Alera was written when Dresden was half it's current length. Butcher says it's simply takes longer to write Harry because of all the added history.

I guess I haven't been paying attention, but there's a LOT of character twitter/tumblr accounts that seem really active (@harriedwizard for Dresden and if you click "following" you see some of the other ones). Anyone know if any of them are even semi-official?

In Turn Coat, Molly makes an offhand comment about "I should be invincible for another year or two." This is three books/years later, her mortal existence is ended. Probably coincidence, but maybe not. It'd be funny if it was intentional foreshadowing hidden in a conversation about doughnuts and youthful metabolism.

It's Bob. In this case, multitasking would mean watching multiple pornos at once, like when we first saw him in Cold Days.

I'm at Turn Coat now and starting to feel bored. I think it is because of how almost every book is pretty much the same. It would be nice to see Harry make it through without getting beat to poo poo. Ten books in a row where he is near death isn't very effective. Now if a few books went by where he still dealt with poo poo but didn't almost die and suffer grievous wounds and then he got a big one, that would have worked better. I think I would have enjoyed these much more if there was a year between each reading. Doing them back to back really shows how formulaic the writing has become. There is still enough in them that I enjoy that I keep going, though.

To be fair, the protagonist having his poo poo kicked in is pretty much a staple of the noir genre.

Khizan posted:The svartelves can make wizard proof lightbulbs, I suppose they could have a functional computer in Molly's place? Outside of IT'S MAGIC! (or dwarven craftsmanship), it's quite possible there could be an overengineered solution to the problem. If I was a wizard in the Dresdenverse, I'd have a computer inside a shielded (warded? ) room far away from my main living areas and use a projector as a display. A regular old school keyboard and ball mouse shouldn't short that easily when exposed to wizards considering they are pretty much as analog as telephones, which are shown to work fine for the magically talented. If they don't work, then, have a setup where you press the keyboard with goddamn sticks or something, what am I, a wizard?

I'd honestly be surprised if Luccio didn't come up with something like that by the end of the series. Remember, she does consider herself a computer hobbyist (from a safe distance).

I did a massive marathon re-read right before Changes came out, and I felt the same way. It really feels episodic and the first few episodes are feel like they're hitting the same beats. I've always been a really fast reader, but ripping through a Dresden book per day really killed some of my enjoyment. Thankfully, everyone that's been saying Changes really does change everything up is spot on in the best possible way. And now when I decide to do Dresden re-reads, I'll knock out the first 3 books as fast as I can, but when I get past that I make a conscious effort to slow down and pace myself. It helps a lot.

I wouldn't trust an Amazon date until they actually open it up for preorders. Even then, I wouldn't trust an Amazon date until Jim and/or his publisher makes an official announcement.

At one point (I think turn coat?) doesn't Harry mention that a Faraday cage grounds magical energies completely? He could set up the laptop and projector in a Faraday cage to keep it from shorting out and then just use the clockwork keyboard.

The Faraday cage reference is in Turn Coat, and it's more of an analogy. He has a set of magical wards that would act like a Faraday cage to short out any magic directed at his safe house.
