Everquest killed my libido (and my cat). 8(
I played about 10 hours or so of the original and bought Dark Arisen and got sidetracked and never played it. I am going to jump back into things but I want to start a new character since it's been so long that I don't remember poo poo.

Will I get the bonuses (unlimited Ferrystones, etc.) of owning Dragon's Dogma if I start a new game in Dark Arisen? Or do I need to start a new game in DD and then switch over to DA?

You can't just start a new game and get the perks, after you've already applied the perks to an imported save file.

The original Dragon's Dogma save file should still be there, so if you delete your current DD:DA save game (back it up to the cloud or something), next time you restart it should give you the first-run dialogue that notifies you about your benefits for having an original DD save file. You'll have to do this from the XBox dashboard or PS3 XBM. If you start a new game after all that, you'll have the perks once you finally can access your stash.

Restarting for Dark Arisen... and I can't remember which are the annoying Pawn classes to hire for.

What should I focus my primary pawn as? Fighter? Healer? Sorceror?

Post or die
That depends heavily on what what class you are going to be playing and what you'd like in your party. You can ignore healers entirely in favor of dps if you carry enough healing items around and like picking pawns off the floor.

If you want a punching bag for the monsters fighters and warriors are a good choice. Most of the problems with pawns comes from their AI which can be either brilliant or utterly idiotic (mostly this). Warrior pawns with the charge smash are a sad, sad sight and sorcs with long cast time meganukes will either get knocked out of their cast, killed before they get the spell off or start casting their meteors when the mobs are around 5% hp.

At least on your own pawn you can make sure their inclination isn't guardian/x!

I make my pawn to shore up any weaknesses the vocations I'm playing as have. So if I'm going primarily physical, I like to have a sorcerer for buffs and high magic damage, if I'm going magic, I like to make a Ranger or Fighter.

Figuring this is the way I'll go (I'm going Fighter/Mage Knight). IIRC, finding a Mage pawn that's equipped right to do proper healing AND enchanting was kind of a bitch, and you end up having to swap them based on the weaknesses of the region you're in, etc.

Remember that you probably should not upgrade Anodyne at all. It's a lot more difficult for pawns to cast due to its considerably longer casting time.

I'm having trouble finding non-default pawns, even if I go 10 or 20 levels above my MC (currently at lvl 10).

I did notice that my PSN connection is NAT type 2, if that makes a difference.

That shouldn't be the case. If you set it to online, you should see your friends pawns come out, then the menu selection on the stone to hire others.

Oh god yeah. I'm starting fresh again but my intention is to have my first pawn run as a fighter until I can get Sinew on there, then it's off to 'be the loving support mage nobody else knows how to properly train' land for the rest of its hollow existence.

Kinda wish I hadn't used Blast arrows + Conqueror's Periaps on Daimon. Made the fight a bit less epic than it should have been. Oh well, hopefully when I get to him next time he won't fall so easily.

I do really like the story stuff BBI adds, definitely has shades of Berserk (and so does the main plot, in some ways; thematically it's kinda like a softer Berserk).

So, just how important are individual stats in this game? Like, is the +4 magic bonus from a circlet significant in any way? I really wish games like these would be more transparent about their calculations, because like in Final Fantasy Tactics anything that gave you +4 in your magic stat would be enough to essentially double your damage output, but I have the suspicion that in this game it's meaningless and I should just go with something that looks cooler.

+4 is meaningless. Dress how you wanna.

whoa not really. You can clear the quarry real early (before you go to Gran Soren) and from there it's just a matter of affording it. It has nice stats for most of the game. And even if it didn't, see above.

The stats on armour are mostly a nicety since you can fairly easily outlevel everything. For comparison, a Mage between levels 1-100 gains +4 Magick Attack each level and +2 from 101-200 while a Soceror gains +5 and +3 respectively.

I'd say you should pick the prettiest dresses for your party first. I mostly stuck to circlets so I could see my characters faces. :shobon:

A +4 bonus to something like strength or magick is effectively meaningless.

