$10 a month, $199 replacement. Apple care is an upfront $99, $80 replacement. Apple Care doesn't cover lost or stolen. Unless apple makes an exception you no longer qualify for apple care.

It's always hard to say there is one better than the other. The main things that come to mind are insurance is $199 deductible and covers loss. Apple Care + is $80 (could be wrong) and doesn't cover loss.

They're coming down pretty hard on goals and commission. I'll message you info so you can know how lucky you were to not be around for the transition.

And the COU is just one of those kings for me. I used to use it a lot more, but the new unsaid policy is if you go over the soft 5GB data cap they kill tethering on your phone. I lost mine months ago, so that's one less use of the phone for me (I have a personal plan with plenty of data at least).

Yeah I was there right when they started bitching about the 5 gig limit. I left shortly after but I never got hit myself. I also still had no purchase block. Not paying for apps and music was rad.

I went to go get a new iPhone 5s yesterday at a retail shop using my brother's upgrade (family plan). Of course, they didn't have any in stock. The rep told me that despite being on a family plan, in order to order an iPhone from AT&T, I would need to use my personal upgrade that isn't up in a year and that my only option in regards to using my brother's upgrade would be when the 5s came back in stock at an AT&T store. That sounded really fishy, is that actually how it works?

Technically you can't order a phone and do a cross upgrade with it so the upgrade could still be done but it would be done on your brothers line and you would have to change the phones manually. You could go to a corporate store and have them remove the parked equipment and then activate it to your line. Someone tell me if I'm wrong though.

FYI there is kind of a big unsaid issue with upgrades and ATT reps right now. As in, reps both don't get paid much, AND ATT has a big emphasis on Next, so if you are not doing Next the rep is both not getting money and it is hurting said reps Next sales percentage. The result sometimes is that reps will try to avoid upgrades with lines like "check back later," "order online," or "check Apple inventory." I try to avoid doing it and just take the sales ranking hit like a big boy, but it honestly is very tempting for people. That is likely why you got the initial response you got, as ATT reps can easily order iPhones and anything that isn't gold ships pretty quickly.

Basically, a result of the complaints from a page back when we were talking about ATT's focus on growth.

The "brothers" line new SIM can be deleted from the cart during the DF process to avoid it being activated and cutting off his line.

One thing ATT is pretty good on in my experience is fixing legit billing errors. It looks like you may have one, so monitor it and call in to have them fix it. COR stores can also fix it, but I think care would be less of a hassle in this case.

More than likely it was not done intentionally. I would call customer care to verify that both phones are on one 6gb plan just to be on the safe side. If they're not then they'll be able to take care of it right there for you.

Thought of something that if possible might enable me to stay with AT&T...

I am currently under contract for a minute-based family plan with unlimited texting. It has two smartphones (each with a data package) and a dumbphone (no data).

Would I be able to convert this to a shared data family plan and switch the dumb phone line to a tablet line without extending my contract?

Is is physically doable? Yes.

Some reps might not do it since they released new rules saying that lines cant convert device types. AKA phone to tablet, or tablet to mifi.

I would do it no problem and care offers it as a retention offer. Mileage could vary but it shouldn't be hard.

My interpretation of the rule is you need to make sure the right ETF is on the line. If I have someone who has no upgrades but wants to add a line to get the discount, the correct process is add said iPhone on that line so it ties the correct ETF, then change the iPhone to their line and change that line to a tablet. I see it as no different than a cross upgrade from a dumb phone or an add a line on the older nation plans, both of which are still completely kosher. It's one scenario I go over every minute detail on for sure though.

That's a shame and very interesting. Now that you mention it, I remember hearing many of the reps push Next VERY hard onto people and onto myself as well. I know that Next is a big rear end ripoff (sorry AT&T guys, but the 2 year contract poo poo is bad enough!) but to the older, more easily impressionable people who walked in, they definitely went into full sales mode and kind of really dug deep to get people to commit to it.

I don't like going to the AT&T store around here; it's not that the service is bad, but you can tell the employees don't like their job at all and the atmosphere just isn't very accommodating as a result. But with where that store is in my city, and how seemingly AT&T deals with their employees' sales numbers, I don't blame them for coming off the way they do.

I'm very highly ranked for the year, and was told by the area manager that I shouldn't expect a promotion because I haven't sold digital life lately (not from lack of trying). Thankfully other areas view things slightly differently, but yeah, the focus on specific metrics is crazy.

There Def are ways to at least somewhat balance between the BS and still taking care of people, but it's harder. I would have laughed as little as 6 months ago if you would have told me it's in my interest not to encourage certain customers not to buy phones from me. Disgraceful.

And to set the numbers very straight forward with Next: the policy is complicated but it's actually quite simple when you do the math. Doing Next and trading in the phone every 12 months is an extra $17 a month to get a yearly upgrade over a 2 year upgrade. There are people who every 12 months do the yearly $450 early upgrade for the new iPhone, and for them Next is basically that cost spread over the bill. But you don't keep the phone when you get the new one. So overall very few people do benefit from Next, and in the case that they do, it's mostly just spreading the cost over time as opposed to up front. But Next is at the least an extra $17 monthly.

I will bet that AT&T will phase out early upgrade options over the next year to encourage people to go with Next.

What do you think is the best option?
Some suggest everyone buying at full retail with no contracts. This seems to work in other markets, but as you know, North America is typically an anomaly with regards to how people spend money and their value expectations. A quarter, at best, of the US buy phones without subsidies. It's the standard now, good or bad, but at least AT&T is making moves to steer away from 2 year contracts. This time last year, there was no other option on any carrier.

I think we are talking about two different things. What you are saying there is a full upgrade, which indeed you can't do a full upgrade for 24 months. What I am talking about it an early upgrade, where the iPhone 5S is $450 instead of $200 as an example.

Oh yeah. That's there. Ill be surprised if that goes away. Getting people in 2 years without a full discount? Seems like a money maker to me. I'm not bothered enough to break down the math, but its got to be close to what NEXT is with regards to total out of pocket cost.
