndicate kept quiet until the last propaganda, upon which it was on the brink of victory: we almost managed to cut down the lead by closing its casinos but then an event opened them back up again: we really should have aimed to destroy their money income instead or done something earlier. The game went down to the very last card.

Reactions were mixed: the winner said that he thought that he could see the appeal but the game really wasn't for him, the 16 Jul seemed to like it and the DR player (one of the guys in my 18XX group) said he would want to try it again. Hopefully I can get ADP on the table soon as well.

I was at a charity event at my FLGS over the weekend and they had a ton of games up for raffle and for auction, including a hole host of the old Avalon Hill games, so needless to say I spent far too much money, in that I destroyed by budget for the week, but hell if I didn't get a bang for my buck. So at auction I won a copy of Andean Abyss for 20 dollars, that and Twilight Struggle which I won (and already owned) in a raffle were the only modern games I won. The classic games I got were Jutland, The Guns of August, Rise and Decline of the Third Reich, MBT, World War 3 (from SPI) and Attack Sub. I lost out The Fall of France 1940 to some Brony rear end in a top hat. Hell I might give Attack Sub a chance since I've been told it was made for a younger audience so it might be less of a slog, though I do want to try out Jutland.

Seems like a good haul, especially with getting Andean Abyss for only 20 dollars, which is pretty much giving it away. Let us know how they are if you get the chance to try them.

I've been mildly interested in Attack Sub for a while because it's similar to Up Front. Definitely post your thoughts when you try it.

Yeah I was the only person that put a bid on fire it and the game 1830 so I got off rather well on that front. It was just me and a few of the older guys that bid on the old Avalon Hill games, except when they did an open auction when the ones on the silent auction didn't go, that's how I lost out to some jerkass Brony.

But I will try and let you guys know how some of them are, I'm learning AA first and want to try and rope in some of the other guys to play, than pick up Cuba Libre.

Komradex, I'll play MBT with you on Vassal if I can get the rules down.

Anyway, a friend and I have been playing Arab Israeli Wars and it's definitely a loving great game. Tracked down some "programmed instructions" from an issue of the General that tells you which scenarios and rules to do first and it's gone very smoothly. At first Israelis seemed to always win, but once we introduced all the standard rules (there are still advanced and optional oh god) the balance definitely came into play and my Israeli shermans got wrecked. It's like company-ish level (each tank unit is 5 tanks or a half company, i think infantry are companies? i forget) and it's really cool. It's hex and counter but you have line of sight and you fire onto distant hexes based on range, terrain, sighting, etc. There's also a Weapon Effects Chart that changes up the CRT, not to mention hull down rules and stuff that change up the die roll. It's just a really great look at tank and infantry desert warfare and we're having a hell of a time playing it. The scenario structure means games don't last as long because you're not playing a division or corps-level campaign. Basically I highly recommend it if you're someone that is somewhat learned with wargames already. I'd say it's my 4th or 5th wargame and I started on Stalingrad not over a year ago.

PS Tekopo I am totally new to all of this Vassal stuff but I want to get in on a game. When would this be possible and what rules would I have to read?

I should be able to get my internet back today, but using Vassal is pretty easy and usually dependent on the module in question (some modules are much better than others in terms of functionality. Vassal is just like a real life game board and some of the better implementations automate some of the functions. I'm not going to be around this weekend but next weekend might be possible for some online gaming.

You can look at the Grognard Games thread in the main games forum for reactions, but the initial reports are that it has no AI and non functional multiplayer, making it basically a $100 VASSAL module. Very disappointing if Matrix screws up the potential for more computerized versions of board wargames

There's a slight but definite chance I may get a face-to-face game of Maria going this weekend! I've never played before, and have been reading through the rules.

Is this a game that I should plunge into the advanced game and skip the tutorial mode; or is it one of those things where the advanced game just adds on poo poo I don't need?

The advanced game of Maria is pretty much the game. The tutorial is just basic 'how to move pieces around'. Without the 3-player elements Maria loses most of what makes it good, imo.