As far as I can tell, the game is pretty much completely linear when it comes to how bonuses affect your stats. If you have 300 base strength and equip a weapon with 1000 attack, you'll now have 1300 strength. If something gives you a +5 bonus to strength on top of that, now you have 1305 strength, which is... not a huge leap, considering.

Does anyone know if Assassin's Ring/Band counts as a red item or a yellow item?

Harrow
Jun 30, 2012

Assassin gear is normally yellow, but according to the wiki, Assassin rings are red for some reason.

At this point I just purify every item as blue, red, and yellow before I settle on what I want it to be, because I don't entirely trust the wiki and I apparently have a fetish for reloading saves.

This is kind of true, but in the Dark Arisen content I noticed it doesn't work out so well. My pawns died a lot more until I decided to kit out my main guy in real armor and get better support pawns. My pawn died all of one time outside of Bitterblack Isle, and that's from my throwing him off a mountain over and over again to do the female bandit quest (the only times he went down but not out were to dragon enemies). Plus stat items are pretty worthless though, the best I've got is like +17 on a helmet versus the +1000 or so from a weapon.

Speaking of pawns dying though, is there any good reason to kill Death? I tend to just exit an area and come back when he shows up because he always ends up killing a pawn.

Death drops upgrade materials that you need for some top tier BBI items. Kill it once and hope you get both of them (scythe and lantern pieces) then just dupe them at the black cat.

Maybe you're not looking at the same wiki I am, but...

"Your reward and your getting the Gold Idol will depend on how well and fast you meet her whims in this mission. Bumping into her or picking her up will affect the outcome negatively."

"Speak with Symone after completing the quest. If you've pleased her enough she will give you the Gold Idol. If not, she will give you a Golden Egg. At worst, you'll receive an Empty Flask."

I'm talking about the page that lists the idols and what quests (can) give them out as prizes. I didn't click through to read the details because I didn't think I had to. Here is the one I mean:

http://dragonsdogma.wikia.com/wiki/Supplier%27s_Demand

quote:

The Gold Idol is received from an Escort Duty quest for Symone, which can be started by talking to Fournival after completing Land of Opportunity and Chasing Shadows.

"is received" makes it sound standard.

I spent so much time looking through my inventory for a loving flagon to combine with my flasks of water, and splashing around in the well looking for one, before just handing her a goddamn flask of water.

I leaped directly across the roofs of the slums and bolted directly to the gate because I wouldn't want to patronize the lovely kid in a foot race. Jesus Christ!

The golden idol is no big loss, the discount from a forged silver idol is close enough and the items Caxton would have sold you are expensive. You can find the good poo poo in BBI too for more excitement!

Bitterblack Isle, the DLC content added by DA. You get to it by going to the Cassardis Docks at night. You can easily just run past all the monsters and loot chests for a chance at great gear.

BitterBlack Isle, which has way better gear than anything in standard Dragon's Dogma, that is assuming you're playing Dark Arisen. And seriously don't sweat it too much, you can get a silver idol that will get you pretty good stuff and you should find at least one bronze idol to give to the other of the two you have to pick for the quest.

And don't sweat the discount too much, you'll be fine. If you forge the Silver (or any) Idol, you can still turn in the quest from Caxton or Madeline, and keep on getting the discount. Just remember, don't turn in the forgery turn in the real one, while it does complete the quest you won't get any new shop items for doing it.

And just in case you do eventually go into new game plus, you should know that the kid doesn't give you the reward at the end of the quest, you have to go back to her house a bit later (a day, maybe more) and talk to her. Even if you screwed up all the nit-picky poo poo that that quest requires she should still give you something, even if it's just the empty flask from the water.

It is really dumb, but I've gotten alarmingly good at doing that stupid quest now.

Nope, you can talk to her immediately after completing the quest and get the idol. Also IIRC you can make sure you get the idol by maxing out her Affinity before doing the quest. Though I've never bothered, since the quest is easy enough to do properly.
