But then I can tune back in when something exciting is happening. I watched The Ninth Gate last night on Amazon Prime. Besides the obvious story problems the thing that bothered me the most was that it's a movie about five hundred year old books and the books look like something they picked up at Borders the day before shooting. The paper, the binding, the printing, the page structure, everything about these books says that these are modern books not more than ten years old and the plot of movie is about authenticating that these are genuine 500 year old books. And the antique dealers and researchers handle them like college students with a library book. I just noticed that Netflix has added Caligula and the description makes it sound like it's the "uncut" version (though if Malcolm McDowell is to be believed that version is actually footage added by the producers). I've never seen it but it's definitely infamous...

Like I said in a previous post, I tend to be wary of anything "hard sci-fi," because more often than not the term tends to mean, "Internet Sperglord-approved sci-fi." Europa Report is more like Babylon 5, where stuff works in predictable and realistic ways but they don't really go into the technical details much. It's more a movie about the struggles that a long-term deep-space voyage might entail.

I do think the photography and score are both excellent, and I love the slow pace as well. It honestly has become more enjoyable for me the more times I watch it, and I've probably seen it 8 or 9 times now. The thing that I remember most about the movie though is the satchel/man purse/bag that Depp's character carries. I've looked far and wide for one just like it but have yet to find one like I want. It's apparently a 1935 French Army ammo bag and there are lots of replicas around but I can't find an original!

Europa Report was pretty good. I thought they overdid the camera reception/artifact noise at points, to the point where it started detracting from the drama of the moment, instead of adding to it. I also wouldn't recommend watching it if you're tired or like, dicking around on your phone or whatever, because I got confused by one of the (important) nonlinear scenes and probably didn't get the whole impact of it.

When I was in school and this film was in theaters, a Bible thumping fundamentalist classmate went to see this thinking it was some kind of lighthearted romantic comedy, which the title does evoke a little. She wound up walking out pretty early.

Another vote here for Europa Report - definitely worth watching. Kept me hooked all the way through. Yeah, the security cam gimmick gets a tad cheesy in spots. Makes me want to rewatch Sunshine again too.

I have emerged from the far side of Caligula and I've got to say... I think it's a good movie. It left me kind of conflicted because it's so lurid and over-the-top that I feel like it actually detracts from the film. Then I thought for a while and realized if it wasn't so crazy then it wouldn't be Caligula, it would just be a forgotten seventies costume drama. As it is, this is a crazy spectacle of filmmaking; an attempt to redo the huge dramas of the late fifties and early sixties with more sex than you can imagine (well, you guys are the Internet so maybe not more but pretty close). It's got better performances than the film deserves, too. Just don't watch it with your kids.

I'm going to throw out a dissenting opinion on Europa Report. It's a well done film for its budget and without big flaws, but I just couldn't get into it for some reason. I really didn't care for any of the characters, and the reveal at the end was more of a 'well, that's it?' moment for me. It felt like a less exciting and lower budget version of The Abyss.

Skyfall is all over the place, I really disliked it when it came out but enough people I respect liked it that I started to doubt my judgement. Then we all watched it again and it's really just bad. The script feels like an early draft. Acting and cinematography are all top-notch but it's probably the weakest of the Craig films so far.

I just didn't like it because it felt like it was screaming that it wasn't my grandfather's James Bond over and over. We get it, no gadgets, no new cars, almost no guns. Take that away and it turns into a dour, boring yawnfest. Anyone else on Comcast having trouble with netflix? None of my equipment has changed, but starting around when they added the new season of walking dead, I almost never get to HD anymore and most stuff doesn't make it past the sub-SD level most of the time. I've pretty much stopped watching it and I'm thinking about cancelling because it's honestly not watchable. I get 50+mb/sec on various servers from speedtest, so there's no good reason I should be getting stuff that looks like a 240p vid on youtube.

I couldn't even get through QoS so I suppose it was worse, but I really disliked Skyfall. The beginning and the end were OK, but the part in middle when they captured Silva was like an especially dumb episode of Spooks. When your headquarters has been compromised by a hacker what a great idea to move to a location with unexplored tunnels and computer-controlled locks and plug Silva's computer into their network, which was luckily all part of Silva's evil plan that could have been prevented by a $5 padlock.

I read somewhere that Skyfall was like a Bond film in reverse, starting out with a big set piece and then scaling down to a smaller fight at the end. Like a deconstruction of a Bond film back to it's base elements. Whatever reading you give the film, it just didn't entertain me. the villain was weak, and it suffered from the stupid cliches that I hate "Bad guy gets caught, but that was his plan!" and "COMPUTERS!"

I thought the actors were top notch in Skyfall, but it just was a real non entertaining mess. Didn't even seem like a Bond movie at all. Glad Finney got to be a badass, yet again. "Welcome to Scotland!"

I usually find Bond movies pretty boring (although I usually enjoy them somewhat), so the fact that this seemed less like a Bond movie was a plus. I agree that it was like an adult Home Alone movie, so...that was awesome. I also liked the villain. Just watch it already if you haven't.

I'd suggest people give Skyfall a try, at least; it's got top-notch production values, all the actors put in great work, the intro sequence/song is superb, the editing is much better than in Quantum of Solace, etc. I think there's plenty to recommend about it.

I just wanted to thank this thread for mentioning Monsters is on Netflix. Been meaning to check it out for a while. Even more impressive that they did it on an almost literal shoestring budget with gear bought off shelf.
